Open Discussion: Mid-Week November 1st

Congratulations to the Houston Astros.  Now, let’s get the off season rolling.

This is a special mid-week edition of the weekly open discussion.  This week’s discussion auto-published before I could edit and manually post.  I had some things going on and which were compounded when the internet was unavailable Sunday night.  So, a couple things I wanted to include were left out.  So, here they are.   Continue reading Open Discussion: Mid-Week November 1st

Open Discussion: Week of October 29th

Just one or two more games left in the season and we can officially start baseball’s hot stove season.  Then we will get a welcome break from all baseball stories centering on the Dodgers and Astros, and we we will return to baseball normalcy where all the stories are about the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Cubs with a smattering of releases about the Rangers, Cardinals, Astros, and Stanton.  And of course, those cheatin’ bastards, the Braves. Open Discussion: Week of October 22nd

The world series participants became set when the Houston Astros defeated the “evil empire” Saturday night.  They joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fall classic.  The first time 100-win teams will face each other since 1970 – Baltimore (108) and Cincinnati (102). The playoffs are in full swing.  And, in true Phillies-centric fashion, I don’t care.  Guess I’m less of a baseball fan and just a Phillies fan.  Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of October 8th

Open Discussion: Week of October 1st

The Phillies closed out the season with an 11-0 pasting of the hated New York Mets.  They posted a 4-2 record over the final week with series wins over the equally hated Washington National and the Mets.  The Phillies finished with a 66-96 record and a .407 PCT.  They posted a 71-91 record in 2016, but showed promise after the All Star break this year when the went 37-38 after the infusion of several of their young prospects – Nick Williams, Jorge Alfaro, Rhys Hoskins, and J.P. Crawford and some improved second-half pitching from guys like Victor Arano, Jake Thompson, Ben Lively, Adam Morgan, and Hoby Milner.   Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of October 1st

Open Discussion: Week of September 24th

This week the Phillies posted a 4-3 record.  They came within a Pinto of sweeping a four-game series from the Los Angeles Dodgers.  They had a 4-3 lead in the fourth game when Mark Leiter turned the game over to the bullpen.  Leiter had held the Dodgers to just one earned run in his six innings.  The Phillies then dropped two out of three to the Atlanta Braves.  They have a 62-94 record and a .397 PCT.  They are still not the worst team in baseball.
