Recap: The ‘Claws took it up several notches and had their best week of the year, going 6-2 (including the completion of a suspended game) and winning several games in improbable, comeback fashion, including a walkoff home run by Leandro Castro to end the suspended game in the bottom of the 14th. The ‘Claws pulled to within 2 games of first place Hickory in the SAL North.
Hitters: Good week all around for most of the touted guys. Several of the guys who had been struggling (Valle, James, Castro) had very good weeks and Singleton, well, it’s becoming pretty apparent that between Cosart and Singleton, the Phils will have two guys ranked pretty highly in all of the Top X Prospects lists going into next year.
- Jeremy Barnes: 10-29, 4 2B, 4 RBI
- Adam Buschini: 7-32, 1 3B, RBI, average is down to .249
- Leandro Castro: 10-34, 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 6 RBI
- Anthony Hewitt: 5-20, 2 3B, HR, 2 RBI, 7 K / 1 BB
- Jiwan James: 11-35, 4 2B, 3 RBI, SB/CS
- Domingo Santana: 3-16, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 8K / 1 BB
- Jonathan Singleton: 12-28, 7 2B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 5 K / 8 BB, SB
- Sebastian Valle: 6-23, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 BB
- Jonathan Villar: 9-33, 3 2B, 5 RBI, 4 SB, 3 E
Santana and Valle were kept out of Sunday’s lineup for showing up late to the park…Castro’s week has propelled him to the Top 10 in several offensive categories (8th in runs, 3rd in triples, 4th in RBI, and 9th in total bases). Other BlueClaws among the league leaders: James (T-3 in runs, T-10 in strikeouts), Buschini (9th in runs, T-6 in triples, T-10 in walks), Villar (T-8 in hits, 3rd in SB), Barnes (4th in BB, 8th in OBP), Santana (T-5 in walks, 1st in strikeouts) and Hewitt (4th in strikeouts)…Villar stole home on Sunday for the third time this year…his error Sunday brought him to 21 on the year.
Pitchers: Hot or cold week for the starters. Cosart threw a shutout (although his stats below are impacted by his start in the suspended game) and Julio Rodriguez had two nice starts. On the downside, Colby Shreve ran into his first subpar start of the year and Jonathan Pettibone’s return from the DL lasted only 1/3 of an inning on Sunday during which he gave up three bombs.
- Julio Rodriguez: 11 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 13 K / 4 BB, 2 wins
- Jarred Cosart: 10.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 8K / 1 BB
- Brody Colvin: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 5 K / 4 BB
- Colby Shreve: 6 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 7 K / 1 BB
- Matt Way: 7.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 K / 2 BB
- Jonathan Pettibone: 0.1 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 1 K / 1 BB, 3 HR
- Josh Zeid: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 7 K / 0 BB
- Ebelin Lugo: 7.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 6 K / 1 BB
Despite the poor results, Pettibone was reportedly throwing 94 in Sunday’s start…Nick Hernandez‘ MRI did not turn up anything fo concern, but it’s still unknown when he will return…’Claws among the league leaders: Hernandez (2nd in ERA, 1st in WHIP), Zeid (T-5 in saves), Colvin (T-4 in hit batters), Way (T-4 in strikeouts), and Cosart (T-7 in strikeouts, 4th in WHIP).
think Cosart being left off Allstar team is a mistake.
Congrats to all who will represent the Blue Claws!

I thought I saw on Blue Claws blog that Villar had 4 steals of home. Looked , they don’t have that up now, but they have All-Star game assignments. Villar starts at SS, also Barnes 2B, N. Hernandez, LHP, and Zeid, RHP.

Yesterday’s game story notes it was the third steal of home by Villar.

Nice job. Thanks for the report!
Lakewood seems like they are a really exciting team to watch.
As for Villar, are his steals of home straight steals or the back end of double steals? Either way, he looks like an exciting player. Plus, as a fan, you probably have a good chance of catching one of his throws if you sit on the first base side of the field.

Jeff O–from what I can tell, at least the last two have been straight steals. Thanks for the ‘nice job’.

Guys, it’s three steals of home and they have all been straight steals, one against a righty pitcher from the stretch, just caught the guy asleep at the wheel.
Sorry for the confusion…Greg

Valle with 2 homers tonight and 5 RBIs, he is continuing hitting well over the last 2 weeks or so

Went to the game tonight (my first time there and seeing these guys), singleton is built like a brick shit house, hits, great glove from what I saw and can steal. Valle’s two homers were awesome, I barely saw the 1st one as I was in line for food but his 2nd dinger was a thing of beauty. This being my first time seeing a single A game (let alone a low single a game) man is the pitching raw, so many hit batters, balls in the dirt and many passed balls. Overall a great experience and a very nice ball park to boot.

Big game last night, which was easy to miss due to the draft. Singleton 2-4, Valle 2 HRs, and Cosart with the win. The game story said Cosart gave up only 2 hits through the first 5 innings, then gave up the two runs in the sixth and that he hit 98 on the stadium gun. 98!!!
Jeremy, does that velocity reading sound right to you?

Based on the game notes the 2 hits in the 6th were of the broken bat variety.
Valle’s season resembles that of d’Arnaud’s last year. Really slow start but developed more power as the season progressed. Any review on his defense?

I can’t find Valle’s BABIP numbers for this year, but I remember d’Arnaud’s last year was extremely low and indicated that while his batting line didn’t look so great he was just really unlucky at first- eventually correcting during the course of the season.
I don’t have the numbers to support it, but I’m not entirely certain that the slow starts for both catchers are entirely comparable.

Valle is a very streaky hitter but is developing more pop. Not bad for someone who will turn only 20 late next month. Last year between Wpt and Lakewood he hit 7 homers in 349 at bats. In the Mexican Pacific league last Fall he hit 11 homers in 160 at bats but most of them came in the first half of his at bats there. Right now he has hit 5 homer in his last 33 at bats over 9 games and 6 total in 182 at bats. Enjoy his current streak. It will be interesting how to see how long it lasts.

was at game last night as well. He didn’t have his best stuff like I hve seen in the past. Couple broken bat hits is correct.
He seems to pitch better on five days rest than on six.
Singelton is raelly impressive.
