Reading Roster Announced

Just a bit ago the Reading Phillies roster was announced.

Catchers: Tuffy Gosewisch, Kevin Nelson

Infielders: Tagg Bozied, Ozzie Chavez, Melvin Dorta, Freddy Galvis, Kevin Mahar, Brandon Pinckney

Outfielders: Quintin Berry, Domonic Brown, Tyson Gillies, Mike SPidale

SP: Phillipe Aumont, Mike Cisco, Yohan FLande, Drew Naylor, Vance Worley

RP: Chance Chapman, Sergio Escalona, Sergio Escalona, Matt German,  BJ Rosenberg, Michael Schwimer, Jason Stephens, Mike Stutes.

Note: The pitcher breakdown into starter and reliever was done by me.  There has been no official announcement that I know of as to what the actual rotation would be, however this is the best guess, based on the roster as of the moment.

Update: An outstanding source (James) has Naylor in the rotation rather then Stutes.  Adjustment made.

  1. Tagg Bozied has been at AAA for like 5 years now. Plus he has hit at that level. Why would he accept being placed at AA now?
Expected some prospects to be jumped to AA, like Murphy or Harold Garcia.
Would like to know what the thinking was behind starting JC Ramirez at AA. I am suprised, because I guessed Aumont would be placed at A ball instead of Ramirez, because he is overhauling his delivery.

  2. Looks like Kennelly and Susdorf (who both finished at AA last year) get demoted to High A. Rizzotti repeating High A again too I guess.

  3. I wouldnt expect Reading to carry 13 pitchers for long…I would look for them to add another OF..probably Susdorf back into the mix once things shake out a bit.

  4. Not a lot of guys to get excited about in the IF, but as a whole, I’m pretty happy with this team. Rotation could be shaky.

  5. I think Stavisky is here, too. Don’t know if he’s DLed or pending another move.
Maybe he was traded to the Redskins…

  6. Do they go Tyson Gillies, Quintin Berry, Domonic Brown? Lefty, Lefty, Lefty. Or do they break them up with Bozied?

  7. Just saw Stavisky on the DL.

I’d speculate they break up the lefties, especially versus a LH starter. They might move QBerry down in the order and move Galvis up.

Galvis can handle the bat, but can he get on base enough versus lefties?

  8. I thought Stutes was performing better then Worley and therefore Stutes would stay in the rotation while Worley goes to the bullpen. I’ve seen others state the team’s intent with Stutes now is to move him to the bullpen and determine if he has major league potential. Since they haven’t done the same with Worley is the thought that they’ve given up on him, they view him as a starter long-term or he just needs more innings? A lot of people, myself included, lumped these two guys together when they were drafted and hoped we’d get a productive ML’er out of at least one of them. I know this is just speculation but I’d like to hear anyone’s opinion.

  9. Don’t see no Edgar Garcia. And J. C. Ramirez was sent to class A(A). Don’t see no Tyson Brummett, either, so that may be a release. Also no Jon Velasqez, Santos Hernandez, *Justin MacIntosh, Chris Kissock, or Zach Sterner. Those were the guys I had down as candidates for that Level.

Looks like Susdorf will return to Clearwater, and put a small jam up in the OF.

  10. I’m sure Gillies will lead off because he’s the real prospect and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Galvis hit second and of course Brown will hit third. I’ll be curious to see who got bumped down to Clearwater and who got released. By the way, Sterner is on the DL still recovering from TJ surgery, he hopes to be back for the instructional league at the latest and possibly the last month or two at GCL.

  11. By the way, how sad is it that LHV has only two players younger than 26 (Savery is 24 and Bocock is 25). That’s the definition of AAAA.

  12. Rodeo: I think Stutes may be a hair ahead of Worley as a prospect, a bit more FB. And I think you are right, they want to get him used to the pen as a quicker way to majors, maybe even this year if Phils are desperate and he is mowing guys down. Maybe they think that in the pen, he can jump from 92 to 95-96, similar to Madson.

  13. BA says that Mike Stutes has no command and is a 2 pitch pitcher (Fastball and Slider). Two pitch RH pitchers get thrown into the Bullpen. Worely supposedly has more stamina, but no out pitch. Relievers usually need a plus out pitch.

  14. We have the following from our phuturephillies top 30 on the Reading roster:

    1. Domonic Brown

    2. Tyson Gillies

    8. Phillippe Aumont

    14. Freddy Galvis

    17. Michael Schwimer

    21. Quintin Berry

    23. Yohan Flande

    26. Brian Rosenberg

    HM: Cisco, Worley, Stutes

That’s a lot of legit prospects for AA in this era of career minor leaguers. A good year would allow any of Naylor, Escalona, or Chapman to make the top 30, too.

  15. Worley’s at a critical juncture in his career. Last year he started out dominant in his first 5-6 starts and was probably within one more good outing of advancing to LV, then lost his consistency for the rest of the season. Hopefully the dominance returns for good…or his days are numbered.

  16. Pchuck – you’re going to see more top 30 prospects before the year is over. Don’t be surprised if May and a few others are there before too long. On the other hand, don’t expect Dom Brown to be there in late July.
