Romero to the DL, Zagurski Called Up

The Phils placed LHP JC Romero on the 15 disabled list with a calf strain and called up LHP Mike Zagurski from AAA Lehigh Valley. Zagurski, 28, was the Phils 12th round selection in the 2005 draft and has spent parts of two seasons with the big club.  In the early going for Lehigh Valley, Zagurski has appeared in three games, without allowing an earned run in 3.2 innings. He has walked one, struck out 7 and earned one save.

Called up to take Zagurski’s spot in the Lehigh Valley ‘pen is RHP Chance Chapman. Chapman, 27, was the Phils 8th round pick of the 2007 draft. In 29 appearances for Reading last year, Chapman was 2-3 with a 5.36 ERA in 50.1 IP.  He walked 22, struck out 27 and had a WHIP of 1.45. Chapman has been impressive in the early going this year, with three scoreless appearances, allowing just a lone hit in 3.2 innings.

Clearwater Threshers Report–4/18/11

Recap:  The Threshers went 3-4 on the week, dropping 2 of 3 to Daytona (Cubs), taking 2 of 3 from Brevard County (Brewers), then losing the opener of another series with Daytona.  Clearwater sits at 7-4, a game out of first in the FSL North.  The most notable news out of Clearwater has been the loss of Brody Colvin and Jonathan Singleton.  Colvin was placed on the DL with a back injury and Singleton sat out all week with a left arm injury.  He made it back into Sunday’s game, but after a caught stealing while he was batting, he didn’t take the field. AAA Weekend Update 17 April 2011

Friday–Lehigh Valley went back over .500 with a 9-4 victory over Rochester, taking two out of three from the RedWings. The ‘Pigs fell behind early on a series of miscues, but bounced back with two runs in the fourth when two runs scored on back to back sac flies by Josh Barfield and Matt Miller. The ‘Pigs put up a four spot in the 7th, when Rochester got very sloppy. The big blow in an inning that featured errors, wild pitches and run scoring bunt singles was a two run single by Ronnie Belliard. Lehigh Valley tacked on three more in the 8th, two of them coming on an RBI double by Delwyn Young. Nate Bump started and went 4 innings giving up 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits.  Drew Carpenter picked up the win in relief, pitching three hitless innings.  A big night at the plate for Kevin Frandsen, who had 3 hits. Nice Phillippe Aumont article

Bob Brookover brings the words. Its nice to hear Aumont feels good about himself again. I think sometimes the human element does get lost in the mix when focusing on arm strength, walk rate, pitchability and the like, but its still vitally important. While Aumont may have had more value in the rotation, if he’s comfortable in the pen, and he rebounds to his 92-96 level fastball with his sharp curveball, there will still be plenty of value there to extract. So far so good.

Reading Phils Update 4/17

The R-Phils are off to a solid 6-3 start after a week and a half of playing.  They stand second in the Eastern Division, a game behind New Britain, and a game in front of New Hampshire.  They are 5-2 on the road, including a sweep of previously front-running New Hampshire, and 1-1 at home.  The offense has been strong, averaging 5.8 runs/game, while the pitching has held up its end as well, allowing only 3.3 runs. The offense has been a bit feast-or-famine, or they’d be a game or two better.  They’ve been shut out twice, and scored 13 runs twice.
