12 Released by the Phils

The Phillies released twelve minor leaguers today as Minor League rosters begin to take shape with one week to go before opening day.  Those released from the organization include:

Pitcher Joe Bisenius–The Phils 12th round pick in the 2004 draft who went from legitimate prospect status to the list of releases over a period of three years.  He suffered from injuries, control issues and inconsistency which led to his ultimate release.

Pitcher Spencer Arroyo–Phils 31st round pick in 2008 draft.  The 20 year old was 2-2 with a 3.67 ERA in 16 appearances for Williamsport last year with a very high 1.69 WHIP.

Pitcher Freddy Ballestas–The 23 year old Ballestas pitched for both Williamsport and Lakewood last year, going a combined 1-3 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 appearances (5 starts).

Pitcher Ryan Bergh- Phils 26th round pick in 2008 draft.  The 25 year old Bergh was a relief pitcher for Lakewood last year and went 3-6 with a 5.05 ERA in 45 appearances.  He did earn 13 saves.

Pitcher Sean Grieve– The left handed Grieve was the phils 21st round pick in the 2008 draft. He made 16 appearances for WIlliamsport last season with an ERA well over 6.

Pitcher Jordan Meeker

Pitcher Todd Van STeensel

Pitcher Rick Guttormson

OF Gus Milner–Phils 14th round pick in 2006 draft.  Played for AA Reading for the majority of last season hitting .226/.292/.315 in 257 at bats with 3HR and 23 RBI.  Also had over 100 AB’s in CLearwater hitting .239. The soon to be 26 year old is a very big guy (6’5, 240), who simply did not provide the power needed to keep him around in a crowded of.

OF Arlen Quiroz–The 23 year old Quiroz has been in the organization for five years, never rising above SIngle A.   He hit .229/.314/.278 in fairly regular time in the CLearwater OF last year with 0HR 19 RBI and 20 SB.

1B Jeremy Hamilton– The 23 year old first baseman was the Phils 5th round pick in the 2008 draft.  He hit .255/.344/.357 in 294 AB’s for Lakewood last year with 4 HR and 32 RBI.

  1. Only a few head scratchers in Arroyo and Hamilton, but both are fringe guys anyway. I guess that’s the benefit of having a deeper system, fewer fringe guys need to be kept around.

  2. Hamilton could really pick but had little to no power, had no speed, and was on the smallish size.

  3. the only one that really suprises me is Arroyo. 20 years old, decent year at williamsport despite the high whip. You think there would be a front of the bullpen spot for him in lakewood.

  4. In today’s minor league inter-squad game Kelly Dugan was hitting left handed against a lefty. From what Greg Legg was saying to him before and after the AB, it sounds like he’s going to try to give up switch hitting. I guess they didn’t like what they saw from the right side. Hope he goes to Lakewood so we can how that turns out. Or maybe that’s a reason they will keep him at XST so he can start making adjustments before he goes to Williamsport.

  5. Mattair was not on the revised ST work groups and was not playing in the intrasquad games. I guess he did retire. Nelson, Stavisky, Chavez and Pinkney were moved to the Reading group as well as Stutes, Stephens, Mahar, and Spidale. Kennelly, Murphy, Overbeck, Sterner, and Velasquez were moved to Clearwater. Lakewood picked up Doss, Diekman, McConnell, Simon, and Wertz. Going to XST were Gugel, Angelle, Bolsenbroek, Julio Rodriguez, and Zuber. They still list Singleton at XST but he continues to play a lot of the Lakewood games. I guess we’ll know how all this shakes out in a few days, the last ST game is on 4/3.

  6. I’m going to try to make it to Carpenter when my son has spring break in the next couple of weeks. If possible I’ll get all the news from Mike Compton and Buck an pass it on. There’s a good chance I’ll be there all summer. If so I’ll pass on my observations.

  7. With the release of Van Steensel I guess that puts an end to our European experiment from a couple of years ago. I believe Jakub Sladek was released last year as well. I guess there’s no harm in signing these guys.
