Lehigh Valley continues playing a much better brand of baseball, having gone 4-2 over the past week and are now 18-14 and tied for 2nd place of the Northern Division of the International League, 0.5 games behind division leading Scranton. The ‘Pigs finish up their four game series in Toledo this evening and then return home for a four game series against Norfolk, before heading up the Northeast Extension for four in Scranton. Around the System–Middle Infield
A first look at the Middle Infield. Look for the report on outfielders Sunday (Note: Stats are thru games of 5/9/11)
Lehigh Valley
Josh Barfield, 28, .237/.269/.281 in 97 AB’s. 2HR 12 RBI, 4SB 2CS, 5% bb rate, 16% k rate, .233 vs. LHP, .239 vs. RHP, .222 with RISP. 26 games at 2B with 2 errors, (.982), 4.23 R/F. Barfield has yet to get it going at the plate and is adequate in the field making the run of the mill play but nothing spectacular.
Kevin Frandsen, 28, .321/369/.505 in 109 AB’s,. 3HR 18 RBI; 6/6 SB; 4% bb rate, 5% k rate, .391 vs. LH, .270 vs. RH, .292 with RISP. 20 games at SS with 4 errors (.951); 3.85 R/F; 3 games at 1B with 1 error; 4 games at 2B without an error; and 3 games at 3B without an error. Frandsen has probably been the MVP of Lehigh Valley through the first thirty plus games providing plenty of punch at the plate and providing solid defense with versatility. Scrappy, its difficult to not like the way he plays.
Brian Bocock, 26, Only 22 AB’s with Lehigh Valley so far after coming back from wrist surgery in Spring Training. Hitting .182 in the early going. 6 games at SS with 1 error (.967). Continue reading Around the System–Middle Infield
Around the System–Corner Infield

Lehigh Valley

Blanton to the DL, Vance Worley Called Up
The parade to the disabled list continues in Philadelphia, with Joe Blanton being placed on the 15 day disabled list with a “right elbow impingement”. On the bright side, tomorrow which was Blanton’s day to pitch, is also Vance Worley’s day in Lehigh Valley. Worley has been called up to make the start against the Mets tomorrow. Worley,23, has been impressive for the ‘Pigs in his four starts this year, going 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA. In 22.2 innings, Worley has allowed 19 hits, walked 6 and struck out 25, and holds a WHIP of 1.10. The Phils are not losing a whole heck of a lot with Worley in the rotation rather than Blanton, however the myriad of injuries and resulting lack of depth now becomes quite a concern.
Lehigh Valley Weekly Report 28 April 2011
Up and down this week for Lehigh Valley who finished the week at 3-4, although on an up note after their 8-2 victory over visiting Pawtucket last evening. The ‘Pigs are at .500 (10-10) and in 3rd place of the Northern Division of the International League, four games behind division leading Scranton. Lehigh Valley continues playing at home over the next week with 2 more games against Pawtucket (Red Sox), followed by a four game series against Buffalo (Mets). Contreras to DL, Stutes Called Up
The Phillies placed closer Jose Contreras on the DL with a flexor pronator strain and have called up RHP Mike Stutes, from AAA Lehigh Valley. Stutes, 24, was an 11th round pick by the Phillies in the 2008 draft out of Oregon State and had been very impressive during Spring Training. In his 7 appearances thus far this season for Lehigh Valley, Stutes was 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA and a save in his 10 innings of work. Stutes walked 4 and struck out an impressive 14 batters and comes up with a WHIP of 1.30.
From the Lehigh Valley perspective, this thins out the back end of the bullpen with Zagurski and Stutes in Philly to go along with the early struggles of Scott Mathieson. Look for Michael Schwimer, Jason Grilli and Juan Perez to pick up the slack in the short term.
