Hot or Not

A look at the week of June 21-27.  Quick thoughts….Franco is certainly making the #1 prospect in the organization a debate….and with Franco’s promotion, Harold Martinez gets hot for the first time in his career…Hoby Milners negative turn around is concerning. I think he may be injured with the lack of K’s and increased walk rate over the last couple of starts.

Hot Hitters: Maikel Franco (.483, 5R 3HR 7RBI); Harold Martinez (.433); Willie Carmona (.417, 4R HR, 6RBI); Brock Stassi (.412); Larry Greene Jr, (.393); ANgelo Mora (.389, 5R 2HR 7RBI, 2SB); Aaron ALtherr (.379, HR, 5RBI); Brian Pointer (.357, 5RBI); Miguel ABreu (.357); Anthony Hewitt (.348, 3HR 7RBI); Honorable Mention: Ruf, Susdorf, Moore, Gillies, Valle, Oberto, Parr Continue reading Hot or Not →

Box Score Recap – 6/26/2013

Larry Greene’s on a 7-game hitting streak right now, with only 4ks in those 7 games. He’s OPSing .904 in his last ten games, and .717 in June. Greene shoots, you might say.

Oh boy, that’s bad. But no one complimented my killer “Steven Golden Sombrero” line yesterday, so today you get “Larry Greene Shoots”. Deal with it.

Jesse Biddle and Maikel Franco to Represent Phillies in Future’s Game

Both very deserving and probably the best pair of representatives since Dom Brown went on his own.

2013 Early Season DSL Report

The 2013 DSL season started a couple of weeks ago.  This post (like the previous VSL post) will summarize the new players on the roster and provide some clues on which players to watch over the rest of the season.  As with all the Latin American complex posts, observations are based almost entirely on stats, the playing time of prospects, and the prospects’ age.  Playing time is an important variable as the Phillies will naturally give playing time to the better prospects.  Thus pitchers in the starting rotation and hitters at prominent defensive spots (like C and SS) are generally held in high regard. Box Score Recap – 6/25/2013

All you need to know about Tuesday is this – Steven Golden Sombrero.

Ok, I guess here’s more of my thoughts – Zach Green went yard again- his fourth in the 9-day-old season. Cord Sandberg hit his first pro homerun, and Kelly Dugan hit his 9th on the year. Brian Pointer with a double and a triple hitting out of the leadoff spot for Lakewood in Roman Quinn’s absence. Quinn has a hairline fracture and will be in a cast for 4 weeks. Add rehab after that, and he’ll miss likely close to 2 months. That’s the bulk of the year. Bummer.

Why Carlos Tocci is Amazing

The Phillies made a very aggressive move when they sent 17 year old Carlos Tocci to full season Lakewood.  There were some that assumed it came with a ticket to Williamsport midseason, but so far the team as shown no indication of moving Tocci back.

To this point Tocci is only hitting .236/.300/.288 with 12 2Bs, 4 SB, 4 CS, 18BB, 33K, but there are many reason to find his year a huge success.

He is incredibly young but has advanced instincts now.  Tocci should be either finishing up his junior or senior year of high school right now.  He has more advanced baseball instincts than any high school player in the 2013 draft.  He may not be as physcially mature as his counterparts, but he is still younger than most draftees, and with a year of full season ball. Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

The ‘Pigs returned home with a 3-1 loss against Durham on Tuesday night after a successful 5-3 road trip. On the year, Lehigh Valley now sits at 41-37 and in 2nd place of the Northern Division of the International League, 7 games behind division leading Pawtucket. The ‘Pigs currently lead the wild card race by one game, and play at home through next Wednesday.

‘Pigs Prospects:Darin Ruf has had a good June, hitting .291 for the month after his 0-4 last night. I certainly did not expect anywhere near 2012 power numbers but Ruf’s 2013 numbers have been lower than I thought. 2 homers for the month of June thus far and 7HR 38RBI thru the half way mark of the IronPigs season.  Ruf is hitting .266/.346/.418 on the year with a 11%bb rate and a 26% K rate. Box Score Recap – 6/24/2013

Ethan Martin with another in a series of lines that look better if you skip the part we all know is the problem for Ethan Martin. 5BB and just 58% strikes, but he allowed just 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 8 in 6 innings. Be careful around Maikel Franco. He’s scalding hot. Like pre-lawsuit McDonald’s coffee hot. Andrew Pullin with his first HR of the year for Williamsport.

Larry Greene doubled and scored in the ninth to retake the lead after Delvi Francisco couldn’t hold it in the bottom of the eighth. Roman Quinn left that contest after the top of the first. He was hit by a pitch, stayed in the game to steal a base and score, and was then pulled – no details yet on any injury that may have occurred.

General Discussion – Week of 6-24-2013 – “Doesn’t it mean ‘Saint Diego’?” Edition

Late night Phillies this week. When will the West Coast realize East Coast people like stuff to happen earlier? Never, I fear.

Box Score Recap – 6/23/2013

Maikel Franco with 4 hits, just a double short of the cycle. Guy’s mashing so far in AA, with an OPS of 1.441 in four games. Zach Green is also raking so far – OPSing 1.209, though with 11 Ks in 31 PAs, with the usual late June SSSSS (Short Season Small Sample Size) caveat.

2012 High School draftee Drew Anderson with six hitless innings for Williamsport. 2013 pick Lee Ridenhour did his part with two more hitless innings, before fellow 2013 pick Rob Marcello gave up the first hit, a solo homerun, with 2 outs in the ninth.
