Box Score Recap 9-6-2012

Just the Reading playoff game, which all fell apart on Colby Shreve in the top of the ninth.  Trevor May and Kyle Simon took care of business for 8 innings. Reading scored its one run in the first on a single by Darin Ruf and an error in the outfield that allowed Tyson Gillies to score.

    1. +1

His last couple of outings give credince to the speculation that he was working on specific things throughout the year. In my eyes his is maybe a hair lower in his ranking as a prospect, but he will fall in my top 10 due to being jumped by other guys whose stock have risen. If he has another solid/great outing in the playoffs he might stay in the top 3, as he is performing at a time when he is probably not working on using certain pitches outside of his comfort level.

      1. I was listening to the game last night and the announcer spoke about Joe Jordan’s comments on May’s season and he quoted Jordan saying “Mission accomplished for May”

    1. Would love to hear reports on Simon. His K rate since joining the Phils has really ticked up. Does he have an out pitch?

He’s moving up pretty quickly and performing well at all stops.

    2. I was listening to the game also and don’t understand why Justin Friend did not pitch the 9th unless he was not available.

      1. Yeah, not sure why either. On the road, there’s a logic behind it, however weak that logic is when you examine it, but at home, it’s the most important inning, and your closer’s not going to get a (meaningless) “save” no matter what at that point, and you should want your best there to hold the tie so your hitters can win it with 1 run.

    3. Was at the game and Simon is really impressive. They hit a lot of weak ground balls off him. May looked good hitting 94 often on the gun. Ruf hit every ball hard except last at bat which was a fly ball although that was two pitches after he had hit a foul ball which travelled at least 400 feet but was 20 feet foul. Asche had a nice game fielding and hitting but was a little to aggressive on the base paths getting thrown out at third in the first inning which sort of killed their momentum. Ruf did misjudge a hard hit ball that was right at him and went over his head for a double, not sure he could have caught it anyway. Castro missed catching the triple by inches.

    1. I suspect the list will be updated soon with more effort.
If you look at the Phil’s specific list, it is very clear the lack of effort.

For Example, They did add Asche at #18, but they noted that they are not sure if he can stay at 3B but has played there in 2011 and 2012. Well, He was at 2B in 2011 not 2012.

It’s clear that the list was mostly just making adjustments of dropping out those who became ineligible, sliding others up, and perhaps slipping up a few movers and shakers but not even bothering to see what positions they lay much less serious analysis.

      1. that list is bizarre. for instance Joseph ranks higher among phillies prospects than Valle but among catching prospects Valle is one higher than Joseph

        1. I theorized it could be that they still give Joseph less of a chance as sticking as a catcher long-term, and see him winding up at first. But I suspect it’s just they threw it together like mw says above.

        2. I believe they quickly did the ‘team’ segment first and will get the ‘position’ segment at some later time.

          1. That’s scary if they actually thought about the team ones…having Asche at 18 and Franco at 19 is a joke.

  1. While I am please with the end results, it did take May 92 pitches to get through 5.1 and only 55 strikes. Def. steps in the right direction but would like to see him more economical and more strikes. Anyone at the game with a first hand report?

    1. I wasn’t there but I was listening to it and he was cruising the first few innings blowing people away with his fastball and it sounded like he had a good changeup too

  2. Surprised Biddle is only 82.
Only 1 in the Top 100 isnt surprising though. You have several guys right on the doorstep like Quinn, Larry Greene Jr, and especially Franco that all could be top 100 this time next year.

    Like

    1. I think Franco’s not only Top 100, but potentially in the top half of that list by the end of next year. He’s got talent, projection and momentum. Quinn could be there with a really big year in Lakewood.

  3. cholly comeon, larry greene isn’t top 100. cant agree and bet most think the same. quinn is close with another good season at higher level.

    Like

    1. Agree with you. Larry Greene needs to show a lot more and at higher levels. Quinn is at least a year away for this kind of consideration. Speed is such a great thing but when the pitching gets better, he still has to get on base. We’re still waiting for Jiwan James to figure out how to steal 1st base.

    2. While I don’t think it will happen, he’s right that he could be there next year. If the power shows up and the average and BB% stays up at a higher level, he’ll get serious consideration. No one in all of baseball denies he’s got monster power, but if he has an above average hit tool and plate discipline, he’s suddenly an elite prospect. Especially if he sticks in the OF.

That being said, I expect the power to flash next year, but I also expect a downtick in his peripherals and he stays well outside the top 100.

      Like

    3. Yes, Greene did not have an especially impressive season. He is basically a very strong power-tool guy, whose power hasn’t shown up yet. If you hadn’t read the scouting reports about the super raw power potential, you’d just say really nice walk rate, but other than that meh results. At this point in his career he is not close to top 100 or top 200 in baseball.

  4. To be on those top 100 lists, you really have to be an elite prospect or high draft pick. Biddle is good, but if he threw 95, he would be in the top half.

  5. Who do you guys think is gonna be in the Lakewood starting rotation next year?
    1. Shane Watson
    2. Mitch Gueller
    3. Josh Warner
    4. Manuare Martinez?
    5. ?

  6. Interesting blurb from Jayson Stark regarding Ruf:
And they are expected to call up the man who led the minor leagues in homers, converted first baseman Darin Ruf, for a late-season look in left field.

Ruf just turned 26, had never shown up on any top-prospects radar screens and had never hit 20 homers before this season. But he mashed 38 in Double-A and inspired one scout to say: “He might be Matt Holliday. … I saw him eight or nine games. And I saw him hit everything. I saw him take a 97 mile-an-hour heater from Zack Wheeler off the wall for a double. I saw him hit a changeup for a home run. I saw him barrel up junkballers, guys who throw hard and everything in between. And defensively, I actually thought he was better in the outfield than he was at first base. He’s an interesting guy.”

    1. That scout, coincidentally, is the guy who signed Darin Ruf. 🙂

Seriously, that’s a really encouraging thing to read. I’d absolutely love the guy to beat the odds and become a slugging LF in the Pete Incaviglia mold.

      1. Good God, he has to be better in LF than Inky, right?

I loved Inky’s HR’s, but I remember more strongly hoping nothing more than a pop up hit too him. He scared me in LF

        Like

        1. Ruf scares me in LF, too. There’s a reason nobody really bothered trying him there until he started hitting HRs like it was 1998. From all reports, he’s slower than the line at the DMV on Friday afternoon. Interestingly, Inky played more than 1,000 games as an OF in his career — including 37 in CF. Would have loved to see that …

Is Holliday a good comp physically? I’ve never paid attention to his wheels, but he has to be far more athletic than Ruf, no?

  7. Great news on the Ruf comments! If the guy can hit, he will at least have value to an American League team. Good to see May and Simon pitch well. I am kinda rooting against Reading; To see Ruf.

  8. There are only about 25 games left in the Phillies season. If Reading continues to win, how many games are we actually going to see Ruf play this year at the major league level

    Like

    1. I suspect that we will not see Ruf starting many games. He will probably start as many games in left as Brown has in center. He might get to play first base once or twice against a tough lefty. Otherwise, he is a bat off the bench.

  9. makes absolutely no sense not play him. do we need more looks out of mayberry or pierre??? imo ruf should play every game to see if he can handle left. we know what mayberry can do and pierre, we need to see ruf and brown . imo

  10. Ruf intentionally walked after a one-out Asche double.

Ruf picked off at first, and Hulett strikes out.

For those who may be watching this game, did I read this right?

    1. Yea I was there…Ruf got caught sleeping, lefty pitcher nailed him with a quick step off. Killed the momentum. Was mad about the IBB was hoping to see him hit again.

    1. It really feels like a great deal for us. I don’t care that they lost the last two games but I love that May and Martin both pitched well and that Asche continues to hit well (although his error hurt bad).

      Like

  11. I was at the game. Martin was great. He was blowing guys away, freezing guys, getting guys to chase. Seems like he knows how to pitch and got better as the game went on. Asche had a big error in the 8th that cost him. The only thing I don’t like about Martin is how he raises his hands over his head in the windup. I know it works for some guys but not a fan.

I watched Kninge throw in the bullpen. I wanted to be impressed but was not. I know it is only the bullpen but his fastball looked very straight. No movement at all. I was on an angle but still pretty close.

Loved Loved LOVED Asche’s swing. He is the real deal. Love his hands and quick little swing. He really drives the ball. Love it.

…and as we know….Gillies can flat out FLY. Has a cannon too. Played a nice centerfield. Tommy Jospeh looked just okay to me at the plate. (caught well, blocked some balls in the dirt nicely)

    1. I was there as well…I know absolutely nothing about scouting so I wont try. Ill just mentioned a few things that stood out to me (a casual fan). We actually noticed a lot of the same things. Martin was phenominal and definitely got better as the game went on. The extra runs in the 8th were due to an Asche error. Martin really didn’t get hit all night outside of some timely singles and a hard grounder down the line for a double in the first. Man this guy missed a lot of bats, a lot of first pitch strikes, and he made a few guys look flat out foolish swinging at his breaking stuff.

Asche is my new favorite prospect…cant say enough good things about the guy. Yes the error was bad but he looked fine on all the other plays he made. His 3 hits were all rocket line drives two to left center gap for doubles, one dropped in front of RF. but honestly the play that I liked the most doesn’t show up in boxscores…he was on second with 2 outs, there was a weak grounder to 2B, easy routine play, guy was clearly out…while this was all occurring Asche sprinted as fast as he could from second to home didnt slow down at all. I loved this, the effort reminded me of Utley. Just something that shows the guy’s make-up that many of us miss out on through the boxscores.

Tommy Joseph impressed me as well, he definitely looks the part. Has a strong arm. And really was the only other player that drove the ball all night. His double was dead centerfield and went over the fielder’s head. Fence is 407 possibly may have been out at smaller park but i didnt have a good angle, he smashed it though. He is NOT fast, he failed to advance to third on a slow roller between P and 1B that anyone with decent speed could have made. But, hes a catcher its expected.

Knigge did not impress me at all. You could just notice the difference in talent between him and Martin as soon as he started.

Gillies also looks the part, strong and fast. He made decent contact on a few ABs but hit right at guys. He scored from first on Asche’s double and wow did he fly. He also covers a ton of ground in CF, he made a fantastic sliding grab that he ran a long way for…and almost reeled in two more that were even shallower. Oh yea he also threw a rope to 3B and almost got the runner, It was impressive.

Honestly, Ruf was kind of invisible tonight. Got intentionally walked, struck out, and connected on a couple but right at fielders. He definitely is a patient hitter with a good eye. He also made a few nice plays in the field, I wish I would have seen him play LF though. Got picked off as was mentioned. Honestly, I was surprised by him, he is a big guy but really doesn’t have a whole lot of muscle tone in his arms or legs. I guess I was expecting a bigger guy after reading about all the HRs all summer.

Those are really the only guys I paid attention to. Hope you enjoyed my observations as rambling and incoherent as they were. Wish I could give more insight but I just really dont know the intrcacies of baseball.

  12. Was at the game and was very impressed by Martin. Hard to believe he had control problems most of the year, because tonight he was dealing. Of the 7 hits he allowed only 2 were actually hard hit(1st inning opposite field double and the 8th inning leadoff single) and he had 19 swing and misses.I posted 2 videos of Martin and 1 of .Joseph and Asche at You-Tube on TheGKita channel. Asche hit 2 ringing doubles one off a lefty and looked good at the plate all night.
