Threshers Recap – 4/11/2019

Clearwater (2-6) was two-hit by Lakeland, 2-1.

Damon Jones (0-1, 1.13) pitched five innings and gave up 2 runs on five hits and 3 walks.  He struck out eight.  One of his runs was unearned, but I can’t make out why based on the play description.  Gustavo Armas struck out three in two, 2-hit innings.  Ismael Cabrera gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two in the eighth.

The Threshers showed little offense.  Edgar Cabral doubled in the second inning, and Nick Maton hit a solo HR in the ninth.  Two of their 3 walks were erased on double plays,  They also reached on a hit batter.

(Sorry for the brevity in this and the other recaps.  I had an accident and my left index finger is bandaged and useless, except for hitting extra keys.  My normal hunt-and-peck has become hunt-peck, hunt-peck, hunt-peck, backspace, hunt-peck, hunt-peck, hunt-peck, mouse back to block and delete a single character, hunt-peck, repeat… I’m up to about 60% efficiency.  And now my grandkids are here for a two-week visit.)

12 thoughts on “Threshers Recap – 4/11/2019

  1. Bohm has 8 hits in 20 AB since starting the season 0 for 11. He seems to be getting comfortable. I expect the power will surface soon enough.

Did Garcia get hurt in the previous game? He was lifted early and doesn’t appear to have played yesterday.

  2. Does it seem the Phillies are fast tracking Dom Pipkin?
He was pitching in a California HS league at this time last year.
    Now starting in Lakewood.
Can only remember one other HS pitcher doing that for them..Shane Watson….but he was technically a first round pick.
    Cannot think of any others?

    1. I think some of those baby aces may have done the same but that was under a previous regime. They haven’t really drafted many highly rated HS pitchers lately. Except for Gowdy who immediately got hurt.

      1. Yeah…..that is probably it…..even Watson and Gueller got hurt or came down with some arm ailments, almost right out of the shoot.
Their philosophy in the past it seem to me with HS pitchers was nurse them along the first two years…either two years in the rookie league like the GCL….or one year there then up to Williamsport for short season ball…..but keep them in ExtST for that second year until the June start dates for either the GCL or NYP league.

I hope Pipkin stays healthy and can get at least 20 starts this season in the SALLY.

        1. I think it just depends on the pedigree of the kid. I think the first and second rounders would often start in Lakewood. Pipkin was considered maybe a third round talent, iirc, so hopefully it’s a sign that they like what he’s showing them. I would take 20 starts in the SAL from him in a heartbeat.

            1. Good call. He got crushed his first year in Lakewood but it showed that the org liked him.

  3. Damon Jones is old for the levels he has played at, but man does he have some great K rates. I saw this on Fangraphs, “Jones is a big-bodied, 24-year-old lefty whose fastball plays above it’s velo due to deception and extension. He has an average curveball.”

Anyone have any other reports on him?

    1. I’ve seen him 92-94 mph, maxing 95-96 mph. Big strong guy. Control is good, command sometimes spotty. Average curve and change. pretty remarkable talent for where he was picked. He may never be famous, but i’ll bet he’s a big-leaguer some day.

  4. Glad to see Bohm hitting , Maton showing a little of everything power , speed , defense.
