Phillies Promote Maikel Franco to Reading

News just breaking that the Phillies are moving Franco up to AA.  It has been a real breakout year for Franco with him showing more opposite field approach without sacrificing any of his game.  His strikeout rate has dropped and there have been more positive opinions on his defense.  There wasn’t a 3B to block him in AA so it is an easy decision.

This may be the first of many promotions or a single promotion, we will see over the coming days.

Prospect Spotlight: Seth Rosin

Let me start off by saying I was wrong about Rosin.  I thought that he was a bullpen piece all the way and so far he has gone a long way to proving other wise.

How We Got Here:

Rosin was a 2010 4th round pick by the San Francisco Giants out of the University of Minnesota.  In college his fastball worked 91-92 touching 94, though the summer before he touched 96 on the Cape.  His secondary offering were fringy and most scouts thought he belonged in the bullpen possibly in a high leverage role.  The Giants moved him to the bullpen part time after drafting him, but after acquiring him in the Hunter Pence trade the Phillies moved him back to the rotation. Why Jesse Biddle Was Pulled From a Game Today

Jesse Biddle’s final line today was:

0.2 IP  1 H 3 ER 4 BB 0 K and 41 pitches

he was then pulled from the game and replaced by Tyler Knigge prompting internet speculation about an injury.  It turns out Biddle’s 41 pitches pushed him over the organizations limit for number of pitches in an inning.  To this point there is nothing to suggest that there is any sort of injury concern. AA Pitching Transactions and Discussion

A couple reports from Mike Drago and Anthony Burkhart on Twitter, (sorry to them I don’t know who “scooped” who – they’re both getting the same info on these couple items, at least). Continue reading AA Pitching Transactions and Discussion

Austin Wright to the DL

Media folks on Twitter are reporting that a Reading press release states Austin Wright is heading to the DL with elbow tendinitis. No impending doctor visits were announced in the release, so we’ll have to just wait and see on that front. Wright has given up 1 hit, 11 walks, 6 earned runs and struck out 5 in six innings this year. He was ranked as the Phillies #18 prospect this off-season by Baseball America after a fairly strong 2012 where he gave up 147 hits, 60 walks and 57 earned runs while striking out 133 in 147 and 2/3 innings.

Tom Cochran will replace Wright at Reading. Cochran was 9-5 with a 3.96 ERA at Lehigh Valley in 2012.

Prospect Debate: Brody Colvin, Cameron Rupp, Gabriel Lino

Since there is a lot of debate about the placement of guys towards the back of the rankings with huge swings in their value.  Brad and I are going to take on some of them that we have very different opinions on and debate where we think they should rank and what their upside is going forward.

Brody Colvin (RHP):

Ranking: Brad – 19, Matt – 30-35

Brad: Listen, I’m of the mindset that relievers, even those that are headed for the back of the bullpen, don’t belong high on prospect lists until they are knocking on the MLB door, (Aumont and DeFratus are in my top 15, Kenny Giles barely makes my top 30, for example).

So, if I thought there were zero chance Colvin was going to make it as a starter, or if I didn’t think his back-up plan was a back-end bullpen guy, I would probably have him way down the list – maybe in the early 30s. But there is still a chance he pulls his control together and sticks as a starter, at which point his ceiling would probably go back to a mid-rotation starter at least. He has the stuff to do it, but his control is obviously the issue.
