Now that we have finished our collective list it is time for everyone to submit their own lists if they want to. I will post them all up here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aq9atTaYBdErdDFibUpEVENleTB0Mnk1X0dSb19DSWc#gid=1 so that they can be compared against each other. I will try to remember to bring this post back up mid-season so that we can see how we all are doing even if it will be impossible to judge for another 5-10 years.
Please post your Top 30 along with what ever name you want me to post it up as in its own post rather than reply to a previous one.

‘I couldn’t find a spot for Astudillo, although he is inriguing’….last night, (745PM posting) you had him on your list, why now the change? I personally like the fact he rarely swings and misses.

As I said last night, I needed a place for Lino. All the comments over the past weeks on Lino had me comparing his stats to others, so I squeezed him in. Astudillo would be my 31, as BA did, if I removed Watson and Gueller, who I don’t really have on my own listing.

Have we completely given up on him? I think he’s still got as good a shot at being MLB regular as most SS guys we’re “pullin” for. Good pedigree, just needs to put some things together. He’s probably worth more to another team than the Phillies, though.

I haven’t given up on him, but he’s around number 50 on my list. It would be fantastic if his good last month in Clearwater carried over to Reading.

On the two picks that would likely cause a dispute –
Rosenberg – I love this guy. He has a whale of an arm (is a 98 MPH good enough for you?) and I think he’s just coming into his own. He can also hold his velocity for several innings, which means he may turn back into a starter or swing man. He’s the one guy on the roster that could turn into Ryan Vogelsong (SF edition, not Lehigh Valley version). At worst, he’s a great power arm out of the bullpen.
Hyatt – how quickly we forget when a prospect is a little older. He struggled last year with command and pitch selection but the ability is still there. I saw him pitch and he has plenty of velocity (89-93) to turn into a good 4th or 5th starter and a killer change-up. He probably needs one more effective breaking pitch and he needs to improve his command and approach. Still, he’s got the kind of stuff that someone like Tyler Cloyd would love to have. A dark horse to re-emerge and get some meaningful starts for the big club if injuries strike. I feel pretty good about him sitting at #30.
One more thing. If you’ve been following the recent news it appears that Schwimer still has not formally dropped his appeal. Is he out of his freaking mind? Even if he’s right, the last thing that a major league team wants is a player who is constantly pressing borderline legal rights and union grievances as a means to keep a spot on a big league roster and/or obtain big league pay. If he suffered a career ending injury and had nothing left to lose, that would be one thing. But if he wants to pursue a big league career, he’s just going to look like a whiner and will be perceived the type of guy who is only out for himself. I am an attorney and don’t make these comment lightly, but he’s being advised very poorly and, as a guy who is on the bubble, the vindication of his legal rights may end up costing him his life’s dream. Again, is he out of his mind?
LikeLike
I think Schwimer is misguided, but I do not think he is out of his mind. He is a young confident guy, and he doesn’t know how to humble himself. He is a young guy, whose doesn’t see the big picture.
He wants is $75,000 dollars and he doesn’t want to allow himself to be bullied out of that money. He is also confident in his abilities, so he probably feels that even if the Phillies cut him, or keeps him in the minors for another year, he will eventually make it with another team. He doesn’t see himself as a ‘fringe talent’, who should be happy to get a chance. He thinks he is good, and he will be able to overcome this with his talent.
LikeLike
Well, I think “misguided” is a charitable way to put it. By the way, unlike the lunatic fringe on this site, I don’t hate Schwimer or think he is a bad guy. To the contrary, I generally like him and think he’s a very bright and capable fellow. One way or another, he will be a successful person in life.
But handling the situation in the way he has, is, in my view, much more than a misguided mistake. He is on the fringe and he is not being advised properly. My sense is that, if he keeps with the appeal, he’s not going to get the type of fair shot he would otherwise receive unless he performs well enough to lift himself off the bubble. Nobody in baseball wants what they perceive to be a whining, pain in the ass, borderline middle reliever and that’s exactly how he’ll be viewed. I expect the Phillies will keep him this year and will intentionally force him to play the entire season in the minors unless he is an important trade chip. It will cost him more than $75k – I guarantee you that. Pretty foolish if you ask me.
LikeLike
Let’s face it. We care about him because he shared his dream with us. He is also quite bright. Let him pursue it the way he wants. It will be a lesson learned.

I don’t think it’s crazy at all to put Hewitt there … he’s got some of the best power in the system (when he makes contact).
Why so low on Franco? You’ve got him outside the top ten (and behind a relief prospect!). Not buying the second half last season?
LikeLike
I agree it isn’t too crazy to have Hewitt on a list (I wouldn’t but he did make my list of guys I think are still “prospects”). IF he can make enough contact to have the power show, IF he continues to make small improvements, IF he can be passable in all three OF positions, he can be a 4th OF. He is behind James in that aspect but both of them still could make the big leagues in a bench role.

I so wanted to put Jiwan James at #30 but just could not do it.
Also had May at 13, Bonilla at 15 (still should be a starter), and Diekman at 23.
