Phils Add Cesar Carillo

The Phils claimed 26 year old RHP Cesar Carillo out of the Padres organization off of waivers yesterday and added him to their 40 man roster. The 26 year old was a 1st round pick by the Padres in the 2005 draft out of the University of Miami.  Once very highly touted (Padres #1 prospect in their system according to Scout.som in 2007), Carillo’s stock fell after Tommy John surgery in 2007 and has struggled to regain his form.  He was 5-14 this season with a 5.60 ERA for the Padres AAA club in Portland, to go along with a WHIP of 1.48 in just over 150 innings of work.

  1. “basically we traded Quintin Berry for this guy since the Pads claimed Berry off waivers earlier this year”

er… That’s really bad logic in my opinion. We more traded Quintin Berry for David Herndon, but even that doesn’t really work. At least I’d buy into that example though.

  2. Seems like a worthless move to me. I guess the Phils get to look a him for a couple weeks but should they really keep him over Naylor, Flande, Escalona?
Thought they should add an INF/PR since Rollins is day to day.

  3. Good Move. He is from the same High School as McNab.

You can never have too much good pitching. Certainly worth giving him a year at AAA.

To see if one more year will help him with the Tommy John.

  4. Does he need to stay on the 40-man all off season (and/or next season) to remain a Phil? Or can he be assigned to a team and removed from the 40-man?

If he has to stay, I wonder about protecting him over some other players.

  5. I think its a great move. This guy was once a highly touted prospect and is certainly worth a flyer to see if he might ever get back to that level. As for Naylor and Flande, neither has any shot to ever pitch in the big leagues unfortunately.

  6. Murray ….. Great move ? the guy stinks , his numbers are not worthy of a 40 man roster spot. TJ surgery in 2007 thats more than an 18 month recovery

Are the Phillies that good they can’t haved a guy with 27 hrs on their 40 man roster?

In fact they have no one in the minors with 20 or more hrs

  7. JK, If you were watching, the last 4 appearances (before the DL) from Baez were actually OK. So let’s see how he looks in September.
And as far as Bozied is concerned, he’s just an organizational type player, in the mold of Mike Hessman. Not worthy of a 40 man roster spot. He’s probably surface on another AA or AAA team next year.

  8. And we all know that when it comes to Baez we only need to see 4 appearences to know that he is a quality major league pitcher, just like we know with Mathiesion we only need to see 2 appearance to know he is not a major league pitcher.

  9. Ah JK, Baez has 655 major league innings over a 9-year period. That would appear to be the track record that’s being used.

As for Bozied, can he even be added to the 40-man roster and kept in the off-season?

Not sure what the rules are for minor leaguers with that much service time. At this point, I expect he’s a FA unless he agrees to resign?

  10. More importantly, do I think Matheison, given 650 innings of work, could produce a track record as inconsistent as Baez, and at least match Baez’s ineffectiveness THIS year at about a fifth of the cost, yes I do think that he could.

  11. And JK I think the Phillies did not feel that way, or they would have certainly given the job to one of the other guys (Bastardo, Mathieson or Zagurski). But at the major league level, they have been hit around, granted, a small sample size. The Phillies over and over again go for the veteran over the rookie or past injured player. Now my guess is Mathieson will start next season at LV. Maybe Bastardo captures a spot with the Phillies, if he ever shows consistency at the major league level.

  12. Tagg bozied is a FA after the season, he doesn’t need to be protected. The phils if they want him can outbid any team who offers him a contract.

  13. Snakeman — not sure why you are such a Baez fan. How do you reconcile waiting for Bastardo needing to be consistent when Baez hasn’t been consistent for years, yet is given a chance after chance?

  14. Carillo: no harm, no foul.

He is an “investment” to be heading to spring training with the rest of the prospect guys who will play for our minor lg teams in ’11. A small investment with a chancy outcome. Like dipping into an uncertain player pool in the Independent Lgs. You really never know what you’re gonna get, fire or ice.

Yet, since he was a first round pick now encumbered by a slow cure of back problems, it COULD turn out that he gets better somewhere in ’11…and/or shows real progress, MAYBE he would then or soon provide another arm in the mix.

Nothing to get excited about now. Time tells the tale.

  15. I would rather have him on the 40 man than Robertson. I think it was a good pickup. If he does bad, the phils can just designate him for assignment and have a chance to be able to keep him without him being on the 40 man roster.

  16. They should just fold the franchise if they aren’t able to resign career minor-leaguer Tagg Bozied.

As for Carillo, as I said before, I trust in our scouts that they think there might be something there. There’s plenty of room on the 40 man this winter as it is.

  17. haha tagg boized hit those homeruns in DOUBLE A look at cody ransom for further examples …. carillo is pretty much a projct for next year, he has had trouble recovering from TJ surgery and also had some back issues btw Does anyone have an up to date scouting report on Carillo ????

  18. Sounds like the Padres claimed him back…

    San Diego Padres
Designated for assignment: RHP Craig Italiano
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Nick Schumacher, OF Rymer Liriano

The Padres pared Craig Italiano from the 40-man roster in order to make room (again) for Cesar Carrillo, who lasted only a matter of days with the Phillies after they claimed him on waivers when San Diego tried to sneak him through. The 26-year-old Carrillo went just 5-14, 5.60 in 27 starts for Triple-A Portland—with a correspondingly poor 95-to-57 strikeout-to-walk ratio—but he’s proven with back-to-back 150-inning seasons that his arm is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. At his best, he throws a low-90s heater with sink and two solid secondary pitches, suggesting all sorts of relief possibilities if the starting thing doesn’t work out.

  19. To add to the fun, the Padres DFA’d Carillo AGAIN to make room for Chris Young. This guy can’t catch a break!
