Baseball America released its NYP Top 20 list today. Cesar Hernandez (2B) is 9th, Domingo Santana 12th, and Aaron Altherr 15th. One manager compares Hernandez to an “Alberto Callaspo / Erick Aybar type”, while the comments on Santana are what you’d expect–he’s still young, needs to improve contact rate, etc. Comments on Altherr are similar to those in last week’s GCL roundup.

The last of the End of the Year reports, which takes a look at the bullpen in the bottom half of the organization.
Lakewood
Justin Beal, 24, 24 games, 3-4 with a 2.77 ERA; 39IP 44H 15BB 24K, 1HR allowed, 1.77 GO/AO, .303 opp. avg., .333 vs. LH, .270 vs. RH, .171 with RISP, 1.51 WHIP. ALthough a nice ERA, Beal was hit fairly hard this year, but with limited damage thanks to effectiveness with RISP. End of the Season Report–Bullpen–Top Half
A last look at the bullpen for Lehigh Valley, Reading, and Clearwater. A good amount of talent, and unlike most other areas in the organization, some potential for big league movement come 2011 with the impending free agency of several Phils relievers (Durbin, Contreras, Romero), along with the possibility that David Herndon begins next season in Allentown. Gulf Coast League Top 20
Baseball America has begun its league-by-league Top 20 lists and published its Gulf Coast League list today. Jesse Biddle (#7) and Aaron Altherr (#8) were the only Phils on the list. They note command and mound presence as positives for Biddle with the need to develop consistency on his curve and change as the area for improvement. Altherr is noted as a plus runner who may develop some power and as “solid” defensively in center.
Mathieson to the FIL
Just a quick hit that Scott Mathieson left the Phillies today for Florida, to participate in the Florida Instructional League. Mathieson who has been on the DL, will be rehabbing from his lower back strain as well as continuing his work on the splitter.
End of the Year Report–Starters, Bottom Half
Clearly the strength of the Minor League system, the starting pitching at the bottom half of the system has the potential to place several members into the Phils rotation by 2013. Next year could be a real juggling act with a lot of talent and a limited number of spots. Look for the first of the reports on the bullpen on Friday.
Lakewood
Jared Cosart, 20, 14 starts, 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA; 71.1 IP 60H 16BB 77K, 1.93 GO/AO, .224 opp. avg., .234 vs. LH, .218 vs. RH, .314 with RISP, 1.06 WHIP. Cosart’s health problems continued in 2010 as he missed the last two plus months of the season with elbow issues. When he pitched prior to his injury he was somewhere between very good and dominant in the SALLY. Lehigh Valley
Nate Bump, 34, 20 starts, 8-4 with a 3.35 ERA; 107.1 IP 123 25 BB 54K, 7 HR allowed, 1.43 GO/AO; .293 opp. avg., .252 with RISP; 1.38 WHIP. Bump was an International League All star and then the wheels fell off in the second half of the season as he was dealing with a myriad of physical issues, starting just 1 game in all of August and September. End of Season Review–OF
A final look at the Outfielders in the Minor League system at year’s end, how they produced in 2010, and what we can expect in 2011. A look at the Starting Pitchers in the Top Half of the system (Lehigh Valley, Reading and Clearwater) coming next, probably Sunday.
Lehigh Valley
John Mayberry, 26, 495 AB’s; .267/.328/.412 with 15 HR and 65 RBI; .350 vs. LH, .239 vs. RH; 20/23 SB; .266 with RISP; 7% bb rate, 21% k rate; 307 Post All Star. Mayberry has had the same trouble this year as in years past in that he has alot of trouble hitting righties and strikes out too much. That being said, he hits over .340 against lefties, can run and produces runs. He has one option left and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if he were in a dogfight with Ben Francisco(arb eligible) for the 5th outfielder spot next season in Philadelphia. Remembering Chase Utley’s first year as a “pseudo regular” for the Phils, Charlie Manuel may want to platoon Dominic Brown against certain lefties and Mayberry could provide punch against those lefties. This is slightly old news now, a few days anyway, and it might have been mentioned in the comments somewhere, but I wanted to put a post up anyway.

Lehigh Valley
Paul Hoover, 34, 255 AB’s; .247/.326/.345 with 2HR and 21 RBI; .300 vs. LH, .231 vs. RH, .246 with RISP, .288 Post All STar; 9% bb rate, 23% k rate. 24/81 (30%) CS; 7 errors (.986), 6 passed balls in 67 games. Hoover did not play as well in 2010 as he did in 2009 and the years may be catching up with him. Still serviceable as a AAA catcher but the Phils may want to look elsewhere for depth.
