Phillies Make Roster Moves; October 7, 2016

The Phillies have outrighted 6 players according to a story posted by MLB Trade Rumors Jeff Todd.

In an announcement by club officials, the Phillies have cleared roster spots with the outright assignments of LHP Patrick Schuster, RHPs Frank Herrmann, Dalier HinojosaColton Murray, INF Emmanuel Burriss, and OF Jimmy Paredes.

Phillies Sign Billingsley to MLB Contract

Earlier this evening, the Phillies came to terms with free agent RHP Chad Billingley.  The sides agreed to a 1 year, $1.5M contract with performance bonuses, reported to be around $6.5M (by Jon Heyman)

The 30-year old Billingsley has pitched just 19 innings over the past two seasons (major/minor) because of elbow injuries.  He is attempting to comeback from TJ surgery and a repaired torn flexor tendon.  He passed his physical and the Phillies hope he an be in Philadelphia by the end of April or early May.  (Of note, Wandy Rodriguez recently failed a Phillies’ physical and went on to sign with the Atlanta Braves.) Phillies Acquire Reds’ Lively

The long-awaited trade of Marlon Byrd has finally occured.  The Phillies sent Byrd and cash to the Cincinnati Reds for RHP Ben Lively.  The trade caps weeks of anticipation by Phillies’ fans who have been waiting for the team to turn their few marketable assets into young prospects.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 50

Lively was the Reds 4th round pick (#135) in 2013.  He pitched for Pensacola, the Reds AA affiliate in the Southern League.  He was ranked as the Reds #8 prospect by MLB.

Lively began the year as the Reds’ preseason #13 and received the 2014 Minor League Player of the Year Award for the Reds as voted by the Cincinnati chapter of the BBWAA.

Transactions: Dec. 13-23

We all know that the Phillies traded Jimmy Rollins and cash to the Dodgers for RHP Zach Eflin and LHP Tom Windle.  We ‘ve also read that they have signed minor leaguers RHP Sean O’Sullivan (re-signed), RHP Kevin Slowey and 1B Chris McGuiness.

Baseball America also reported that the Phillies have signed RHP Stephen Shackleford and 2B Tyler Henson (re-signed).  Additionally BA reported that they have released RHP Ricky Bielski, RHP Josh Warner, LHP Angelo Almonte, LHP Rivar Angulo, 1B Chris Serritella, and SS Enmanuel Serra.

Report: Phillies Move Rollins, Bastardo in Separate Deals

So, while travelling north to PA on Interstate 95, my text and Twitter exploded.  First, with news of a ¨completed¨ trade of Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers and then with another trade where Antonio Bastardo was reportedly sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the Bastardo deal, the Phillies will receive Joely Rodriguez, a 6’1, 200 lb, left-handed pitcher who started in 2/3 of his 30 appearances for the Double-A Altoona Curve, and posted a 4.84 ERA.  He participated in the Arizona Fall League as a member of the Scottsdale Scorpions, which included seven Phillies’ players as well as Lehigh Valley pitching coach Ray Burris.  Rodriguez rebounded from a difficjult regular season to post a 3-0 record in 7 starts against the higher level competition of the AFL.  He posted a 2.38 ERA, struck out 22, and walked 6 in 22.2 innings.

Although the Rollins trade ¨broke”first, the players involved haven’t been announced.  There has been speculation that the Phillies will receive a pair of minor league pitching prospects, that some money will change hands (this requires approval by the commissioner), and that a third team is involved (the Marlins?) and that player(s) from that trade are involved.

So until we learn more, here’s a place to talk about these moves.

D’backs Sign Tomas

As you may have heard, Yasmany Tomas has reached an agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a 6 year, $68.5M contract.  The Trade Rumors link is below.

I’m sure you need a place to vent about the Phillies’ inabity to sign Tomas, so here it is.  But, really, after we’ve heard so much about Tomas breaking the $100M barrier for a Cuban signee, and with all the teams who were supposedly “in” on him (SanDiego, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Arizona, San Francisco, and some “mystery” teams) doesn’t it seem odd that he only got a little over $11M/year?

Let the bashing begin.

Phillies Add 3 Pitchers to 40 Man Roster

With less than 3 hours remaining before the deadline to add players to the 40-man roster, the Phillies have added 3 pitchers.

Beat writers Todd Zolecki and Jim Salisbury announced over Twitter that the Phillies have added LHP Jesse Biddle and Adam Morgan and RHP Nefi Ogando to the 40-Man Roster.  They are now protected from Rule 5 Draft in December.

This leaves 2 empty slots on the Phillies 40-man roster.  Their site only shows 37 players.  For some reason they haven’t added Jerome Williams, who signed a $2.5M extension on October 21st.

Minor Moves

MLB Trade Rumors reports eight minor league signings by the Phillies.  This isn’t too big a deal.  Last week, Baseball America reported that 16 Phillies’ AAA and AA players entered free agency.  The Phillies will be signing a lot of minor league free agents to fill out rosters.

The signings of John Hester, Brian Bogusevic, and Darin Mastroianni had been reported earlier.

Andres Blanco and Russ Canzler represent the resigning of players who were on IronPigs roster last season.

Outfielders Jeff Francoeur, Xavier Paul, and infielder Chase D’Arnaud will be new to the organization.

Phillies Sign FA Sizemore and Avoid Arbitration with Jimenez

Yesterday, the Phillies signed Jerome Williams and I opined that he was the cheaper option over Kyle Kendrick.  Today’s story, first reported by Todd Zolecki, announces the signing of Grady Sizemore and Cesar Jimenez.  The Jimenez signing keeps some cheap pitching depth in the organization.  The Sizemore signing coupled with Darin Ruf’s only playing first base through his first five games for Tigres del Licey, probably signals the inevitable end of the “Darin Ruf Outfield Experiment” and quite possibly his tenure in the organization.
