In his first start of the year for Lehigh Valley, Carlos Carrasco was lights out going six shutout innings, yielding only four hits and didnt walk a batter.  Carrasco threw 85 pitches, 60 for strikes, while striking out four. He left after six, and the ‘Pigs bullpen immediately blew the 1-0 lead.  The game currently remains tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th.

—Lou Marson was pulled from the starting lineup on Friday, presumably because of the trickle down effect resulting from the strained oblique suffered in the Phillies game by Carlos Ruiz.  The Phillies are calling Ruiz day-to day, but an oblique issue is extremely difficult for a catcher. One would believe the Phils would have to make a quick decision on the possibility of placing Ruiz on the disabled list because of the risk of having only one healthy catcher.

This is a pet project I’ve been working on, and after an extensive amount of editing work, I’ve finally finished up part 1 of my project, looking at offense in college baseball. My goal in doing this was to find out exactly how each of the major Division 1 conferences stack up against each other. We kind of know which conferences are traditionally strong (PAC 10, SEC, etc etc), but I wanted to know how strong, and I wanted to have a frame of reference to be able to compare two conferences, and eventually two players from different conferences and see how their offensive numbers differ. The one area that I can’t dig into, simply because I don’t have the resources, is park factors, which I believe plays an important role, one I just won’t be able to investigate at this point. Notes;

* Vance Worley and Mike Stutes were both double jumped to Reading. I really can’t believe it, but it should be interesting.

* Edgar Garcia isn’t on the Reading roster.

* Michael Taylor is on the Reading squad, as is Brad Harman, which I find a bit surprising.

* Jason Knapp made the Lakewood roster, Trevor May isn’t here, and Julian Sampson is absent too, so it looks like he’s FSL bound.

* Gose and Collier are both in the Lakewood outfield, and Mattair is listed at 3B, with Overbeck not on the roster, which to me indicates he’s being jumped to Clearwater. Sebastian Valle is also listed on the Lakewood roster, and he’ll presumably split time with D’Arnaud.

With Spring Training approaching its long awaited end, the majority of roster decisions appear to have been made with some, but not many surprises.  The following is an educated (?) guess at how the ‘Pigs will look as the season opens against Scranton, along with each players stats from last year. Todd Zolecki is reporting that Rule 5 Draft pick Robert Mosebach has cleared waivers and has been offered back to the Angels. who have accepted Mosebach back into the fold. That leaves three vying for the one bullpen spot remaining in Philadelphia.  RHP Gary Majewski, along with lefties Jack Taschner and JA Happ are the last three standing. It seems likely that the true competition at this point is between Taschner and Happ(as lefties), although Majewski has pitched very well in Spring Training.    One has to feel for Happ who has done everything asked of him over the pasttwo years both for the IronPigs last year, as well as during his stint with the Phillies.  Although I believe he ends up back with the IronPigs as a starter to begin the year, I believe Happ will play a prominent role in Philadelphia before the years end.

The Phils’ international scouting department signed 16-year-old Domingo Santana from the Dominican Republic. Santana, a 6-foot-5 outfielder with a strong throwing arm, received a $300,000 signing bonus. He had also been pursued by the Yankees.

I’m going to try and find some more info on him, and if I do, I’ll update this post. Stay tuned.

Santana is a 6-foot-5 righthanded hitter with a plus arm in right field. He’s an average runner with a long, projectable frame and is still learning to adjust to breaking balls.
