End of Season Review–Corner Infield

A look at the Corners Infielders in the Phils system in 2010, what they did, and what we can expect in 2011. Next up: Middle Infield most likely over the weekend.

Lehigh Valley

Andy Tracy, 36, 425 AB’s; .275/.373/.492 with 21 HR and 80 RBI; 2/3 SB; .286 vs. LH, .272 vs. RH, .247 post all star break; .263 with RISP. 14% bb rate, 23% k rate. 6 errors in 87 games at 1B (.992), 8.38 R/F.  Tracy has been a mainstay in Allentown since the inception of the Lehigh Valley franchise, however the combination of injuries and the emergence of Matt Rizzotti most likely will lead to Tracy’s off season departure.  Even with a banged up shoulder for most of the season, Tracy put up very good numbers, continues to give you a very good at bat, and can only help a team with his attitude. Lakewood

Brody Colvin, 20, 23 starts, 6-7 with a 3.17 ERA; 122IP 109H 39BB 108K, 1.20 GO/AO; .236 opp. avg., .214 vs. LH, .253 vs. RH, .206 with RISP, 1.21 WHIP, 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA since July 1. After a rough April, Colvin has been dominant throughout the rest of the year. His innings are being monitored as he is already at 120+.

Trevor May, 20, Clearwater, 16 games, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70IP 53H 61BB 90K, 0.76 GO/AO; .212 opp. avg., 1.63 WHIP. Lakewood: 8 starts, 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA; 48IP 34H 18BB 67K, 0.87 GO/AO; .199 opp. avg., 1.08 WHIP. Totals: 24 games, 10-7 with a 3.97 ERA; 118IP 87H 79BB 157K, 0.80 GO/AO, .207 opp. avg. May seems to have gotten both his confidence and his control back in Lakewood.  Hitters have struggled against him at both levels, as May clearly has Low A mastered. Around the System, Starters, Top Half

A look at the starting rotations for the Top levels of the Phils Minor League system with a look at the lower levels coming up early next week.

Around The System–Catcher

Thin at catcher throughout the organization as you have to go down to Single A Lakewood before seeing a name that has starting catcher potential at the major league level.

A last in season look at the Middle Infield in the Minor League system

Lehigh Valley

Ozzie Chavez, 27, Reading: .218/.316/.287 in 188 AB’s. 1 HR and 18RBI; 3/7 SB. 12% bb rate, 15% k rate. LEHIGH VALLEY: .232/.263/.366 in 112 AB’s; 4 HR and 9 RBI; 1 SB; 4% bb rate, 18% k rate. Around the System, Corner Infield

One last post trade deadline trip around the system, prior to post season reviews. Look for Middle Infield sometime late next week.

Lehigh Valley

Andy Tracy, 36, 301 AB’s; .282/.392/.502; 14 HR 53 RBI; .310 vs. LH, .274 vs. RH, .282 with RISP, .257 in July; 15% bb rate, 23% k rate. 67 games at 1B, 5 errors (.991); 8.33 R/F. Tracy has struggled with shoulder problems most of the season and it has shown in his recent power numbers.  Still consistent however.

Neil Sellers, 28, 330 AB’s; .258/.326/.355; 3HR 31 RBI; .299 vs. LH, .255 vs. RH, .241 with RISP, .253 in July, 9% bb rate, 18% k rate. 32 games at 1B with 1 error (.996); 8.72 R/F. 48 games at 3B with 2 errors (.983), 2.38 R/F. The disappointment with Sellers has been his power numbers which have dropped precipitously since his AA days.  His fielding, which was questioned in years past, has been serviceable. Around the System, Relief Pitchers , Bottom Half

A look at the relief pitching in the lower half of the organization.

Lakewood

Justin Beal, 24, Williamsport: 4 games, 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 4.2 IP 1BB 1K; Lakewood: 8 games, 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA; 14.1 IP 14H 5BB 10K, .280 opp. avg. The Phils 28th round pick in the ’09 draft has done enough to stick around and turn a head or two.

Mike Bolsenbroek, 23, 8 games, 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA; 12.2 IP 15H 7BB 9K, 1.00 GO/AO; .306 opp. avg. 42nd round pick in the ’08 draft hasn’t been great and hasn’t been horrible. Continue reading Around the System, Relief Pitchers , Bottom Half

Around the System–Relievers, Top Half

Another look at how relievers are performing at the top half of the Phils minor league system as the trade deadline approaches.  Look for reliever updates for Lakewood, Williamsport and GCL this weekend or next week.

Lehigh Valley

Antonio Bastardo, 24, 7 games with Lehigh Valley and has not allowed an earned run while striking out 10 in 5.2 innings.  Bastardo has bounced around so much the last two years, that the fact that he is still just 24 is easily forgotten.  He continues to have good stuff.  Staying off the DL and command issues are the key.

Alex Concepcion, 25, 22 games, 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA; 30 IP 23H  16BB 18K, 5 hr allowed, 1.30 WHIP; 0.92 GO/AO; .205 opp. avg., .280 with RISP; .260 vs. LH, .161 vs. RH. Concepcion has been hurt badly by the home run ball.  He throws strikes and has a very good change up but needs more consistency. Continue reading Around the System–Relievers, Top Half

Around the System, Bottom Half

A look at the bottom half of the system, with a good deal of talent to talk about.

Lakewood

Brody Colvin, 19, 17 games, 5-6 with a 3.87 ERA; 93 IP 82H 31BB 80K, 1.21 WHIP, .234 opp. avg., 1.11 GO/AO; .217 vs. LH, .245 vs. RH, .209 with RISP. Colvin may be the biggest bright spot among the pitchers in the organization since May. Since May 1, he is 4-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 13 starts, walking 22 and striking out 71 in 77.2 innings of work.

Trevor May, 20, 16 games in Clearwater, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70 IP 53H 61BB 90K; .212 opp. avg., 0.76 GO/AO, 1.63 WHIP. Has made two starts in Lakewood with a line of: 11IP 11H 7ER 5BB 13K. May’s problems are well documented as his control.  He has as much talent as anyone in the organization but needs to find the plate. He is currently averaging 7.33 BB/9, while also averaging 11.44 K/9. Continue reading Around the System, Bottom Half

Around the System–Relief Pitchers

A second look at Relief Pitchers. See below for stats and comments.

Lehigh Valley

Scott Mathieson, 26, 25 games, 2-2 with a 2.43 ERA, 12 saves, 29.2IP 20H 12BB 34K, 3 hr allowed, 0.68 GO/AO; 1.08 WHIP; .194 opp. avg., .222 vs. LH, .172 vs. RH, .273 with RISP. Slight bumps lately for Mathieson but he remains right at the top of the radar screen for a Phils call up.

Mike Zagurski, 27, 27 games, 0-2 with a 2.48 ERA, 29 IP 22H 13BB 43K , 1 hr allowed, 1.21 WHIP, 1.33 GO/AO, .206 opp. avg., .229 vs. LH, .186 vs. RH, .205 with RISP. Has not given up an earned run since April 30.  Zagurski has been outstanding of late as the lefty stopper in the ‘Pigs bullpen.  Good command and has been striking out hitters at a very impressive rate.
