  1. IN Lakewood, Buschini is now a 3B, Schoenberger a utility guy. Batts is RH and could play 3B as well as first.

What is Kennelly doing in CLW? Myers pushed down, too. Susdorf too??!!?

What is Brummett doing in CLW? Brummett???

Rotation Brummett, May, Hyatt, Ramirez, Sanchez? Correa next in line?

  2. Well, Edgar Garcia must have stunk it up in spring training. They’re making him repeat High A after he already passed that test 2 years ago. Can not believe that there are 10 pitchers at Reading better than Garcia.
I would like to see JC Ramirez dominate High A for 2 months, then get promoted to AA.

  3. Lakewood has six starters (Way, Cosart, Colvin, Hernandez, Zeid, and Pettibone) so they’ll either go with six or move one to the bullpen. Massingham will likely be the closer. Its a very good team and should be a real treat for us to follow. Clearwater with May, Ramirez, Sanchez, Hyatt and ?? (four choices) should have a good rotation too but they might struggle to score runs.

  6. Lakewood also has an odd scheduling quirk in that they don’t play any five game series until June. This should protect a young 5 man rotation very well. I guess Shreve will stay in Florida for awhile. Does anyone have a list of the cuts? I’m curious as to who was cut vs kept in Florida. Thanks

  7. Geez,
I missed that. He must have been an awful hitter to have seen the writing on the wall so soon.

  8. Disapointed that Shreve still has not reached full season ball. Maybe starting him in extended spring is their way of controling his innings pitched.
Do not agree that Clearwater will have trouble scoring runs. Though guys like D’arby Myers, Gump and Hanzawa can not hit, the lineup has a number of players who belong in AA or are kind of old for the level. Tim Kennely, Susdorf and Matt Rizotti will probably all have .900 OPS at that level. Combined with Overbebeck and Naughton repeating the level, they will score runs.
The position players outside of Gose and Myers are all around 24 years old.

  9. Mike77…what makes you say “D’Arby Myers, Gump and Hanzawa can not hit?” Gump hit .292 in 47 games in his first season as a pro. He was hitting well this spring, well enough to jump him to High-A in his first full season (though he is a college guy). Saying he can not hit is just flat-out wrong.

  10. At Lakewood, I got Ruf at 1B, Barnes at 2B, Villar at SS, and Buschini at 3B as Starters with Schoenberger INF , and Batts can play 1B, 2B, 3B and OF.
Lakewood pitchers I had for there not seen: Colby Shreve, *Kevin Angelle, Julio Rodriguez, Ebelin Lugo, Mauricio Romero, Justin Beal, Mikael Bolsenbroek. Maybe except Romero, they go to XST.
At Clearwater, *Korby Mintken played mostly 2B and LF, but started as SS , so I got IF-OF for his position.
At DH, could be *Rizzotti, *Susdorf, *Gump, or Mitchell, from time to time.
Don’t see Julian Sampson as Pitcher.

  11. Looks like Domingo Santana will start in RF for Lakewood for their youngest player ever. Jiwan James in CF, Hewitt in LF, with Leandro Castro as DH and spelling all the OF positions.

  12. Here’s what I got for Extended Spring Training: They will occasionally split into a Williamsport and GCL teams and play Instructional League type games. I project out the candidates for The Short Season Squads for XST and to be reduced later and the Coming Draftees added, like this:
    Williamsport Candidates:
INF- *Jon Singleton, 1B, #Cesar Hernandez, 2B, # Edgar Duran SS, Luis Paulino 3B, *Matthew McConnell 2B-3B
OF- #Kelly Dugan LF, Kyrell Hudson CF, Aaron Altherr RF, Miguel Alvarez OF, *Michael Dabbs OF, Fabio Murakami OF
C- *Marlon Mitchell, # Francisco Diaz
SP- *Kevin Angelle, Colby Shreve, Julio Rodriguez, Juan Sosa, Stephen Inch
RP-Chase Johnson, Justin Beal, Mauricio Romero, Ebelin Lugo, Mikael Bolsenbroek
Seems like a promising team even before the draft.

    GCL Candidates:

INF- *Ryan Bollinger 1B, Geancarlo Mendez 2B, Carlos Perdomo SS, Maikol Franco 3B, Luis Unda 1B-OF
OF- Winder Torres LF, Bernardo Solarte CF, Rudney Balentien RF
    C- Marco Davalillo, *Ryan Gugel
SP- *Ryan Sasaki, Lisalverto Bonilla, Felix Cespedes, Miguel Nunez, *Lino Marinez
RP- Colin Kleven, *Ervis Manzanillo, Juary Gomez

  13. They list Keoni DeRenne as a coach at Lakewood, and they say he will be a player-coach for the season in the roster preview.

  14. Philsfan, I may have prematurely concluded that Gump can not hit because he hit only .200 with a OPS of .517 at Lakewood last year as a 22 year old. The sample size is small though, so I am probably jumping to conclusions. His numbers in the GCL are meaningless to me. He was 22 playing against 18 year olds.
I believe Gump is in Clearwater only until Leandro Castro proves he can hit at Lakewood.

  15. I agree that Castro will only be in Lakewood until Collier can play, if Castro hits at Lakewood. However, I think Gump can hit and I don’t think he will be the casualty. As for Clearwater scoring runs, I certainly hope they do. Kennelly hit well when he was there last year, but he hasn’t combined hitting and catching yet, and Rizzotti can hit. I’m not sold on Overbeck but I would love it if D’Arby and Gump both hit behind Gose who should improve his OBP this year. Good pitching should allow them to be a good team but I’m really excited to see Lakewood play.

  16. Really pumped that Santana is in Lakewood. Also encouraged about Hewitt playing well in spring training. Looking forward to the boxscores and everyone’s input.

  17. I’ll admit it: I’m a bit puzzled as to why Santana’s in Lakewood, while Singleton’s staying in extended spring training. At just 17 years old and with some pretty pronounced contact issues, it’s a big risk to send Santana to full season ball, especially in an outfield where all five guys should be getting regular at bats. Singleton, on the other hand, has been the subject of some positive spring training reports, and it seems to me that he has little to gain from staying in extended and heading to short season ball.

Also, why in God’s name is Way in Lakewood? A 1.61 FIP in 40 innings last year, from a 4-year college player no less, isn’t enough to convince people that he’s ready for High-A?

  19. Apparently, the Blue Claws beat the Threshers yesterday pretty good in a scrimmage. Yes, lots of talent there….

  20. The rumor floating about on Singleton is that the team feels he needs to work on his defense, so that’s why he’s staying in XST.

  21. Friar,

I don’t think it’s a huge risk to have Santana in full season ball. I think it will be a great experience for him, pass or fail. Sebastian Valle failed pretty miserably at Lakewood early last year and I think he was better for the experience. He went and did very well at Williamsport and in winter ball. I’m anxious to see him in Lakewood this year. I can see a similar path for Santana if he doesn’t excel at Lakewood. They know a lot more of his character than we do, so I would think that they feel he could handle the potential worst case scenario and learn from it.

  22. I only see 4 OF’s on the Lakewood Roster, and Collier won’t be back for awhile. Also one of them can DH so they can all play every day. It looked like Santana was one of the top guys and one of the top power guys from the summaries I have seen. They are not looking for someone to bump up to Clearwater, I say, because they can start Gose, D’Arby Myers, and Susdorf and they don’t need to advance one of their promising Lakewood players for them to sit on the bench.

  23. When Collier is ready to go, he’ll play mostly every day and that will take at bats away from someone. It will obviously depend on how various guys perform over the first month because Collier won’t be back before mid to late May as they’ll leave him in Florida for awhile to get some at bats, since he missed all of ST, after he’s ready to start playing which he isn’t yet.

  24. I could not be more excited about tracking Lakewood this year!

I’m unlcear on the rotation for CLW. May, Ramirez, Hyatt, Sanchez and Garcia? No Correa or Brummett? I read elsewhere that Cloyd and Velasquez are in the pen. That team is full of potential starters (although only two are top-tier).

I hope they find a way to keep Cosart’s and Colvin’s innings down, as those guys didn’t pitch all that much last year. I’d like to see them do some piggybacking (perhaps with Zeid) but that seems unlikely, at least at the beginning of the season, due to their schedule.

I bet Santana would not have made LAK if Collier were healthy. He’s the most likely to move down to the NYPL unless he’s absolutely tearing it up.

    Like

  25. Collier did not pass NYPenn, he is not guaranteed to replace Santana at Lakewood. Collier did not hit at two levels last year, plus he has an arm injury that directly impacts hitting. If anything he has to prove he is better than Kelly Dugan, once Castro is moved up to Clearwater, or IF Santana is demoted.

    Like

  26. mike77, you’re right that there are no guarantees, but since Collier is on the Lakewood roster I kind of doubt he will go back to the NYPL for anything but a tune-up once he’s healthy.

    Like

  27. Well, next to Collier’s name on the roster , you will see the designation, DL. Even in MLB, guys injured for a time will go to a lower level for training. Or before that to XST for a time. That really should not matter , because I don’t see Collier is as promising as the 4 OF’s they have now. They are all placed where they should be age and experience wise and it is to be hoped they stay at LKW for the duration of the season, with sucess for future advancement. Collier , may be turning into a spare part, maybe he can be palmed off on another organization in a mid-season trade for Jack Taschner, or somebody.

  28. Very interesting – mostly positive. Did not like Collier’s comments about being lazy last year upon making it to Lakewood (are you kidding me?) – usually that’s the beginning of the end, but he was young, so we’ll see. People do grow up.

  29. I wouldn’t put too much credence in anything these players say, ever. Players are always looking for an excuse for poor performance other than “I’m not good enough” That way there’s always some adjustment to their mechanics, some change to their preparation or workout regimen they can make and succeed.

    Like

  30. It will be interesting to see if Hewitt can make the necessary adjustments. He’s now had enough time to “catch up” to the other guys and actually did show a lot of improvement last year (he had a long way to go). This year, I think, will show us if there’s some legit upside there.

  31. James’s story is interesting – I can’t believe how close he was to going to college!

Marfis: Wait, you mean Collier’s on the DL? I wish I had known that before I wrote my previous posts, I retract everything I said.

Give me a break. Of course Collier will rehab somewhere before jumping back into Lakewood, but when he is ready he will play most of the season at Lakewood. If you didn’t believe it before, the APP article confirms it. Santana is not “placed where they should be age and experience wise” he is the youngest player in the history of the Lakewood organization. He might have the *talent* to be there, but not the age or experience. I still think Santana wouldn’t be there if Collier were healthy.

I’m not sure which is more likely, Santana gets sent down when Collier is healthy or one of Hewitt, James or Castro gets promoted. It will probably all depend on performance.

  32. KLaw chat tidbit:

    “Klaw (1:26 PM)
Bud in Manasquan: I’m not really sure what you’re asking, but if you live near Lakewood, go see them when Jarred Cosart pitches. Apparently he’s added a lot of velocity – I just heard he held 95-96 in a late-March start – and he might be the second-best prospect in that system all of a sudden.”
I would like to go on record as being in favor of Jarred Cosart suddenly becoming awesome.”

Not too shabby, eh? (grabbed from the comments on BLer)

8:27: Another 1-2-3 for Cosart. 16 hitters, two three-ball counts, six strikeouts, no walks.

8:40: Domingo Santana scalds a double to right-center. Anthony Hewitt a 2-run home run to dead center. 9-0 bottom 6.”
