Clearwater (5-11) lost to Tampa, 8-4.
Kyle Young (0-3, 5.40) had a rough night. He was up-and-down thru five innings. He got touched for 3 runs in the first inning. The Tarpons sat on and hit first pitch fastballs. They got a lead off triple and a 2-run HR that way. A better decision on a ground ball to short might have saved a run if the throw would have gone to first rather than been wide to the plate.
Young settled down and limited Tampa to a single (first pitch FB) in the second inning, striking out two.
Young loaded the bases in the third on 3 seeing-eye singles, two on first-pitch sliders. A throwing error on a possible double play ball got an out, but let in an extra run.
Young rallied with a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. But, the fifth started HR, 3u, 2B, 2B. Fortunately, he bore down and finished with back-to-back strike outs.
Young finished with 5.0 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. He threw 78 pitches 57 for strikes (73.1%), not a bad percentage. He threw 17 of 25 first pitch strikes (68%).
Young threw just 28 FB, 87-92 mph. He sat 89-90. He got all his strike outs on his slider, 4 swinging and 2 looking. Overall, he got 13 swings and misses, only one at a FB at 87 mph.
Grant Dyer (1.86) pitched two one-hit innings. Austin Ross (4.66) gave up one run in two innings of no-hit, two walk ball.
The Threshers scored a run in the fourth inning on Jhailyn Ortiz’ first Clearwater HR. They closed to 7-4 with 3 runs in the sixth on Madison Stokes’ RBI single and Jake Scheiner’s 2-run triple.
Matt Vierling (.322) went 3-4 with a double. Ortiz had 2 hits.
