Rollins to DL, Valdez Called Up

As expected, Jimmy Rollins was placed on the 15 day DL today with what is being described as a calf strain.  It was estimated that Rollins would miss anywhere from 2-4 weeks with the injury. Wilson Valdez was called up from Lehigh Valley to take Rollins spot on the active roster.  Valdez did have to be moved onto the 40 man roster, and the Phils now stand at the full compliment of 40. The 32 year old Valdez has spent parts of 4 seasons in the majors and is a career .222 hitter in the majors in 369 plate appearances.  Valdez, a career .299 hitter in AAA, saw some time with the Mets last season when Jose Reyes went down with his myriad of injuries.  He plays primarily SS, but can play 2B as well. Valdez started off the season very hot for Lehigh Valley hitting .455 in his 22 at bats.  Look for additional Minor League transactions today here if they become available.

  1. I hope I am wrong, but I get the feeling we got bad news today… T May left his game early in the top of the third inning after facing 10 batters. He struck out 4, 1 WP and walked 4. I hope it is just Precautionary.

  2. I would have preferred they called Brian Bocock since Valdez has no more option and will have to clear waivers when he is ultimately designated for assignment. In addition I am sure they will need someone like Valdez later on this season and using him now seems like a real waste.

  4. Maybe they see it as a Valdez audition. Let him and Castro play more. Keep the one they like better.

  5. What team is going to claim Valdez when he is sent back down? And even if they do, the next time Rollins gets hurt, they will call up Bocock. What is the difference? Why bring up the lesser player now? We don’t know if the need will be there later.

  6. Valdez has been good for the spring and early season – so yes he should be called up even if we lose him after 2-4 weeks. Those 2-4 weeks could be key for this team. So bring up the best option now. I guess Werth’s injury is not serious enough for a DL trip so that is good

  7. Re May, tweeted to James (sorry for the out of topic post):

Threshers @phuturephillies Pitches thrown, had a deep count on nearly every hitter and struggled with control.

  8. Agree with Diamond Derby, Valdez may stay instead of Castro when Rollins is ready to return.
Who would want either Castro or Valdez if DFA?

Does Ransom move to SS at LHV and Sellers to 3B?

  9. Something extraordinary would have to happen for Castro to be the odd man out. The Phillies like very experienced players on the bench and utility players who can play middle infield positions and just about anywhere else. Castro can do play everywhere and he’s got major league experience, so I think he stays. For crying out loud they hung on “no hit” Brunlett for two years (the single worst major league hitter last year that I have ever seen – seriously, he wasn’t even a below average AA hitter last year – he totally, complete and utterly sucked), so I don’t think Juan Castro’s job is in jeopardy.

  10. Catch 22, agree with your premises (Phils reward experience, a la Castro) and your conclusion may be correct too (they will keep him).

But Phils have also shown signs of rewarding performance more lately and being a tad more objective vs. traditional/sentimental. If they see Valdez as a much better hitter and good enough to play SS for a few weeks, there might be a competition in their minds, at least some exploratory discussion of that decision point.

  11. Also, Castro makes $700K. Valdez would make $400K minimum at least, maybe more with a little service time or if a split contract has named a higher figure for MLB service. So there is not much difference in salary and therefore little incentive to keep the lesser one over a clearly better one.

That said, the experience, especially playoff experience, could be the deciding factor. I will be interested to see if they split the work at SS these next two weeks.
