A Look at Lakewood, v 1.0

Hey all. As I mentioned when the season was kicking off, I’m going to come off the bench and write the Lakewood report this year. I’ve been waiting to try and accumulate some data to look at, and going forward I anticipate doing this every week or every other week, not sure what day of the week, but that’s a minor detail. I’m going to give a statistical overview, and then some thoughts on the squad and pass along any tidbits I can find. So far, I haven’t done much digging on our guys there, simply because its only been a few weeks. But I hope to have more on that as the season progresses. So, let’s get after it.

Clearwater Threshers Report (4/18-4/24)

Recap:  The Threshers went 3 and 3 on the week before taking Easter Sunday off.  They currently sit in second place in the FSL North, two games behind the Daytona Cubs.  Given the daily posting of boxscores here, I won’t rehash game-by-game highlights, but two excellent starts by Jon Pettibone bookended the week, the other outings by the heralded starting staff ranged from pretty decent (Julio Rodriguez) to pretty poor (Trevor May) and the offense got back (when he wasn’t getting himself tossed from games for arguing third strikes).  On to the stats: Continue reading Clearwater Threshers Report (4/18-4/24)

Contreras to DL, Stutes Called Up

The Phillies placed closer Jose Contreras on the DL with a flexor pronator strain and have called up RHP Mike Stutes, from AAA Lehigh Valley.  Stutes, 24, was an 11th round pick by the Phillies in the 2008 draft out of Oregon State and had been very impressive during Spring Training.  In his 7 appearances thus far this season for Lehigh Valley, Stutes was 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA and a save in his 10 innings of work. Stutes walked 4 and struck out an impressive 14 batters and comes up with a WHIP of 1.30.

From the Lehigh Valley perspective, this thins out the back end of the bullpen with Zagurski and Stutes in Philly to go along with the early struggles of Scott Mathieson. Look for Michael Schwimer, Jason Grilli and Juan Perez to pick up the slack in the short term.

Lehigh Valley Report 21 April 2011

In light of the daily box score update, I think it may make some sense to do away with daily game summaries and attempt to focus the weekly updates on how particular players have been performing along with general team updates.  So, along those lines each week I will update half of the team.  Infielders, catchers and starters one week and then outfielders and relievers the next. That should allow a constant continuing picture of what we have at the AAA level.  Look for that on Thursday or Friday each week.  I hope to combine that with occasional additional features and player interviews throughout the season.
