Jim Salisbury has the scoop on twitter. 6’4 LHP. Fits the mold for the Phillies in terms of the money they like to spend. Should be interesting, and I’ll post more details as they are available.

I might be off base, but it seems the Phillies have signed more Latin players in the 300k-400k range than in previous seasons. I seem to remember more 100-200k signings in previous years.

I know nothing about this guy but his size, age and his being a lefty makes this look like a nice gamble

He’s going to be good simply because of the ‘y’ in his name.

Sounds good. I guess since he’s only 16 we might not see him in the GCL for two seasons? Always good to stockpile talent though.

Zavala will probably be the top lefty in the system after the Phils trade Biddle for an ace after the 2012 season.

Frankie Zavala sounds like a good pitcher’s name…works for me.

Another future name for the Sarge to butcher. Does he shave???

^ Oh yeah, Sarge is gonna murder this. But can you imagine how good this kid’s name would sound rolled out slowly by Kalas?
Being only 16, it will be ages before he could make it to the show even on the fast track. 2016 at soonest.

I still miss the idea of Kalas saying the name “Doe-MING-go SAN-tana” – the legend never dies.

Despite some plotting out the entire future based on a sentence on CSN, here’s something: This season Miguel Nunez and Lino Martinez both went to GCL in their first seasons after singning at 16. Maybe he won’t be in MLB before 20.
Increases in bonuses- factor in inflation, but maybe the lower levels players still don’t make any more than they did- who knows?

It would be cool if he is related to Cedric Bixler-Zavala. I’d like to see the Mars Volta do a 33 minute long version of the National Anthem. Solid signing – I know nothing about him, but the Phils seem to do a good job getting these mid-level Latino players brought in, and he certainly does seem to have a good, projectable frame.

Cheese at 16 I was short and had zits. It would be hard getting used to a new country at a tender age but XST might help. I can remember the trouble Edgar Renteria had. At one point he called his brother and said they gave him a piece of paper “what should he do with it”. It was his paycheck.

even if his height is inflated an inch or two, at 16 he still could grow to 6-6 in a heartbeat…

Is that two big dollar signings so far this year? Fransisco Silva ($200,000) being the other? Maikel Franco was another guy that was signed last year and sent strait to GCL (I think).

Did anyone hear of any other teams going after this kid??

I appreciate that the Phils continue to make an investment in international free agents. Hope that the phils get some contributions from this area, looking back, the meager investment in Ruiz has paid huge dividends. Recently, the Phils seem to take a very bookish methodical pace to the international area, nothing like any splashy million dollar signings, but a couple steady 200-300K signings each year.

Miguel Nunez didn’t go straight to GCL, he went to the DSL first and was there for like 2 or 3 games and then brought to the GCL. It makes me wonder if the Phillies brass lost faith in having the DSL develop pitchers they spent a lot of money to sign. Whenever you look at the DSL Phillies over the years the really young pitchers in their first season barely pitch at all, so they don’t get much work there. So I could see him going to the GCL Phillies and being there for 2 seasons(like I expect Nunez to be) unless he performs very well in his first year.

Sounds good, but we won’t know what we have for a few years. Any scouting report on the kid? velocity? does he have a feel for any secondary pitches?

Big dollar signings this season- Venezuelan SS Anderson Gonzalez- $300,000.
DSL- GCL – due to waiting around for draft related things and such, the DSL usually starts sooner, so they can give a player a couple of games there before the GCL season begins. I believe this is what happened with Nunez, this season. Also a player can be assigned to DSL , if there is a lull in their opportunities to participate for a time (Lendy Castillo this season) now that players can be moved relatively freely from foreign lands and back since the passage of the most recent work visa laws regarding MLB.
