  1. Drove up to LV and got to seeMathieson the other night and see he put up another 0 tonight.
So far 7ip out of the bullpen and read he was lights out last year in Reading and the Arizona Fall League. When I saw him his slider was outstanding with late break, fastball 93-99 but electric. What are the plans for this guy?
Saw Amount tonight and to be honest was dissapointed. He had his best outing but looks awkward, hard time repeating pitches, and velocity was 92 tops. Has a slurvy cb but the guy is huge. Gillies had a good night and can flat out fly. Needs to work on plate discipine as he hacked at a pitch a foot over his head. Also layed down a great bunt for a base hit.

  2. lakewood’s collective line was 9IP, 5H, 2BB, 17K

cosart, of course, with the biggest part in that: 6IP, 3H, 1BB, 10K

  3. A big night for the organization, and Dom Brown didn’t even play. Schwim with an excellent outing tonight. Keep it up!

  4. Such is the life of an organization blessed with toolsy guys; there will be peaks and valleys until guys figure things out. Cosart appears to have figured some things out and looks to be a future ace. As far as Gillies, Aumont, Hewitt, James, etc. one night they look great, the next night they don’t. The key is patience. They have the ability to play at the highest level. Whether they show their tools consistently is the question. But it is fun to watch.

  5. I am impressed that Aumont, after changing his delivery and being switched to a starter, can show postive results at AA so quickly. Five inninings, 5 Ks, 0 BBs and 1 ER. Good game.

  6. Plans for Mathieson? My guess is that they’ll groom for the set-up role with the hope that, in a few years, he can become the closer. In other words, big plans. But they don’t want to rush him or risk another injury. They will be extremely cautious with him, but if he keeps dominating, at some point this year (and that point may be August or September) he will be up.

  7. I’m still trying not to make value judgments with Aumont. He’s re-learning his old delivery AND trying to adjust to being a starter. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if they told him not to throw as hard as he can but, rather, get used to his old arm slot and learn to command pitches again. In other words, he may intentionally be holding back the hard stuff and, if you look at his summer league numbers (his velocity was routinely in the mid to high 90s – really awesome speed), I think this is probably what’s going on as there’s no reason to believe he’s lost that much arm speed.

I like that Aumont seems to be making real progress right now – he’s in learning mode. To me, Aumont is the one guy who could benefit most from seeing Roy Halladay prepare. They are very similar pitchers in terms of size, velocity and even make-up (Aumont is incredibly competitive – which is a good thing).

  8. Lastly – another great start for Hyatt. If this keeps up for a few more weeks, they need to promote him to really see what they’ve got in this fellow – his A+ numbers are phenomenal. My view is this – promote Hyatt and demote Worley, who seems to be going backwards.

  9. There is no doubt Aumont is holding back on his velocity. He sat at 89-92 all game, but touched 96 on a batter in the middle of his outing. He still has the velocity if he needs it. He is learning how to pitch, at a young age, at AA. If he is repeating his delivery, everyone should be happy.

  10. Being from Canada, I’ll bet that Aumont has played far less than the typical american 22 yr old. He has lots of raw talent. If he continues to work hard, who knows how good he could be. Cosart of course is really pitching well as is Hyatt (not to mention Hernandez and May). Lots of guys are doing well but I’m very encouraged by Gillies’ last two games. Matheson still hasn’t pitched on back to back days I don’t think. This will be a requirement of him before he gets consdered for a call up later in the season but there’s no rush. Unrelated: I didn’t realize it, although I assume others did, that the Phillies heavily scouted Halladay in high school but still chose Reggie Taylor over him in the draft (Halladay went 3 picks later). Ouch!

  11. Somebody said that Strasbourg would pitch for Harrisburg against Reading on Wednesday. If so, that would be 10:30 AM in Harrisburg, so there may be some space with that start time.

Susdorf seems to have came on all of a sudden in HI-A, hitting around .361 with 9 walks, for a OPS in excess of 1 point something. IF they move him up to Reading, where, lately they have used the minor league vets; Stavisky at 1B, Mahar in LF, and Bozied when there is DH, that might stir some change up top. CLW could fill Susdorf’s spot by current players D’Arby Myers, Derrick Mitchell , and Brian Gump, so that should hold down the clamor to rush one of the younger OF’s up from Lakewood. Or if need be for a CLW OF, they could call up Batts, or if still in XST, Dabbs to fill reserve roll. But then maybe they don’t make any moves until June draft.

LKW- Hewitt may be at start of a mini-lull here for a bit,or not.
Jeremy Barnes lulled for a few games here, Batting Average dropped a bit. Buschini does not seem to have hit much , but has taken some walks to keep some overall averages not so bad. Ruf also has and has maintained hitting well, so far.

  12. After the first three starts of the season it’s good to see Hyatt leading the Florida State League and Cosart leading the South Atlantic League in strike outs.

  13. I am not that excited about Austin Hyatt yet. He is a fully grow’d up man playing in A ball. He has outstanding numbers, but he is 24 years old. Two years older than JC Ramirez, and almost four years older than May. He is doing what he should against younger players.

  14. Cosart seems to just need innings, looks like he could be a ace, wonder if they will limit his movement to higher levels.

  15. “I am not that excited about Austin Hyatt yet. He is a fully grow’d up man playing in A ball. ”

True and I made the same point earlier. However, he can only do his job – he doesn’t pick the league he’s pitching in – the team does that. Whatever we think his ceiling may be, he certainly is doing an impressive job – good enough for us to get excited about. That having been said, I’ve yet to see any personal or published reports about his stuff – can anyone comment on what/how Hyatt throws? We seem to know a lot more about Nick Hernandez than we do about Hyatt, which is a bit bizarre given that Hyatt is at a higher level (maybe it’s because his uncle isn’t an MLB umpire).

  16. mikemike, Cosart doesn’t have a lot of innings over the past couple of years, so they will likely limit him just like they did with Drabek last year. That does not preclude a promotion, but my guess is it wouldn’t happen for a few months.

  18. Trevor May . . . rules.

How much you wanna bet that he ends the year as a more highly rated prospect than Drabek?

    I love it!!!

  19. You know . . . . maybe that whole “Drabek is untouchable” stuff that was going on last summer and into the fall was a huge set up. Maybe they knew all along that their other top righty prospects (Cosart and May) were as good, or better prospects. It’s certainly possible, although, frankly, nobody could guess that Cosart would be quite this good (May, at least, had some track record).

  20. I’ll wait another few starts, but my view is that we probably need to start modifying the way we look at Trevor May. My sense is that we are dealing with a truly extraordinary prospect – our first elite pitching prospect since Cole Hamels. May still needs to master his command, but the strikeouts indicate the ability to dominate and to roll through the minor leagues. It’s all very encouraging, particularly since I think that Cosart may be every bit the prospect that May is and, perhaps, more. You have to salute the people in the system who are drafting and developing these players – the rate at which prospects are being cultivated in this system is staggering – we dump numerous quality prospects over a 3 year period and there’s barely a hiccup.

That having been said, let me be clear – I WANT TO SEE SOME OF THESE PLAYERS ACTUALLY PLAY FOR THE PHILLIES. I understand that many of them will not, but if May is the type of player I think he is, dammit, I want to see him at CBP, not at Miller Field!

  21. Where are all the Austin Hyatt haters now? When we did the top 30 no one would give him any credit for the numbers he put up . Its early but he is off to a great start in Clearwater

  22. So is Shreve actually healthy now? If so do they wait and put him in Williamsport or will they put him in Lakewood like May last year? Maybe they are just trying to limit his innings by starting him late.

I figure once Way puts some quality starts together, he will be promoted to Clearwater. It still amazes me that he is still in Lakewood. He arguably was as good as May in Lakewood last year.

When the first starter moves up from Lakewood, does Shreve slide into the rotation?

  23. may with anther great outing, as long as he keeps the walks to a minimum it seems it will be pretty hard for anyone to score off him in the FSL this year

  24. The team’s decision to keep Way in Lakewood makes sense in retrospect – he has not been as dominant as he was last year. You can’t equate Way to May as prospects (as much as their rhyming names may tempt you to do so) – Way is a college lefty with fringy stuff. May is a hard-throwing high right-hander with dominant-type stuff. May is a great prospect with an enormous upside. Way is a nice prospect who may, one day, be a LOOGY or a 4th or 5th stater. As prospects, May and Way are, to continue the rhyming, like night and day.

  25. On Hyatt, let’s all wait a second before putting the guy down. First, he just got out of college last year. He went to the NYP league and ripped it up – 0.66 ERA in 50 innings with over 80 strikeouts – please explain to me how he could of played better. He then skipped Lakewood entirely (he pitched 4 innings there last year – that doesn’t count), and went to Clearwater this year, where he has been outstanding. Sure, he’s not in AA (not his fault), so we don’t know for sure what we’ve got, but there’s no basis to be down on the guy or not be at least a little excited.

  26. I agree with catch 22… His numbers are his numbers …get excited about that . I’m sure there are guys that are 22- 23 years old in high A ball that don’t have these results. What will you say if he gets to Reading and puts up good numbers ….will he still be too old @ 24 ?

Compare his numbers to some of the guys you put ahead of him in your top 30.

  27. How long till Hyatt is in Reading? They need to promote him fairly quickly if they want to move him through the system.

Is there even room in Reading for him right now? There’s also JC Ramirez to consider as I’m sure they’ll want to push him to Reading this year too. I’m guessing that Cisco, Worley and Naylor are gonna start feeling some pressure to do something soon.

  28. Does anyone know of somewhere to get reports/box scores/info from extended spring training? There are several players down there whose development I’m interested to get a read on.

  29. fyi – to answer one of my own questions, I just received an e-mail from Kevin Czerwinski (Phillies Pharm update on Comastsportsnet) saying that reports are that May is consistently in the low to mid-90s with his FB. This makes sense, it’s hard to strike out that many batters as a righty unless you either throw that hard or have a ridiculous out pitch (splitter, screwball, etc. . . . ) and I hadn’t heard that May throws any particular out pitch.

  30. I wasn’t comparing way and may as prospects. Just that they both performed exceptionally at lakewood last year. May has amazing talent but is probably more of a raw thrower than a complete pitcher where way is more of a pitcher as he has great control and a good change. His stuff obviously is not as electric but my point was that based on his 09 stats he was more than deserving of a promotion to clearwater. He must have had a poor ST.

Does anyone think may could make it to reading this year? I say no unless he limits the walks. History shows this organization won’t be very aggressive with their 20 year old pitchers.

  31. Not sure the Phillies are holding back Shreve just for the sake of limiting his innings. I seem to recall him getting bad results in spring training. Maybe they do not think he is ready for the full season levels.
In regard to Hyatt, I will get excited by him when he performs at AA. He was old for his level last year and he is old for his level this year. Worely and Stutes dominated in the lower levels at a younger age than Hyatt. Now they are considered fringe prospects. For me, Hyatt should not be rated higher than either of those guys or Cisco, for that matter.
As far as moving up pitchers, I am more interested in whether Ramirez moves up to AA than Hyatt.

    Just kidding… kinda.

  34. Yeah, I get why you’re not excited, but there are a few differences. First, I think Hyatt was more dominant than both of those guys, although Stutes did great and I always thought (and still do), that he’s going to be a legitimate big league pitcher. Second, NEITHER STUTES NOR WORLEY PLAYED AT CLEARWATER. Those guys dominated at Lakewood – there’s a definite jump in quality from low A ball to A+ ball. Hyatt has made that jump and is doing great. Look, I’m tempering my excitement too, but he’s showing us something now.

Unrelated to Phillies prospects, Aroldis Chapman is on track to start Tuesday in Scranton.

  36. Gillies got bang up a little Monday night trying to make a shoe string catch in center. Looked like the ball hit him in the upper leg area as he smothered it to keep it from getting by him. He was crouched over in centerfield for several minutes but stayed in the game. He had enough left to blast a homer in his next at bat. Tonight before the game he worked out in outfield fielding practice, looked good from what I could see and was on the starting lineup board. The public address announcer even introduced him to lead off the game but it was Spidale instead standing in the batters box. Guess they want him to be ready take some swings against Strasburg in the getaway game Wednesday morning.
