Wise Opts Out of Contract

A bit of breaking news that may spur some conversation.  Lehigh Valley OF DeWayne Wise has opted out of his contract, making him a free agent, and creating an opening in the Lehigh Valley outfield.  With a team desperate for offense and the possibility of a John Mayberry call up coming for road interleague games, could it be time for Domonic Brown in Lehigh Valley?  Brown has been very consistent at the plate during the course of his two partial seasons in Reading, however his defense still needs work.  That work can just as easily be accomplished in Lehigh Valley in my opinion. (ok, maybe I am desperate for something or someone of interest to watch at Coca Cola Park).

  1. The Phillies would be absolute idiots to allow the status of Dwayne Wise or any other minor league fill to have absolutely any bearing on Brown. He will get called up when they think he is ready (or needed in the bigs). Why in the world would they even consider moving him up because of a hole in the AAA lineup?

  2. Regardless of the reason, I’m of the opinion that it’s time to pull the trigger on Brown.

  3. I agree that he is ready. In fact, sometimes I think he might be getting a bit bored (I have no evidence to support this). I could be wrong. Either way, a new challenge can’t hurt.

  4. I agree and think Dom Brown can work on his defense in AAA. Also, I like the idea of him being challenged with more breaking pitches in AAA. He’s ready for finishing school!

If you actually took the time to read past the first sentence, my point was that Brown is ready for AAA in my opinion. There are plenty of Kevin Mahar’s and Mike Spidale’s to fill in as stop gaps if that is what is needed, however, Brown is ready and there is no good reason to hold back at this moment.

  6. One more point for comparison purposes:
    Brown in AA: 82 games 303 AB’s;
Michael Taylor in AA: 86 games, 316 AB’s.
Almost EXACTLY the same numbers when Taylor was deemed “ready” to move to AAA by the Phillies brass. Taylor, by the way, was quite successful last year in AAA Lehigh Valley.

  8. I’ll second that notion PP, he’s seeing better stuff pitchers at AA then he would see at AAA, if anyone gets called up for DH duties in IL play id like to see brown, though he would probably play left and have Ibanez DH. Plus maybe he could bring some spark to the big club with how they are playing right now.

  9. Brown is not ready for majors, defense is a major part of the majors and Brown’s needs work. The Phils a need good defense player and Brown is not there yet, no need to rush him.

  10. Cause occasionally he takes a retarded angle on higher velocity lower angle fly outs. Brown isn’t there yet, fielding wise.

  11. Ok so he will have a few errors but how many xtra basehits will he take away with his speed and arm. I would let him learn in Phillie. Plus he seem offensively already better then Ibanez.

  12. Trying to rush Brown to the majors would be a mistake. There is no need for it. There have been plenty of prospects with similar skills, that had comparable numbers at AA. Many of those players still struggled in the Majors and had to be sent back. When Brown is ready I do not want to see him go back. Let him get his ABs in the minors first.

  13. Can’t see them starting brown’s arbitration clock with a call up for interleague play. Only way that would make any sense would be if they think he will start in the majors next year

  14. Brown taken out of the game in the bottom of the 8th, replaced by Mahar, not sure why. I would say because they are losing 13-1 and Brown is having a rough nite but so had the whole team only 2 hits coming into the 8th

  15. It looks like just simple replacments as Stavisky was just sub’d into left for Spidale and Spidale was one of only a few hits tonite

  16. I wouldn’t put Brown past AAA before 2011. Is he ready for MLB? Maybe. But…

    1. No need to start Brown’s clock running now
    2. Ibanez is only halfway thru his contract
    3. Brown needs AB’s. If Brown goes to Philly, Ibanez sits and they would never be able to trade him (Ibanez), even at a discount (like they were willing to pay 1/2 of his contract in 2011 or something).

  17. PYW it was even harder to be there and watch it. The phillies have serious issues with pitching Reading has given up 27 runs in the past 2 games

  18. If you’re looking for the silver lining on Aumont, take heart that he settled down in the 4th and 5th innings. He gave up 2 HRs and 2 singles in the 1st. In the 2nd, 2 BBs, a single and a grand slam. In the 3rd, 2 singles and a BB to load the bases but he gets a key strike out and a flyout to end the threat. In the 4th, he goes 1 – 2 -3. In the 5th, he strands a leadoff double. I’m sure he’s on a pitch count right now so he’s out after 5 but he got it back on track. The bullpen gave up the other 8 runs.

If I’m Milacki, I sit him down and stress the last two innings. I talk about the first 3 as a learning event. Arm slot was bad and velocity waned, pitch selection, gave into a power hitter on the granny and whatever else went wrong.

  20. After the opting out by DeWayne Wise (thought the transactions on MiLB.com says he was released by the team) leaves an opening for a starter at AAA which Domonic Brown is best qualified to fill, so that is what they should do and it will not hurt his development in the least. He would go over Q. Berry, Spidale, Stavisky, and they could move Mahar to be another reserve at OF until Gillies is ready to come off DL. Don’t see a controversy as to who to call up. They would not need to add an OF from Cleawater with moving Mahar from IF to OF, but that move would leave them with 5 IF’s so they could call up Overbeck for 3B and slide Tagg Bozied from 3B to share 1B/DH with Rizzotti. So with the call-up for Domonic Brown to AAA and Overbeck to AA they can take care of some necessary housekeeping before the Upcoming Draft, no downside likely for these needed moves.

When there is an “opt out clause” in a contract, it reads that if the player advises that he opts out, he then must be released. We do get technical here dont we.

The information that Wise opted out came from the media relations director of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

  22. With Wise now gone (no loss), they could easily move Spidale back up to allow more playing time for Mahar. That seems more in line with their past actions than moving Brown up although I suspect he will get moved up later. Good to see Colvin do well again and great to see Hyatt take a positive step. He wasn’t great yesterday but he was much better than he’s been and he did have 7Ks in 5 innings. And great job by Zack Sterner who pitched a scoreless 9th on his way back from TJ surgery. As for Aumont, I think its time for the DL so they can send him to Florida to start over. I sure hope Gillies comes back soon….

  23. Moving Dom Brown to AAA would give him experience against plenty of veteran pitching, something he’s not really seeing at the AA level. Almost all top prospects see a nice chunk of ABs in AAA regardless of it being more of a turnstyle for AAAA level guys that might help the MLB club in emergency callups. He’s clearly dominating AA, they might as well move him up to give him plenty of ABs there.

  25. Horrid. At least Wise had pop. The Ironpigs now have three players in their regular lineup who are COMPLETE zeroes offensively.
