Clearwater win puts them into a three-way first place tie. Cameron Rupp with 4 hits and 4 RBI. Lehigh Valley loses but stays alive – their “unmagic” number is 1. Reading falls, and Brody Colvin’s line looks very bad again.
Maikel Franco ends with a .989 OPS for the month of August. And his K rate for the year looks like it will come in under 15%. Truly impressive for a guy who just turned 20. Would like to see him walk more, but I’ll take 7+% with as much power as he’s shown.
And on the “things looking up from the bottom of the abyss” front – Tyler Greene finished August with a K Rate under 30%, a BB rate above 6%, and a .670 OPS. A sign of something good to come? Perhaps. A small sample? Undoubtedly.

Another Solid night for Cameron Rupp, you got to believe he has a chance to be the longest lasting of our catching prospects when it comes to having a big league career with maybe the exception of Lino if he can figure it out. Also why is Brody Colvin still in AA? Why isn’t Austin Wright taking his spot?

What is your criteria for projecting length of careers? I’m just curious why you think Rupp and Lino will last longer than Joseph and Valle.

i’m not sure what it means either, but I would get that Rupp has a celing of “solid Major League Backup” – a guy who catches 50-60 games per year and gives you serviceable offense and defense. He could parlay that into a nice long MLB career

Rupp right now projects as having the tools to have a lengthy career based off of him being a solid defensive backup catcher with a average to below average bat. Joesph, and Valle are just praised for their bat and that is always the biggest crapshoot when it comes to promoting a top prospect. Think for every Jeff Clement can’t miss catching prospect their has been a Brian Schneider who has put together a long Major League career just because he calls a good game, works well with pitchers, and is good defensively. Rupp is very similar, all I was saying is that he projects to have a longer major league career right now, by no means can anybody predict what will happen with Valle or Joesph, in my opinion at least one moves to another position because in 2-3 years our catchers will either be Ruiz/Rupp or Valle/Joesph/ and Ruiz/Rupp. And right now Lino has all of the intangibles to be the best of all of our current catching prospects but he is only 19 and we won’t know if he is a legit prospect for another year or two.

Colvin really stinking up the reading bench. Bullpen might be in his future. May, biddle, Morgan and wright. They have passed him. And Martin to be. Colby had a productive first year also. Pitching depth really starting to turn corner at a and AA. Hope rube doesnt make any stupid mistakes. I think this time he will be a little more wiser and jump gun. Looks like Joe j might advance guys a little sooner.

Colvin doesn’t bother me that much. I expected him to struggle when he got promoted and he has. He started to turn things around in clearwater and now probably has a better idea of what to work on in the offseason

It isn’t very often that a manager lets his starter give up 9 runs (without a HR no less) before pulling him. I have a feeling this may have been one of those “we’re working on something” starts.

At what point does we’re working on something actually yield some results? He’s been awful the whole way through Reading. Ridiculous amounts of walks, getting hit hard. He’s been downright awful. Also they took him out after he gave up 7 but he had 2 baserunners (2nd and 3rd). Simon gave up a hit that let them score.

Tyler Greene with a big August to bring his K% under the absurd 40% rate.
Comparison of T Greene and A Hewitt’s 2nd year after being HS daftees:
Tyler Greene: NyPenn, 214/ 251/ 316, BB 4.5%, K 36.4%, wOba 264, babip 328
Anth Hewitt : NyPenn, 223/ 255/ 395, BB 3.6%, K 31.2%, wOba 294, babip 296
Hewitt was better at Williamsport than Tyler Greene in nearly all categories.

Oh, that is a scary comp for Ty Greene to say the least. Hope it is not a prediction of things to come.

I know we’re being somewhat facetious with respect to Tyler Greene, but he really hasn’t shown any improvement unless you consider statistical variation as a positive. His K-rate stands 29.78% for the month of August. It’s difficult to characterize a ridiculously poor K-rate as an ‘improvement’.
. . . . and now I’ll make myself vulnerable to criticism. You don’t ‘come back’ from the time of year he’s had. Even more discouraging than the 80ks in 216 PA is the fact that he’s drawn only 10 walks. Here’s a kid who clearly is not seeing or reading the ball out of the pitcher’s hand. Maybe he needs contacts but I wouldn’t expect a dramatic turnaround from him next year

Altherr has done it quietly, but he is having a pretty solid year. He, like everyone else on Lakewood, had an abysmal May, but otherwise he’s showing decent speed, a reasonable amount of power and plays pretty good D. He’s certainly ahead of Jiwan James in my opinion, and would probably rank in the 18-20 range for my top 30.

I am an Altherr fan, but it would be hard to squeeze him into my top 20 right now. Too many new players have passed him, IMO.

Biggest issue is his K rate has gone up significantly in the second half, though his BB rate has increased as well.

Will be interested in the national pub scouts’ reports on Brody Colvin entering 2013. Entering 2012, most all had him in Phillies top tier prospect listing with a good live arm and a future with plenty of potential.

Is it too much to ask that our guys get simple facts right? University of Nebraska. This is why I’m glad this site exists because the area sports writers lag so far behind on giving good information on the prospects.

I always make the mistake of reading the comments section. Apparently Murph shouldn’t have written the article at all because we have Kevin Frandsen to lock it down at 3rd for the foreseeable future.

The Dodgers also gave up a couple of PTNLs in their most recent bomb trade. Hope we get in there before them.
So far it seems we’ve picked up some good ones in the July-August trades.

Need to change some rules in MLB….one to start, opportunity to trade for draft choices. Don’t need to be first rounders, but why not 2nd thru 10th rounders.
