Here is where you discuss your prospect-related thoughts. I’ll give you a bunch of box scores to start
GCL Phillies won 6-3. Series is tied at 1
Williamsport lost 6-1.
Lakewood won 14-2.
Clearwater lost 2-0 and lost 5-2.
Reading lost 10-7.
Lehigh Valley won 9-3.
Go!
Nice night for Lakewood – Singelton with a double and two walks to go with 4 rbis, James scored three runs and May looked pretty dominant (7k, 1bb).

I’ll lead off with the bad: Diekman had to have the worst line for someone who improved his ERA. 2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 0 ER, he had 2 errors of his own, WP, BB, HBP and he took the loss. Did I miss anything?
May’s outing was very good. 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 7K, BB. he has 182 Ks on the year but 81 BBs. Since moving back to to A, he has 92Ks and 20 BBs. Let’s hope he can build on it next year.
Singleton is snapping back or adjusting or whatever you like to call it. He had 4 RBIs yesterday. He’s hitting .297 and his OBP is .399.
I also like Edgar Garcia’s line at A+: 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER and 5 Ks. He’s shown glimpses of that talent I know he has. He just has to do it consistently.
Nice job by the GCL Phils. They fought back to grab that 2nd game. Impressive since many of the starters are now up in Wmsprt: Biddle, Bonilla, Manzanillo and throw in Altherr’s promotion (Dugan too.) I’m not complaining.. just saying.

Alan,
If they post pitch speeds please post them tomorrow for Biddle. Just curious what he is throwing this late in the season. Not sure if the stadium posts speeds. If not thanks anyways and enjoy the game.

Singleton is finishing strong and really making a statement. Although Brown will likely remain eligible as a rookie and thus as a prospect for 2011, Singleton should be right behind him at #2…and then Colvin, Cosart & May.

If I sit behind the plate I might catch a glimpse of the radar guns. Otherwise they don’t post the speed on the scoreboard and even if they did, the sun glare makes it impossible to read the board for several innings.

Brown needs to have less than 130 at bats (check) and less than 45 days on the roster (no check) to be a rookie I think. So looks like colvin, cosart and singleton are our top guys.

JoeD, its pretty easy in all honestly to catch a glimpse of radar gun readings. I’ll see what I come up with.
Ed, time in September doesn’t count to that 45 day limit. So if Brown doesn’t cross the plate appearance threshhold, he retains rookie eligibility. And some publications like Baseball America ignore the service time rule anyway so Brown will be our #1 in their 2011 handbook.

The rule is “less than 45 days when rosters are limited to 25 men”…Sept doesn’t count against him as rosters are expanded. He came up July 27 or 28th so he’ll only be around 32-33 days of service time for that calculation.

Now 9-0, but it doesn’t take away from the amazing performance by Tim Brown, one hit and no walks through 7 innings (WIP of 0.143!) Brown graduated from Pittsburg State University in Kansas in 2009 and was playing for the Lincoln, Nebraska Saltdogs in the American Association, when his contract was purchased by the Phillies earlier this season. He is 23 and has pitched well since the Phillies got him with an ERA of 1.50 and averaging one walk per 8 innings.

Got to talk to Tagg Bozied and Matt German last night at a local bar R-Phils frequent after games, was blown away how nice they are. I didn’t want to be a pest just offered to buy them a pitcher of beer in apreciation for having watched them all year, got to talk with them a bit. Was interesting to talk to them and what they had to say. First its pretty obvious that Tagg doesn’t like Domonic Brown’s stance as he was making fun of it on the TV, I’m refering to the body wobble. Also they expressed a lot of frustration about manager Steve Roadcap. It was just very interesting to hear them talk I didn’t hang around too long as though not to be a bother.
Some side notes Tagg launched his 25th homerun of the season and is now batting .320, and this guy missed 31 games, he’s a shoe-in for the batting title of the league as running in 2nd is team mate Mike Spidale who was down around .305. I know Tagg was brought in as protection for Dom this year but I wonder what the future holds for him, I know he’s 31 and has those injury issues but the man just mashes the ball. Really a sad story everything that happened with him with the walk off years ago and then his wife’s accident too. He seems so determined even though time is def not on his side.
Roadcap def leaves pitchers in way too long, I know I will get someone telling me about how its player development first and winning second. Naylor gave up a 5 spot in the 6th, no body was warming up at all to put in. Kissock surrenderd 3 the next inning and was allowed to pitch the next inning. I don’t see how this helps players progress. First of all they’re not left in like that in the majors, and every other minor league team I’ve seen on every other level and teams that play Reading have their pitcher’s on much shorter leashes. All it does is inflate their ERA’s and probably cause some mental and confidence issues.
Other notes it was nice of Matt Rizzotti and Vance Worley to accept their award via the video board. Matt is def not camera shy, Vance was pitcher of the year and Matt was Unsung hero of the year. I swear I heard GM say that Matt was named to the post seasons EL all star team..
Leaving out community awards, other once received by the team
Team MVP- Mike Spidale
Big Bat Award- Tagg Bozied
Player of the Game award (for whole season)- Tagg Bozied
Speedster Award- Mike Spidale
Pitcher- Vance Worley
Unsung Hero- Matt Rizzotti

Saw alot of baseball the last several days at Brighthouse. Congrats to the GCL Phils. They played nearly flawless ball. Roly DeArmas and his coached did a good job on the fundamentals while the Jays threw the ball all over the place early to allow the Phils to jump to the lead and they were never caught. I was impressed by the arm of Franco at third. He has improve greatly since the spring at the hot corner. He hit the ball hard with nothing to show for it but just missed a homer down the line in left foul. The three or so picks in the dirt by Duffy at first in today’s game were key. Rios’s triple down the line was scalded by the Jays first baseman. Mendez came up with his RISP hit. Diaz called a good game behind the plate and looks like he has beat out Mitchell as the No. 1 catcher. They relied on older players like Gump with clutch hitting and Brown on the mound to dominate the Jays today and win the GCL trophy.
As far as the Threshers are concerned I believed Derrick Mitchell is poised for a break out season next year in the Reading outfield. He just might have enough to become a 5 tool player after watching him play this year in Clearwater. Last night he climbed the wall in front of the visitors bull pen in left center to pull back in a ball for an out that was about to leave the park. He then lined a ball down the left field line that he stretched into a double beating the throw with a great hand slide. Several of his long drives this week to left were knocked down by the winds blowing in from left that may have left any other park like the one in Reading. Fidel Hernandez hit the ball hard in the second game and should be Reading’s second baseman next year. Jim Murphy made a couple of strong plays at third. Now if he could only start hitting a little. Ruf had some key hits but I thought he was a little stronger defensively at first than he showed. Tim Kennelly’s right arm might be tight as the trainer worked it out before the start of the game but I wished him well in Arizona and encouraged Joel Naughton to keep his batting average over .300 to end the season as they walked down the third base line to start last night’s second game.

Glad to find another Derrick Mitchell fan around here! I haven’t been able to see him play, but from his stat lines this season it looks like he’s got power, speed and has shown the ability to hit for an okay average this season. If he can stay in center field, he might develop into a real prospect. It would be nice to see that from a ‘toolsy’ guy that people had written off.

Mitchell is a 6-year minor league free agent after this season. Won’t be with the Phils unless they put him on the 40-man roster, which is unlikely.

On Mitchell: though he is a 6 yr minor lg player, even though the Phils don’t want to use a spot on their 40 with him…yet, if they put him on the AAA LV roster in time for the Rule 5 draft in December, any team drafting him woulsd have to keep him all next season on their 25…like Herndon with the Phils this season.
Question is: is he attractive enough as an “accomplished” player to take that spot?
Odds are, it seems to me, long for a plucking this season for some other team.

Philly Jameel, the Phils intend to bring up players when they come home tomorrow. They didn’t want to rush players across the country for a single game.
From the Williamsport game. Biddle was all over the place, walking six batters. He wasn’t even getting particularly squeezed either. His fastball sat around 89-91. His curveball came in at 71-72 and looked particularly sharp. While Biddle kept walking hitters, the MV Scrappers never really got a hard hit off him. Obviously a work in progress.
Eric Pettis threw a fastball around 86-89 with a breaking pitch around 77 mph. Highly effective as he locates well.
Our old friend Julian Sampson made an appearance and pitched two innings, striking out three. Sampson threw mostly fastballs consistantly at 90-91 mph. Occasionally he threw a breaking pitch at 82-84.
Chris Johnson is the ‘Cutters nominal closer and he threw almost exclusively fastballs at 91-92 mph. He has a strong fastball and good command, but he appears to be a one pitch pitcher.
Kelly Dugan can certainly drive the ball. He looked shaky on the bases though, hitting a double when he really should’ve had a triple, and nearly getting thrown out at third after he misread a base hit. His defense is also suspect, and these are things the Phillies will have him working on I’m certain.

I would think they’d consider moving Dugan to first base. Big guy, pretty agile.

Everybody – keep your eye on Eric Massingham. I reported earlier this year that when my son saw him at Lakewood, he was lighting up the radar gun in the mid to high 90s – something which is especially noteworthy. I am curious to know if anyone else has observed this about him. If so, he’s a huge sleeper candidate for next year and could end up in Clearwater with what would have to be the best collection of young arms of any team in the minors (Cosart, Colvin, May, Zeid, Massingham, etc. . . – WOW!).

With Dugan being a RH thrower, I would like to see the Phillies try to teach him 3rd base in instructional league. It would increase his value if he could play a credible 3rd base, rather than 1st base or LF. It would also loosen the logjam in next years Lakewood OF.
I suppose if they thought he could play 3b, they would have tried it already, so not holding out too much hope.

I saw him 89-94. He has a hip rotation and delivery a little like Lincecum which makes the ball seem to jump out of his hand, and makes it a little tough to pickup his overhand curve. Location was a bit spotty.

Mike77,
I agree and have mentioned it before. Dugan played 1B in high school (which must say somehting about his poor defense). But from all reports I have heard he is not a particularly good fielder; though he did play one inning at Shortstop! (When asked one of scouting directors said it was just an oddity, no plans to move him. But it gave me hope.)

Bully for the suggestion to move Dugan, i.e, try him, at 3rd base where the cupbpard is nearly bare. He is a switcher, so he could go both ways at the plate. Initially he was given a center field assignment but I don’t know if he could match the multitudes working that position in their lowly minors.
To mint a phrase…Nothing ventured, nothing …well, you know what I mean.

Mitchell- a 6 year minor league free agent becomes a free agent prior to the rule 5 draft and teams will not be able to restrict them on any roster unless they re-sign prior to the rule 5 draft. There is really not much reason for such a player to re-sign prior to the rule 5 draft, but in Mitchell’s case he would likely re-sign after the draft because it appears he will have opportunity to start in Reading as OF next season. Also, there is no need for a big issue to be made of the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft or minor league rosters , as only the limited number of players who would qualify for the rule 5 draft and not on the 40 man roster need to be protected and the roster limits are 37 for AAA and 34 for AA.

The bottom of the system is definately looking good this year. GCL already with a championship, Williamsport looking to win the wild card and Lakewood should be a favorite to win for 2nd straight year. Some guys with bright futures:
Pitchers:Cosart, May, Colvin, Pettibone, Shreve, Rodriguez, Lugo, Biddle, Pettis, Claypool, Borup, Hollands, Garner is a maybe and Walter and Musser just signed
Catcher : Valle, Rupp, Klocke
infielders: Singelton, Barnes, Hernandez, Malcolm (think he starts at Lakewood next yr), and Mendez (they list him as a 1b but does play of)
of:James (this was only his first full season as a position players), Castro, Alvarez, Altherr, Dugan, Santana (struggled this year but still 18), Eldemire, and Hudson

What has Hudson shown that indicates he has a bright future? I don’t care how good a defensive CF he plays when you haven’t shown the ability to hit AT ALL. The Phillies converted guys to pitcher who showed better hitting than Hudson has in Jesus Sanchez & Lendy Castillo and given that he has a rocket arm from the OF he may wind up being converted after next season if he once again fails to hit. He’ll find himself back in Williamsport for his 3rd professional minor league season. That’s not exactly looking ‘bright’ to me.

The guys on the list are high ceiling guys. I should have worded that way. That is why I included his name. I also included Walter, Eldemire, Walter, and Musser and none of them have done anything. He has potential but I wouldn’t start him at Lakewood next year. I have Altherr, Alvarez, Dugan, Santana, and Eldemire ahead of him. He may repeat at Williamsport. I stayed away from some of the older prospects like Murray and Duffy who hit well but I believe they are both 23 and playing in GCL

Hewitt repeating Lakewood. That is bad news for one of Santana, Altherr, Alvarez, Dugan, or Eldemire. Somebody will lose ABs to Hewitt.
I would like the team to hold Hewitt and Collier back in extended spring next year. Let the guys who performed get their ABs and stay on schedule. It will be interesting to see how they sort this out.
LikeLike
Bummer on Hewitt staying in Lakewood. Dugan would have to play 1st in order for them all to get AB’s – and that’s really not ideal for his development. He should be getting reps in the outfield. Good idea to hold Hewitt and Collier back in EST. Maybe need to hold Santana back too?

Collier is like a faded dream. Soon to become a nightmare if he doesn’t find his way . A lot of athleticism but lousy results…even when he wasn’t hurt.
Should be a serious brushing up in instructional lg. Hewitt going to Caribbean sunshine, but Collier might be ready to participate…??
Have the players going to insrtl lg been named?

Mitchell – It is apparent that the Phillies like him. This site had him unprotected last year for the Rule 5 draft but the Phillies had him added to the LV roster in November which would protect him (unless I’m missing something). I have no idea what this off season has in store for him and all the weird minor league rules make it hard to figure out what is going on.
On a side note Derrick was hurt in tonight’s game and was taken to the hospital with a hand injury. Sounds like it is a large cut with no other damage.

Derrick Mitchell will be a six-year minor league free agent should the Phils not add him to their 40-man roster. I would assume the Phils will be talking with him and letting him know they plan to move him up to Reading or what not in order to let him ‘remain’ a minor league fa until the Rule V draft has passed and then the Phils would sign him to a new minor league contract after the Rule V draft. That way they’d say a 40-man roster spot and he’d remain with the organization. The fact that he’s spent 6 years in the minors and has only his Clearwater kind of speaks to his progress in the system so if another team signs him I don’t think it’s a huge loss and I don’t think he’s worth wasting a 40-man roster spot on.
