Ken Giles finished up his month with his seventh save, allowing 1R on 1H, 1BB and 1K. He ended the month striking out 25 of the 50 men he faced. Math tells us that’s a pretty good rate of…uh…carry the two…err…Fifty Percent?!?!?! That can’t be right. In all seriousness, the fact that he only walked four of those 50 is almost as impressive, and even more encouraging than the Ks, which we all assumed he’d be able to produce at a high level.
Cameron Perkins continues to hit – I feel like I say that every couple days. He had two doubles last night, and 11 for the month of April, and averaged an XBH every 7PAs or so. Impressive. I’ll guess he’s in line for a promotion to AAA by mid-June at the latest if he doesn’t fall off a cliff, or get swept away by a flood, as it were.
And poor Anthony Hewitt – guy had a really bad April, capped off by ye olde golden sombrero last night. He struck out 22 times in 17 games in the month (48PAs), for a Giles-esque 46% K Rate. Props to Hewitt for how hard he must have worked, and how hard we’ve heard he works, to improve over the years just to make it to AA, but I have a feeling we’re witnessing the end of his Phillies career right now.

I expected a bit more strikes from Severino, but he’s still able to get through 7 solid with only 92 pitches.

How many games has Cesar played at SS since he was sent down?

4 at SS, 11 at 3B, 1 at 2B. Made an error in the first game and I think they backed off a bit. They probably see him on the team at the same time as Galvis this year anyway and do not think of him as the SS backup unfortunately.
LikeLike
Galvis clearly manages to stick because of his ability to play short but Cesar clearly has the better hit and OBP tools. I don’t think they will be on the team at the same time. If the bat doesn’t come around soon for Freddy I think he finds himself in Lehigh.
Some moves should be forth coming when Ruf is ready to come off the DL. That either means something for Mayberry or Nix.

He was at SS last night, only saw one ball towards him in the bit of the game I caught, he missed it as it went into LF for a single. The instincts (which could improve) and the arm (which won’t improve) just aren’t there for the left side of the infield

What were the scouting reports on him in CF last year? If he can play good defense at those positions and hit .280+ in the bigs as a switch hitter, that’s a solid backup, correct?

I meant CF and 2B

I am guessing we can infer the scouting reports on him in CF from the fact that he is no longer playing CF, at all, even in the minors.

I’m still interested in Biddle, Franco, Dugan (at least I was when he was healthy), Joseph (whenever he returns to play), Sev Gonzales, Altherr, Tocci, Cozens, Jan Hernandez (although he probably will be returned to XST)

Interested vs excited…just depressed about Phils top to bottom…i like Biddle (was his mailman actually…lol), Dugan and Franco…but their numbers arent there …yet…hopefully

It’s early for Altherr and Dugan was putting up good numbers before the DL. That Reading OF still has potential to be a lot of fun this summer. Also Biddle had a couple of dominating starts and Severino not looking so bad either.

Hopefully Perkins keeps up the contact and earns himself a promotion sometime mid-June into early July.
I want to see how he handles the more seasoned and veteran pitchers at AAA.

Anyone know anything about Perkins defense? Loving things from the offensive side, but never hear anyone talk about his defense.
Also, which prospects in XST should we be excited about?

My general recollection of various reports is that he is passable in the OF, the arm is not excellent but not lousy in RF, and we know he’d need to hit for more power to make long-term sense in LF.
My take on him in general is he may beat Kelly Dugan to the bigs, but Dugan has a better chance to be the solution long-term because he has a bit more power potential. Of course, you could always move one of them if they both come up as regulars in RF, or possibly platoon them for a while and see how it shakes out. I haven’t looked at their historical splits to see if that makes much sense.

To your other question, aside from injured guys playing back into shape in XST, I would say to be most excited about Luis Encarnacion, Jose Pujols, Cord Sandberg, Malquin Canelo and Jake Sweaney, plus Deivi Grullon and Jan Hernandez, who have already been moved out to full-season leagues as injury subs, but who might wind up back in WPT in June. A sleeper – Pitcher Manny Chavez. He tore up the VSL last year, though as a 19-year-old.

Its not great but he’s really still learning since he was a corner infielder in college. In spring training, I saw him make a long run for a fly ball and then awkwardly drop it. His arm seems to be fine and he has enough speed to play OF but he’ll never be smooth out there.

Hunter Pencian in the OF?

That’s probably a pretty good comp although Pence makes some of the ugliest OF plays I’ve ever seen.

I’m not ready to bail on Biddle yet (it was one bad start after two ridiculously good ones). If the R-Phils website is correct, he pitches Saturday and on the one day I have tickets for. Hope he makes it worth the trip (and that he pitches).

Its was a very good bounce back game for Severino. One guy we never talk about is Stassi who is now hitting over 300. I believe he hit pretty well last year too. Unfortunately, with zero power, he has no major league future.
I agree with the earlier comments on Cesar, his arm will never work as a starting player on the left side. However, the question is whether he can improve enough to be a utility guy because we know his bat and legs could help the team right now more than Nix. Galvis isn’t going anywhere because his glove is better than anyone else’s and he plays all three spots well.
LikeLike
So you can afford an .033 bench player if his glove is good? Yeah, I guess you could always have the pitcher bat for himself which would probably give you a better chance of getting some one on base or moved over. After all most of the pitchers can bunt.

We’ve seen Galvis for 3 years now. He’ll never hit a ton but he won’t hit 033 all year. And yes, I want my infield back up to be very strong defensively. It doesn’t mean that he’ll get many starts though.

Could the after-effects of MRSA be affecting his performance? Hand-eye coordination.

Is this the year they finally give up on Anthony Hewitt? Wow he has been terrible to start this season. He is repeating double A, which is a huge hitters park and he only has 6 hits in 48 AB’s No doubles, No triple’s, No home runs, No walks, and 22 strikeouts. Might be the worst month of hitting i have ever seen following Phillies prospects.

I respect Anthony Hewitt for all the effort he’s put in to become an effective baseball player (it wasn’t his fault he was drafted where he was). That said, the year to finally give up on Anthony Hewitt as a true prospect is 2011.

Maikel Franco is a classic power hitter – he’s going to be fine, although how long it takes him to achieve his potential is subject to debate. The issue with him is whether he can stay at third long or medium term. He has the kind of bat speed that you can’t teach – the ball explodes off his bat.

Yes agree.
I hope, come mid-summer, he has to force Ruben to make a decision whether or not to bring him up.

Yes he is, 3 three hit games in last ten and OPSing over .860. Crawford is OPSing over .1000 in his last 10 games.

Crawford is a tremendous prospect – probably the best in the organization since Cole Hamels, although Dom Brown circa 2010 might quarrel with that assessment.

Obviously the numbers don’t tell us all we need to know about what his coaches have him working on and where he is in that process – but unless there is a serious disconnect between that and the numbers, and assuming he keeps playing well, I would think a mid season call up to Clearwater is just a matter of time. The question is when. I would guess June – though whether early or late I will not predict.
Quinn may be the biggest obstacle, though. One would assume that, when ready, he would be the SS at Clearwater. That would obviously create a log jam at the position. One of them could DH – it’s not like a real prospect would have to sit – but I would think they would want both of them to get max reps at shortstop.

I don’t know. I think they may just leave him down in Lakewood all season. Just let him be comfortable. He’ll still be young for clearwater if he waits till next year.

I think that’s probably pretty close to being right – I see a very late season promotion this year so he gets a taste of high A ball. I think this is the year they want him to work on all kinds of things, only one of which is hitting. Next year, I think they could move him much more quickly, much as Franco and Dugan did last year. I expect Galvis to man SS in the beginning of 2016 with Crawford at AAA, perfecting his skills and looking to be called up in the early/middle portion of the year. I’d love to see Crawford put on another 15 pounds of muscle over the next few years.

Prospects as good as he is tend to move more quickly than that. And the Phillies, previously a little conservative on advancing their prospects (though to a much lesser extent than critics alleged), have become more aggressive.
“Young for Clearwater” is a relative term. For a top prospect, he will not be young for Clearwater next season. Assuming continued progress, you absolutely want to see him spend the second half of 2015 in Reading. And giving him a taste of A+ this season (possibly less of a taste than I set forth above, but at least a month) will make that progression more likely.
To add some perspective to this, Rollins spent his entire age 19 season in A+, granted he was a couple of months older than Crawford. Is Crawford a comparable prospect to Rollins? IMO yes.

Catch, I think we agree on his 2015 and 2016 progression, and obviously disagree only a little regarding what happens this season. But I think that, if you really think he is going to progress that way in 2015 and 2016, an earlier promotion this season makes sense.
