The injuries continue for the Phils, and the flavor of the day is Ryan Madson, who was placed on the DL with a broken toe, which was apparantly suffered AFTER his appearance on Wednesday. Antonio Bastardo was called up to Philadelphia without having unpacked his bags in Allentown, having been sent down just yesterday to make room for Brad Lidge.

Rumor is Madson blocked a shot in the third period…

While on the penalty kill.

Yes, an option has been used on Bastardo, but with that, he can be freely moved between Philly and Lehigh Valley all year.

After his appearance? More likely what did he kick in frustration?

Good for Bastardo. He didnt deserve to be sent down anyway. Now he does not have to settle for minor league pay for the next 2-3 weeks.

I’m guessing Bastardo will be back in Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. With Figeroa back to the bullpen they have 8 relievers and presumably will go with 7 when Blanton comes off the DL.

Jeffh – I think Bastardo will be up here until Madson comes off the DL, or perhaps longer if Herndon/Figeroa continue to prove to be ineffective.
I think in the short term, Kendrick is going back down on Tuesday.

KK didn’t exactly help himself today. He’s worthless as a starter and he has options…he should be gone.

Per Keith Law’s article
“If a player is sent out on one or more optional assignments during the course of a season, but the total number of days spent on those assignments is fewer than twenty, then he’s not charged with an option. So there.”

So, as of now, Bastardo has not used an option

Herndon ineffective? He’s had some really terrible starts, but everyone in our bullpen has. And going off last night, Herndon pitched two solid innings. No one else did.

Herndon had 2 bad appearances which were due to 3 infield singles and the other one was due to the fact that the ump must’ve put icy hot in his own eyes.
Also, I’m glad to see Lidge is back into form 🙂

Herndon has a great sinker and a hit or miss off speed pitch. He gets hurt when he can’t get anything but the sinker over for strikes. He should be working on this in AAA but the Rule 5 thing handicaps him. He seems like a good find though.

Since I don’t see it on here yet, might it be pointed out that Madson kicked a heavy metal chair, as told by the Philly.com blogs. Yeah, when Blanton’s back , he’s a starter, so that leaves Halladay, Hamels, Kendrick , Figueroa, and Moyer and Blanton, then. I say they continue to start Figueroa rather than Kendrick, and Kendrick has not proven he would add much to the bullpen, so they send Kendrick down for now, and Bastardo stays.

I think when Blanton comes back and Kendrick should start in LHV. I would like to see the Phils work out a deal with the Angels and have Herndon pitch in AAA. I see some potential in Herndon. Bastardo may only remain till Madson comes back. It was a bad month for the Phils bullpen. The minors had some good relievers with Mathieson in AAA and an ERA 0.84…Schwimmer at REA under 1 as well…DeFratus CLW with 3 saves and Zeid at LKWD with 3 saves and 0 ERA in 15 innings

Schwimer has pitched pretty well at Reading…most importantly, his peripherals have held up so far despite going up a level. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him up in Lehigh at some point and as a Sept cup of coffee guy if he keeps it up. His walk rate is still acceptable at 3.7 and his K rate is still very high showing his stuff works against more advanced hitters. At 24, he’s not too too old for AA.

Last year in Lehigh Valley and this year in Clearwater, KK was looking good. He appeared to have gained confidence and some new pitches and was looking as if he could really make it as a successful starter in Philly. Unfortunately, this appears to not be happening…..I think a trade would be the best option for him. Maybe with a new team and new enviornment, he could re-establish himself

I feel like a prick for jinxing Schwimer. Sorry man, I should have kept my mouth shut.

Not sure why Mathieson is not the guy called up
Just looked at his stats in AAA and he is dominating
Love to see a high 90s guy come out of the pen!
