Sunday mailbag

I was hoping to write a longer post today, but due to some extenuating circumstances I haven’t had the time to do the research needed. That said, I did receive a few emails, so I’ll answer those below the fold. Thanks to those of you who submitted questions.

July 23rd Discussion

Last night, there were games played, and we’ll discuss them here. We won’t discuss trade rumors. You have places to discuss that, this post isn’t one of them.

* Buchanan; 6 IP – 1 ER – 4 H – 2 BB – 5 K

July 21 Discussion

I won’t even bother with the box scores. All anyone is going to discuss are the trade rumors surrounding Jayson Werth and Roy Oswalt and whoever else. So just have a go, no using fighting it.

July 20 Discussion

Another day, another roundup

GCL Phillies won 5-4.
Williamsport won 3-0.
Clearwater lost 4-3.
Reading won 6-1.
Lehigh Valley won 10-8.

July 19th Discussion

A new week is upon us. First, Sunday’s scores

Williamsport won 4-3.
Lakewood lost 4-1 and lost 4-0.
Reading won 4-0.
Lehigh Valley lost 5-4.

* Jiwan James sees his hitting streak snapped at 24 games
* I don’t know what got into Vance Worley of late, but its a good thing
* Singleton has 39 BB and 40 K through 60 games. Highly impressive on both counts
* Rizzotti is still hitting .357 after 213 AB.

And…..go!

Trade Chatter, July 19-25

If you must discuss potential trades, please do it in this post and don’t clutter other discussions with off topic comments. In my opinion, the Phillies should be protecting their top 10 or so prospects during the deadline, deal for a few rentals and make a run at squeezing into the playoffs. No sense trading any of our above average prospects for 1 year rentals when we need a lot of things to go right to just make the playoffs at this point. But, discuss away.

On rotation spot designations, upside, and velocity

The most common question I get when people e-mail me is “What do you think of pitcher X” or “what is pitcher X’s upside”. I figured that this would be a good spot for me to talk a bit about how I look at pitchers, what I focus on, and why, and then to also talk a little about my theory on starting pitching designations in the majors. Hopefully this will answer some questions that people have, or just serve as a good discussion on player evaluation. So check below and we’ll get started.
