Threshers Recap – 5/4/2019

Clearwater (12-18) beat Daytona, 9-6.

Julian Garcia was spotted a 3-run lead and proved unable to hold it.  He successfully kept the Tortugas off the board through three innings, but finally squandered the lead in a 32-pitch fourth inning.  He issued a lead off walk,  2-run HR, and loaded the bases on three singles before recording an out on a game-tying force out. Threshers Recap – 5/3/2019

Clearwater (11-18) lost to Daytona, 10-1.

This was never really much of a game.  Andrew Brown (1-3, 9.53) surrendered 5 runs in the first two innings on 8 hits.  He walked one and struck out one.  He threw 57 pitches in two ineffective innings. Continue reading Threshers Recap – 5/3/2019

Threshers Recap – 4/30/2019

I visited the Complex today.  There were 3 games being played, two against teams from the Detroit organization and one against a travelling team.  I could only stay less than a couple hours before a recent injury started to bother me.  I hadn’t been to the Complex in over a month and I spent a lot of time talking to old friends.  Here’s what little I saw.

First, an Extended Spring Training Roster was available (2019 Extended Spring Training Roster).

I recorded who was playing with which coaching staff (Williamsport v. the GCL staffs) but I’m not ready to guess if these will become permanent assignments.  Luke Miller hit a HR while I was talking to one security guard.  I watched Jake Kinney pitch an inning.  His FB was 88-91.  He threw a slider and showed a CB on the last pitch I saw.  I cut short a conversation with one of Clearwater’s finest when Jaylen Smith took the mound on Roberts.  He pitched well. His FB range was 86-89.  Curtis Mead came to bat while I was there and with a shift on purposely poked a ball through the 3-4 hole into RF.  I got into a discussion with a scout from Baseball Prospectus.  He told me that Kyle Glogoski was shipped to Lakewood.  I haven’t seen the transaction, but I think he was charting during the Lakewood game.  That’s all, intrasquads tomorrow, but it’s my 20th anniversary.

Clearwater (11-14) beat Fort Myers, 3-0 in Alec Bohm’s Advanced A debut. Continue reading Threshers Recap – 4/30/2019

Threshers Recap – 4/29/2019

No games scheduled for Clearwater and Lakewood, but they shared one very important transaction item on the off day.  Third Baseman, Alec Bohm, was assigned to Clearwater from Lakewood on April 29, 2019.  Continue reading Threshers Recap – 4/29/2019

Threshers Recap – 4/28/2019

Clearwater (10-14) lost to Tampa, 7-6.

Julian Garcia (2.29) scattered 5 hits over five innings of shutout ball.  He walked none and struck out six.  And then, Gustavo Armas (1-1, 15.30) entered the game.  And, blew the save.  Luis Carrasco (8.49) came in and picked off an inherited runner and pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up one run on 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out three. Open Discussion: Week of April 29, 2019

The week started poorly with two bad losses to the Mets (1-5 and 0-9).  They rebounded to win the final game of the series (6-0), but then came home to drop the first game of a four-game series with the woeful Marlins (1-3).  (That’s 2 total runs in 3 losses.)  They bounced back again with 3 consecutive wins.  They got great pitching in games two and four from Jerad Eickhoff (seven, shutout inning in a 4-0 win) and Zach Eflin (complete game, 5-1 win).  Jake Arrieta battled and survived another bullpen implosion in Saturday’s 12-9 win.

Andrew Brown lasted three innings.  He gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks, and struck out two.  He threw 44 strikes in 74 pitches, just under 60%.

Four Threshers’ relievers – Grant Dyer (1.38), Connor Brogdon (2.35), Seth McGarry (5.40), and Austin Ross (3.95) – combined to toss seven innings of no-hit ball.  They allowed 2 bases on balls and struck out seven with Ross earning his first save. Continue reading Threshers Recap – 4/27/2019
