Week In Review: Monday–The final game against Scranton was rained out and will be made up as part of a double header in July.

Tuesday–Lehigh Valley opened a four game series in Rochester Tuesday evening with Nate Bump on the hill, coming off consecutive very good outings.  Lehigh Valley scored first on a Cody Ransom RBI single in the first, however, Rochester quickly matched them, and the game went to the 2nd, tied at 1.  The ‘Pigs scored two more in the 2nd, on consecutive RBI doubles by Chris Duffy and Rich Thompson , making it 3-1.  Rochester chipped away with a run in the 5th, and Nate Bump (3-0) exited, having gone 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits.  He walked 2 and struck out 1.  A Chris Duffy sac fly and Rich Thompson RBI single extended the ‘Pigs advantage to 5-2 in the 6th inning. Both teams addeded another run apiece, making it a 6-3 final. Scott Mathieson pitched a scoreless, hitless 9th, striking out 2 to earn his second save. Dane Sardinha had a big game going 3-3 at the plate, while Ransom, Thompson, and Maza, all added two hits apiece.

Wednesday–The ‘Pigs problems in one run games continued on Wednesday in their 5-4 loss to Rochester.  After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, Joe Savery fell into a fairly typical Joe Savery performance, going 5 innings and giving up 3 runs on 7 hits.  He walked 4 and struck out 3, throwing 59 of his 95 pitches for strikes.  After Lehigh Valley tied the score at 3 in the 6th on a Melvin Dorta sac fly, Rochester quickly came back to take another one run lead.  Dorta answered again in the 8th, tying the game on an RBI single, but the struggling Jason Anderson (0-3) quickly gave up back to back doubles, with Rochester taking the lead they did not relinquish.  DeWayne Wise had a big night going 3-4 with a run scored and a triple.

‘Pigs Prospects:ANdrew Carpenter– His last start was abbreviated, as he was on a pitch count due to the possibility he may be needed in Philly, but with that being said, he did not look good, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings of work, allowing 6 hits.  Carpenter, through the early going is striking out 2.4 per nine innings of work, while righties are strangely hitting above .375 against him.  In his last 9 International league starts dating back to last season, he is 3-6 with a 5.77 ERA, with the opposition hitting .333 against him.  Not pretty.

John Mayberry– A bit of an off week for Mayberry who hit .188 (3-16) on the week with a homer and 3 RBI’s.  On the year: .286/.358/.486 with 2 HR 13 RBI and one SB. Hitting .188 vs. LHP; .315 vs. RHP and .261 with RISP.

Scott Mathieson continues pitching very well, earning his second save of the season this week.  In his 7 games, he has thrown 9.2 innings, yielding 5 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 9.  ERA stands at 0.93.  WHIP: 0.93

Joe Savery has not pitched well, continuing his command problems and working in fairly consistent trouble.  Thus far: 3 starts, 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA; 15IP 19H 9BB 9K, 3 homers allowed; 1.86 WHIP. Opposition hitting .311.

Probables: Tonight: Carpenter, Friday: Mazone; Saturday: Vogelsong; Sunday: Bump

Notes:–Lehigh Valley have blown leads in 8 of their 11 losses.

–Strange: Despite their 8-11 record, the ‘Pigs are 3rd in the league in batting average and 4th in ERA.

Melvin Dorta has hit safely in all 7 of his games.

Mike Zagurski has stranded his last 8 inherited runners and stranded the bases loaded twice. In his last 6 games, Zagurski is 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 7K’s in 5.1 innings.

–Traditionally a slow starter, Andy Tracy is hitting just .206 out of his cleanup position thus far.

  1. Nice rebound for Carpenter not that it matters since he doesn’t seem to be visible to the Phils. It must be torture to live on the edge of the majors and not get a chance.
The Lidge soap opera continues. Very interesting especially for Schwim.

  2. Bastardo is going to take some innings from Mathieson & Zagurski. Maybe more Zags than Mathieson. It’s a shame because these two guys need all the innings they can get.

Does Bump have big league stuff? He last pitched in the bigs for the Marlins in 2008. In 2009, he pitched in Toledo and in the Independent leagues. He was 15 – 3 last year. Is he this year’s Rodrigo Lopez or is he just a decent AAAA guy that will never get called up again?
