With the upcoming activation of Brad Lidge on Friday prior to the Phils game against the Mets, the Phillies have announced their intention to send LH reliever Antonio Bastardo back down to the Minors, presumably to Lehigh Valley. Bastardo, 24, has been used sparingly by the Phils but has pitched fairly well yielding an ERA of just 1.69 through 7 appearances. The Phils hands are tied a bit as if they attempt to send David Herndon down, he would first have to be offered back to the Angels, from whom he came in the Rule 5 draft. Additionally, Nelson Figueroa would have to clear waivers before being sent down as has pitched well in his opportunities thus far. More decisions to be made with the activation of Joe Blanton presumably coming soon (Monday?)

Dxd013, yes they can be traded to another team. That team would acquire the same Rule 5 conditions of course.

I agreeon Kendrick as well. I prefer figgy in long relief.

Hopefully Bastardo looks at this as an opportunity to get regular work in, works on his slider and stays motivated. He’ll be back in the Majors at some point soon and everyone knows he’s a legit MLB reliever. Its just a tough numbers game at the moment. He hasn’t done anything at all to “earn” this demotion.
Which is the complete opposite of KK when he gets sent down in a couple days.

Reportedly 89-91…per Mike Drago of the Reading Times (?)

I was at the game and the highest I saw from Lidge was 89. I did talk to some people in the organization and they felt the gum was reading 3-4 mph low.

Lidge looked great in Reading. And I agree with what Ken said that the gun was slow. Strasburg was only at about 96 yet reports had him at 97-100.
Blanton on the other hand was just awful. He is no where near ready to pitch effectively in the majors.

With Herndon, not only does he have to be offered back to the Angels, but all other teams in baseball would have a shot at him prior to them being able to send him to the minors.

It’s bad on Bastardo – he was our only effective lefty reliever. Obviously, he’s going to be back at some point soon and I think he could have a nice career ahead of him. His stuff is objectively difficult to hit.

Interesting checking some of the unsign draft choices, cant find any so far that are doing that well beside workman, and I heard his stock is going down.

I vote for optioning Kendrick as opposed to returning Herndon. I just don’t think that Kendrick has a good enough secondary to be successful in any role in the majors, whereas Herndon could be useful if used in the proper situations .

we need to face reality. there is no doubt, moyer is the least valuable pitcher on the staff. we need to eat the millions and do whats best for the team.

How is Moyer less valuable than KK? KK hasn’t even made it out of the 2nd in half his starts so far.
