Probably is now. Just did not have enough data from last year when he was really young and he had not pitched much this year in Williamsport when that revised list was done. He might even be top 20 with our somewhat thinner system these days.
Yuck, bad day for the system. Like the K’s from May, but he got hit around. JC is showing he is all but a non-prospect at this point. Savery is on fire though, I really think the big club can use him and Aumont for September and maybe even playoffs.
Well, given your comment, I’d point out with some irony Savery was just as lame a duck as JC at this time last year (if not more so). Rumblings have been since the trade was made that JC was a 2 pitch pitcher whose stuff would play up in short stints. I agree his time as a starting pitcher prospect are up, but it could be interesting to see what happens if they move him to the pen.
Wow. Based on that attitude, there are some hall of famers who would never have gotten the chance and maybe some minor league scrubs who had major league careers. In-the-moment thinking?
– Definitely not a good night. That being said, May’s 6 hits in 6 innings isn’t exactly being “hit around.” I’ll take 11 K and 1 bb as a positive night any day of the year.
– Hudson is cranking things up. It’s nice to see.
– Franco and Asche are struggling.
– I’m not an expert on other MLB teams, but I would assume our hitting prospects are some of the worst overall in baseball. I guess I can get a little excited about Hudson and Altherr, and Rivero a little. Valle and Galvis do a little for me because of position, but it’s really bleak overall.
Jared, don’t be so quick to generalize our position players as most of the talent is in Clearwater orLakewood with some options in Allentown and Reading.
“Talented” isn’t the same as “prospect,” though. Anthony Hewitt is talented. Valle and Galvis are really about it above Lakewood, and from there on down you’re just hoping and praying. Altherr has looked excellent in Williamsport, but only after flaming out at the level above. It is frustrating that we haven’t seen leaps forward from some of the toolsy Clearwater guys (Mattair and James have been fine, but nothing special, and Castro’s been mysteriously hurt for awhile now). Having Gilles on the field would have helped, but obviously that’s not happening this season.
Combined with the trades and Colvin’s disappointing season, it’s not really the best moment to be following the system. But then you watch what’s happening at the big league level, and . . . it certainly could be worse!
Dubious stat……….Anthony Hewitt is second in the SALLY for Ks (139), behind KAN’s Trayce Thompson who has 147—–but has 40 more ABs. The kid should go to the FIL this fall and just hit curve balls for 8 hours a day.
I read an aritcle, though, that the Phils spent a little more money in the draft this year than they usually do. They were in the middle of the pack in terms of spending and you have to consider that they don’t have high draft picks. The farm system could receive a nice shot in the arm after all the prospects in the 2011 draft get settled in.
I like the draft this year, think the Phillies got good value for their money, agree that part of the reason they didn’t spend more was draft position, and don’t think that draft spending is a great metric to evaluate drafting strategy.
But “middle of the pack” is not really accurate. With spending way up league wide, the Philles were WELL below average (and below the median).
September might be a tryout month in part should their lead remain high or more-so. Not only might they give the big 4 (5?) less demanding innings amounts and with a game wrapped up they could give Savery, Mathieson and Schwim some auditioning for potential inclusion in spring training candidacy to be pen-worthy. Savery would be extra interesting since many here–including myself–thought his days of being a MLB pitcher were gone.
We know that the pen needs another lefty to complement Bastardo. Maybe Savery can fill that roloe a little bit this season and more next season.
IMO, Aumont is not quite ready for his MLB debut. He needs more copnsistency but he is not far behind. He’s got time on his side.
As to Schwim and Matty, Schwim’s numbers say he is ready for the test. Matty is still hanging on through all the barriers he’s overcome. IMO, he should get a full and fair trial toward the end of this season. It’s time for the Phils to fish or cut bait with him. He deserves a shot at some MLB team. If not the Phils then elsewhere. Should he show well in a Sept call-up, he either should be a valid candidate for the pen OR used as partial trade bait over the off-season. He might not bring a lot back, but he could be added to another or so to complete a deal.
Hint:We could use a 3rd baseman in reserve for Polly.
Why the pen for Mathieson? He’s done very well as a starter. If the team uses a six man rotation, I would give him serious consideration. Dave Bush and Kyle Kendrick also deserve a look.
Yes, he really has come on recently. Now up to around .280 (?); 3 hits tonight. A 3rd round choice; they must think a lot of his potential and he is beginning to reward their thinking. He could add some muscle-weight over the off-season a la Galvin.
He apparently plays a very good center field…and his speed should lead to stolen bases once he gets proper instruction on that aspect of the game.
P.S. Did I see a HR in each game for Rivero? Many here would love to get a realistic analysis as to his being a “capable” 3rd baseman post Polanco for the Phils in ’13…after Polly’s contract runs out. There seems to be none-such near ready in our system for then.
The big bugaboo seems to be his glove, a valid concern for a team that relies on pitching and defense as primary. Is there any feeling that with concentrated fielding work he could fit the role? A year at LV in ’12 must be the FO aim. NOT to push him too hard in the remaining games of ’11.
So…please render your own thoughts on the subject….
The guy was a SS his entire career before this year. Maybe it takes more than one season to develop 3b instincts. You don’t take guys who were Shortstops at age 22, and make them LF at age 24.
And he’s hit like an all-glove, no-bat SS his entire career until this year. Just pointing it out. Anyone banking on him as an option in 2013 seems very premature.
Need to figure out the Rollins thing first and then the Galvis thing. Rollins will be 34 in 2013 and if he and Freddy both perform the next few years like they have this year, a stop gap at 3rd base for a year would allow Rollins to shift there at age 35 (2014) and Galvis to take over SS at age 24 (assuming his continued development).
Some very smart people on this site have posted before that Rollins’ numbers would play fine at 3B. I know everyone wants to believe that all gold glove shortstops can continue winning gold gloves and playing great defense at SS until they’re 40 but it doesn’t work that way most of the time.
I’m one of the people – hopefully “smart” – who said that Rollin’s hitting would play surprisingly well as a third basemen, give current output by major league third basemen.
Even worse? Truly clueless. Do yourself a favor next year, and grab a copy of Bill James handbook and learn something. Rollins consistently finishes as a top 10 offensive SS and his numbers would make him a top 10 NL 3B nearly every season.
Yes, when you see how the Phillies took advantage of Cody Ransome last night, it reminds you that the fielding part of the game is absolutely necessary to win. Rivero needs to field better if he is to be considered. The bat is adequate.
Sosa has been interesting. He’s 9 – 1 with a 1.73 ERA. He’s 7 -1 with a 1.69 ERA in his last 10 games and he gave up 6 runs in one of those games. He’s nearly unhittable. He will be 21 in September and he’s still in the DSL. He had a tiny ERA last year and the Phils didn’t bring him state-side. He’s not a big K guy so he gets by on hitters hitting ’em where they is (sorry for the grammar). It will be very interesting to see if he gets a chance next year.
I agree that all that data on Sosa means he is probably not much of a prospect. He probably has really good control and command, but not enough stuff for the Phillies to want to promote him.
Home run H-Mart! And a pretty good game for Hudson. Good start for L. Martinez.
Curious to see May give up 4 runs against the 11K/1BB line. His K numbers continue to be almost comical.
Two homers for Rivero today. Lots of Ks to go with them, but homers are good.
Savery with another solid relief appearance.
One guy to keep an eye on is Lino Martinez..he is still just 18 and he is 6-2 and a 2.97 ERA. Hudson has been hot. Batting .333 last 10 games. Nice to see HMart with a HR. Reading and Clearwater struggling. Lakewood trying to make a late run for the playoffs. Not sure why Manzanillo is still pitching this yr. Was awful with 7 walks last night. He has a 6.37 ERA in last 10 games with 31 walks in 41 innings. I would have Nesseth or Lino Martinez get the call up to Lakewood and make the final starts for Manzanillo.
I remember Ramirez tailing off last year too. Didn’t he have have some sort of hip problem and had surgery to fix in in the off-season (or am I thinking of someone else)? If he had a a bad hip, I’m wondering if it’s bothering him again? Not trying to make excuses, just wondering.
Yes he did have a hip problem, but that is not what’s wrong with him. He only has 1 and a half pitches. He has a great fastball and a breaking pitch that he can’t command. It’s been pretty obvious for awhile that his future is in the bullpen.
How about getting some AB’s for a player who wasn’t going to play much in Lakewood till the end of the season. Franco at 3B now, and Geancarlo has not excelled in the field at 3B, regardless, they are not replacing Murphy at 1B, and Bill Rice looks to be a semi-regular in the OF/DH crew with Alvarez, Collier and Hewitt. At WPT he can vie with Stassi at 1B and alternate there and at DH with Stassi and Stumpo. Mendez is just coming off an injury as well.
DSL- Diego Gonzalez, CF,lead off usually, quite a few AB’s at .343. Born in 1991, so older players will be starting off in States out of draft. Delvi Francisco came on to play as regular and get over .301, OF. Youngish Middle Infield combo of Jairo Cardoza and Angelo Mora came on to hit .250 now, season almost over. These players can be candidates to come to States next Spring Training, the Middle Infielders can work on some fielding there.
I’m also looking for Astudillo (3b? ) out of the Venezuela lg. This guy has struck out ONLY ONE TIME IN THE WHOLE SEASON. Incredible. He also has been hitting in the mid-300s.
WPT- Mendez at DH,Stassi remains at 1B. Something to watch as a sign of something. Another solid start by Lino Martinez, 2 Weeks left in season, about, no need for shifting him around now.
RDG- You’d think a HR in each game of Double Header and now at a solid .285 at AA would temper the squawks of the “let’s trade a good prospect for Casey Blake and assume the remainder of the 6 million salary for September and for next season as well or give him Million and a Half buyout, or somebody of that nature” crowd, but I guess not. Rivero did not play much at AAA by reason of LVIP playing Orr, Frandsen, Barfield, and also not shifting out Overbeck. Either one or more of the more veteran of those are scheduled for a September call up or Sandberg was playing his guys. As to the anecdotal accounts of massive fielding deficincies of Rivero, not proven.
I’ve seen Rivero play more than a handful of games at 3B the tag of butcher is well deserved on a number of fronts as you evaluate an infielder. The only thing he has going for him there is a pretty good arm.
His reaction time to his left is slow, his hands are hard and his footwork needs a great deal of work. Its possible with some off season work he could improve his hands and his footwork but its very difficult to coach up reaction time. Hence Rivero does not project as an MLB 3B.
Not sure that’s fair. He’ll miss a month to end the season, but he was going to Lakewood next year regardless. I think he made some progress this year, and if we aren’t ready to cross Collier off any kind of list, I think Dugan gets another season, too.
Further on the topic of system depletion in the upper levels, check out the line-up/pitcher in Reading tonight. Who on that team is most likely to play in the major leagues? I can’t make a case for anybody but Tuffy (and that’s as a third or fourth catcher).
They have a couple of potential cup-o-coffee guys (Mitchell, Rizzotti, Ramirez) but not much more. Good news is that they have a few prospects at AAA which is better than last season when it was basically just Brown.
Clevlen. He was there last year for a cup of coffee. He’s clearly better than AA at least. As far as prospects I imagine Rivero will get there, but not as a full time 3B. Perhaps as the next Wes Helms.
Tuffy, Rivero, Hyatt and JC Ramirez will get to the majors. Ramirez will probably be a decent reliever. Tuffy will get a year or two as an old man, like Costs.
I agree Ramirez and Hyatt get there for sure (I have hopes for Cloyd, too); I just meant of the guys playing yesterday.
Rivero’s rapid demotion back to AA probably tells you all you need to know about the organization’s feelings there. Ditto Rizz repeating the level at age eleventy million.* If those guys get chances, it probably won’t be in Philly.
I was under the impression Rivero was moved back down from AAA to make roster room for Jack Cust, who they want to audition for a major league bench role. I don’t mean to imply the organization thinks highly of Rivero or sees him as close to being a 3B in the majors- I have no idea- but I don’t think the duration of his LHV stint was entirely a reflection on him.
A guy originally drafted as a shortstop (not by the Phils), and he can’t glove at 3rd base? Somebody here said he had enough arm for that position, so if you were Rivero wouldn’t you spend the whole off-season in getting fielding instruction and practicing…? The Phils would surely lend a hand (good coach and facilities at Clwtr).!
Practice might help but it takes talent and physically ability. Some guys just don’t have soft hands or nimble feet regardless of how many groundballs they take.
The one game I watched Rivero play in AAA might be reflective of his talents. Runners on 2nd/3rd and two out. Groundball to Rivero, he can throw to first but instead elects to tag the runner running from 2nd. The runner from 2nd backtracks long enough for the run to score from third. (Since the runner from 2nd wasn’t a force play, run counts.) It was a bad decision, the Ironpigs lost the game by one run. That can not have left a positive impression.
Unfortunately for Rivero, with Franco, Martinez and some could say Mattair on his heels moving up in the sytem, the Phillies do not have a lot of time to expend in upgrading and developing his defensive liabilities. If he is that deficient at the hot corner, then he be better off moving out to LF and letting his bat take him to MLB.
If you are right then it is up to Rivero . He pay an instructor and work his butt off in the winter. Or he can be maybe a Jason Micheals and be a second liner all his life. I have no time for fringe players who won’t work or play winter ball.
Well he has had some misfortune in the last year—-had his season end on 8/25/2010 due to a left wrist sprain that required surgery on 9/2/2010 to repair a scaphoid fracture. So, I can only assume that slowed him up a bit out of the gate in March/April and now he is picking it up at the bat, but his glove, oh my!.
Surely, Polanco will not have a full season next year given his injury history and Rollins may be walking. Not sure anyone is ready to be given a shot even at a platoon situation at 3B. Though, I do believe Galvis could be ready at SS with a strong finish this year.
The Phillies have always thought highly of Jason Bartlett when with Tampa and now with San Diego. Maybe there is a trade scenario there. I have a problem sacrificing one of the best fielding teams in baseball because of a platoon situation at 3B and SS.
May had a pretty good night.
Bad: 2 doubles and a HR.
Good: 11 K’s, 1 BB, 6:1 groundout/flyout ratio.

He apparently plays a very good center field…and his speed should lead to stolen bases once he gets proper instruction on that aspect of the game.
Where next season??

Thanks.

He’s an absolute butcher in the field. The only way he makes it as a MLB player is if he has a crazy good bat, and is then shifted to left field.

I wouldn’t even worry about the lack of internal options. At worst they’ll find a stropgap FA (sort of like Polanco) to plug in for a couple of years.

LikeLike
Why would Rollins want to shift to 3B? His numbers would play even worse at 3B.
LikeLike
Some very smart people on this site have posted before that Rollins’ numbers would play fine at 3B. I know everyone wants to believe that all gold glove shortstops can continue winning gold gloves and playing great defense at SS until they’re 40 but it doesn’t work that way most of the time.

I’m one of the people – hopefully “smart” – who said that Rollin’s hitting would play surprisingly well as a third basemen, give current output by major league third basemen.
I still don’t think they should move him to 3rd.

Yari Sosa is pretty damn good.

I fully expect JC Ramirez to be in the bullpen very soon.

I see Geo Mendez has been moved to Williamsport. Are they trying to strengthen the lineup for a final run?

I’m not trying to be mean but he’s lost large parts of 2 seasons to injuries now. The guy just cant buy luck at this point.

I don’t see how you can write him off. It’s not like he’s missing the season, he’s missing a month of a level he was repeating.

LikeLike
