Here’s a new Phillies Discussion.

Important Dates
- December 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET): MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement expires.
Note: These dates will be used unless/until notified differently. (Note that there are many more dates to add from Spring Training through the end of the 2026 season and calendar year. I will add when I have accurate dates for them.)
Trying to resign Luis Arraez seemed like a no-brainer when we first traded for him. But now I’m not so sure. I think a lot will depend on how he performs in the postseason. Maybe he’s not comfortable hitting in the 4-hole, but thus far, he isn’t what I expected. And are we really going to roll into October with Trea in the 2-hole?

There are too many variables here with Rincon (still farther away from the big leagues as a hitter than most of us are willing to admit) and Miller to make many long-term decisions about these guys, especially since neither Arraez nor Stott are stars. My guess is that DD signs Arraez to a contract that both pays him too much money and ties him up for too many years so all we really end up talking about in 2028 is whether or not to re-sign Stott and, from my perspective, if you think Miller is healthy (not a sure thing) a potential first division player (which I think he is, if he’s healthy), you have to let Stott walk.

I’ve mentioned this previously, you can’t sign everybody. So if Arraez and Stott are not elite, you need to let them walk.

I can sort of live with Turner not being great this season – guys get old and guys have bad years. What I can’t live with is the fact that Turner has 7 (SEVEN!!!!) years left on his crummy deal – that fact is staggering. Hopefully, he rebounds and is least league average for a few more years, but it’s just a horrible contract.

I remember when this contract was signed, people were happy but I certainly wasn’t. Shortstops don’t age well. 2026 better be a blip in his career else the Phillies are not winning anything with Turner not being at least league average.

I was happy as hell lol. Thought we had a top 10 MLB player who was going to age well and might move off SS but will always be solid with the bat. Hes been a major disappointment

If he cannot move off shortstop…we is in trouble for awhile.
If he do not realize that, we in bigger trouble.
If management ‘fraid to suggest to him to move, then scuttle and abandon ship.

I’m pretty sure if you go back to the date it happened, I was very critical of the deal on here, especially since I thought there would be 3-5 dead years (far, far too many) at the end of the contract. Not in my wildest imaginings did I think there might be 7-8 dead years, but it’s now possible. Crazy.

To clarify, I went back to look at my PP comments and, at the time of the Turner deal, I lauded the player, but hated the contract.

Arraez is who he is. He is a singles hitter that doesn’t take walks or strike out. His entire profile is based on BABIP. When he gets unlucky with balls in play, he looks like a mediocre player. That is why he bounces around so much. He isn’t a star or a major difference maker. He is productive, but not special.

Not surprising. I always felt it was a defensible trade for the short run but it wasn’t likely to change any outcome for the season.
Certainly wasn’t going to make them a favorite to get to the WS.
And definitely not healthy for their long term trajectory of needing to get younger.
It’s also not as if I felt Marquez and Gair were likely super stars in the near future but they could have potentially brought us a young controllable MLB player instead of another rental.

Interesting – no Rincon or DeMartini or Graves.

Graves isn’t super surprising – it feels like he has pitched a lot. Rincon played a bunch and had a great season – maybe they want to give him a rest. Martini is a mild surprise.
Do the leagues have a say in what position players you send? If they, like Jim mentioned in his other post, are hoping to send Miller after he has played a few games -maybe the league didn’t want them sending 3 infielders? Escobar and Miller took those spots?

AFL tends not to have very advanced prospects, which is why I’m not surprised that Miller or Wood are not going.

MLB teams rarely send their top starting pitching prospects….more relief arms are sent. They do not want to take a chance on any injuries. Painter was sent two years ago to get some innings in after the rehab from TJ.

It also is very concerning that we’re back to having just 2-3 reliable relievers, and one only comes in for the 9th/save situation and another doesn’t come in at all (Mayza).

Right now after Duran lost the recent tie game, I’m not sure I see any Reliever I would trust. McFarlane maybe, but very untested and I wouldn’t put him in 8th or 9th.

The Reading lineup is legit and they put up 21 runs in their game 1 playoff win. Unfortunately Wood gave up 3 runs in 4 plus innings, I was hoping he’d do better in the playoff spotlight. He’s certainly not ready for the majors next year. I think I’d start him back at Reading and let him earn his way to AAA.
LikeLike
We need to remember that last year was Wood’s first year as a starter and he only had 10 starts last year in college and threw only 37 innings. It’s going to take a little while for him to develop his pitch repertoire and build up his stamina. I don’t see him as a future ace, but he has a chance to be a very nice mid-rotation starter down the line (or high leverage reliever if that doesn’t work out).
LikeLike
This was a bad loss. But very similar to many other recent ones. Either no offense, no BP quality effort or less than outstanding baserunning. Even though Sanchez was off he kept the game tied for over 6 innings. Guessing Hoosier Donnie forgot how effective Bowlan was when he brought him in in that 0-0 game at Arizona. At least as Ruff said he keeps his pitch count down in these situations. Guys said 3 first pitch HRs this season. That may be a record.
Also no runs for 5 innings against the Nats BP. This is a common denominator as well. Teams score on Phillies at will but not vice versa. Nats have only set an MLB record with 39 saves this season. Think where they would be if it was only 25.
Things can change but this team does not look like a factor in the playoffs if they even make it through 4 up in the loss column on the Dbacks this morning. If they finish 6 they will most likely get the Braves. So that will go quickly.

Best thing for this team in the long run….miss the play-offs to the Padres and DBacks…….the superstars will have to look into the mirror.
LikeLiked by 3 people
You may be right, but I think for different reasons. I don’t think the superstars: (a) are the biggest problem; or (b) are doing anything less than trying their hardest. Frankly, the superstars (other than Turner) have been playing pretty well – on the whole the superstars have played at a star level and sometimes a superstar level. The real problem with this team, from the rank and file position players to the secondary relievers, is the utter lack of talent and performance of these other players. That’s on DD who, in my opinion, has not been very good at identifying or developing offensive talent. To their credit, I think they know this and that’s why they are trying to overhaul their approach to hitters and hitting in the minor league system.

Romus. I think 2023 is in the distant rear-view mirror. I have mentioned other times that I think that was the best chance for this core group to have put up a WS flag. I do not see that happening at this stage. But the playoffs are now not the best team always wins. As others have showed it is who gets hot for a couple weeks at the right time. So, it is possible though unlikely. If the Phillies are one of the 6, I would think they would be the 6 in the Power Ranking of the group.
I disagree on missing the playoffs. Just a wasted season then. Get in or not the big contracts are going to remain. I do not see any of the big guys looking too long in any mirror of any kind. Just my thought. I asked Ruff last night how many of Schwarber’s 45 HRs are solo. Ruff said 35. Reason enough for him to not hit leadoff. One solo HR does little in the light that the Phillies BP almost every game gives up a run or runs.
Till they put the bats away for the winter the single biggest issue is still the BP till Duran. Plus, Duran is not very good when coming into tie games. He must be wired different than when he has the lead. They showed the stats one night of the save vs tie or trailing numbers.

The Phillies are in a really precarious position. In my mind tonight is a must win game after Sanchez is struggling. After they leave Washington, they go to New York and face a team that almost always plays them tough and in a stadium that our boys tend to struggle mightily.
On top of that, the Mets have a young upstart group of players. They have 4 first-second year starters who are capable of grinding out good starts. They also have 3-4 young position players who are playing well. Maybe not this year or next, but the Mets have potential.
Finally, the last six games are going to be killer. They play the Rays and the Brewers who have the best records in their respective leagues. Forget about catching the Cubs for home field and concentrate on Arizona and the Padres who are breathing down their necks.

Watch this be the year everything clicks in October and we rip off a championship run. Lol.
Ultimately, this is the 5th year in a row we don’t have a good bullpen and we don’t have a good outfield. Bryce gave us one elite month this year. Schwarber is Schwarber and everybody else is disappointing.
It certainly feels like big changes are needed this offseason (as it felt that way last year as well). I just don’t think we have the pieces or payroll to make it happen. One name I have wondered about though is Fernando Tatis. It would solve a couple of issues in one shot. How does the group feel about him? A strong fit, or not a strong fit because he’s just one player and we need more than one player to make this team formidable?
LikeLike
How are they going to get him with their limited prospect pool and money issues? I don’t see that happening. Think about how much worse this all would have been if DD’s wish had come true and he signed his latest “great” offensive player, Bo Bichette. I’m telling you, DD’s judgment on who is and is not a good offensive player is, for the most part, pretty shoddy. He does some things well, but not that.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I agree with you, but also, I wonder if Bo Bichette would’ve fared better as our 2B instead of a misplaced 3B. His ops+ is 97, so it’s been climbing since his horrendous start and even though his WAR is at 0.7, he would be replacing Alec Bohm who’s at -0.2. And of course, his numbers might be better hitting in CBP instead of Citi.
But I get what you’re saying. He would’ve been another long term committment under-performing.

So Pete Alonso hit a game tying HR vs the Mets in Citi Field and the fans love him so much, he got a curtain call! Now I understand that fans are angry that the Mets didn’t re-sign Alonso, but again, you can’t sign everybody. If you’re paying Soto $50M+ per year, you will have to make some hard choices. But If I was the Mets GM, I would have signed Alonso and not Bichette. I get that Bichette is younger but giving him $42M per year is ridiculous.
LikeLiked by 1 person
One of the problems/issues you have a Citi Field is that, much like the old Shea Stadium, it is really hard to hit a home run there. It’s a lot less hard if you’re Pete Alonso, but it’s a lot harder if you’re a tweener sorta power hitter like Bo Bichette. A park like that can eat a guy like Bo Bichette alive and it has. He has a .677 OPS there – a full fledged disaster. It reminds me of how the old Shea Stadium sent Bobby Murcer’s career sideways when the Yankees played there while the “new” Yankee stadium was being built (showing my age, but trust me, it was a thing!).

I don’t see Marsh as value, but I can’t say the same thing about Stott. I wouldn’t give him the “whole enchilada”, but I think he’s a steady performer and very useful in the infield. I thought his performance in 2026 has been very reliable. You usually get reliable results and plus on the defensive side of things …… besides not sure I can put up with the “elite one” sulking if we send him out! Your take?
LikeLike
Stott has his pluses…..more than steady defensively….very good on the bases…..batting can be inconsistent. Hard to say his value……then for the infield there are Miller, Escobar, Rincon, DeMartini, Spangler et al coming up within at least 3 years….maybe 4 for Spangler. Room and opportunity should be made for them.

I agree they really shouldn’t sign him, I just can’t understand what the hell happened with him. He was really good for well over a full calendar year and then just collapsed. To be clear, none of the younger position players currently ending their team control with the Phillies should be getting big, long term contracts. Bohm should be gone altogether (I don’t care about his hot streaks, at best he is average and most years he is well below average) and the team should not sign Marsh or Stott to any long term deal. Period.

They mentioned on the broadcast yesterday that Marsh is now getting a lot of non-fastballs and that he needs to adjust.
Marsh is looking like he’s headed towards a Harrison Bader type career so he’s going to have to be realistic in terms of the contract he wants. But I think he’s gone after 2027.
Bohm is gone for sure.
IF Stott wants 3/45, it shouldn’t be from the Phillies. He’s gone too.

Charlotte Varness out with an interesting article in the Athletic on Reading. The focus is on Miller, who says that his problem ultimately is more muscular than the joints in the back, which sounds more promising. (I’m a little attuned to this because of my own problem, wherein a trapped nerve in my tailbone doesn’t blow up into sciatic pain as long as I stretch my glutes regularly). Other observations include Phillies being aware they were challenging Escobar with being at AA at 21, and he discusses the adjustments he has had to make. I still think what’s happened in Venezuela since last season has weighed on him (and Alvarado).
I’ve been very encouraged by Miller’s performance so far since returning.

Miller, Rincon and DeMartini are all encouraging. Early this year I told people to pay attention to Rincon, and that has played out well. Now I’m telling you we should pay attention to DeMartini – if the fielding is as good as we are being told it is, this guy has some very real and serious upside. It’s been quite a while since we had a group of solid position prospects together in the upper minors – perhaps when Crawford, Hoskins and a few other good prospects were all together in AA, but it’s been a while. This team is starving for good, young position players.

If the Phillies want to keep their window open, they will have to depend on the young guys: Miller, Crawford, Painter in the short term and Renteria, Spangler in the long term. They won’t be able to spend their way into keeping it open.

That’s exactly right and the problem is exacerbated by the overly long contracts that become dead money. Big contracts make things tight but can be worth the price (Harper is a good example). Big, long, bad contracts kill you. Unfortunately, DD enters into more than his fair share of big, long bad contracts. I mean, think about it, would the Braves or Brewers or Dodgers or even the Yankees have ever entered into the latest Realmuto contract, Castellanos contract or Walker contract? No freaking way!

It was a bad move by the Marlins giving Stanton crazy money but an even worse move by the Yankees trading for him. There was no doubt that Stanton can hit but with his body type, he was starting to get injured and he was ticketed to be a future DH. In 9 years with the Yankees, he’s given them 11.2 WAR (not a typo). And in those 9 years, the Yankees have paid him $215M.
Now to be fair, the Yankees are also paying crazy money to Aaron Judge who has the same body type as Stanton. And Judge has been relatively healthy, until this year at age 34. Judge has only played in 66 games this season and he still has 5 years left on his deal. We’ll see how that plays out.

Kudos to Nola! He pitched like the Nola of old. He got a few fortunate bounces. Lindor for one. He smoked the ball 3 times against Nola but they were hit right at the defenders. Nola showed a lot of poise.
I know many on the PP site have been pounding on Turner. However, he almost single handedly won that game last night. He hustled into 2B to allow a run to score and he went from first to third AFTER diving back into 1B.
That accounted for two runs. He also played a really solid SS in the game. The guy goes out there every night and plays hard. Many times this year he has been lacking but last night he came up strong. Give him credit.

Trea Turner has played in 148 games. Has Turner positively impacted the Phillies in more than half those games? I think not and his -0.3 WAR backs that up. So yes, he helped the Phillies win one game but his salary dictates that he should help the Phillies win at least half of the games he plays in.

Turner needs to do something – hopefully, he can turn it around, but I have no idea.
Sadly, I think JTR is in tip-top shape – he’s just physically declining as a hitter – I’m not sure there’s much more he can do. And, by the way, his decline was predicted by most on this site – it’s what happens to catchers as they hit their mid-30s like 95 percent of the time and being a good athlete does not mean you’ll be the unicorn – it’s pretty much true for all catchers.

I’m surprised there’s no discussion on Reading’s series win. They move on to the championship series now, starting Sunday. Their lineup is really firing on all cylinders. Rincon and Miller on the left side together is very exciting. They’ll likely move up to LHV together with DeMartini, who is crushing the ball right now, moving to 2B. We could actually have several prospects at LHV next year. Escobar will likely start back at Reading because he hadn’t the promotion. Nori also will likely start at LHV with Heredia coupled with Rincones in the OF. Exciting.

I agree 100%. I wrote yesterday about being thrilled with Miller’s performance after the long layoff; he’s even stealing bases, which sounds like he has no restrictions when he’s actually playing. DeMartini finally healthy and playing enough and is hitting. I’ve been posting about Rincon since the spring. I’ve been seeing concerns about his peripheral numbers at the plate. LHV will be the big test. Unless Turner is willing to move, at least one of these guys will be traded.

The challenge with this model is it requires a person to give up some control, set their ego aside, and allow other smart and dedicated community members to contribute for the good of the greater population.

One of the biggest problems in today’s world is that opinions of other people have to be either “he’s perfect” or “he’s the worst ever”. I think it’s fair to acknowledge all the great contributions and hard work Jim and others have put into this site while offering up opinions about how things could improve if one is open to it.
Your post is trolling and ridiculous – I’d bet my full net worth more people like Jim than like you.

To get more in depth insight on prospects then you probably need to go to Steve Potter’s site. …Phillies- A Fan’s View. He will go into greater detail on each prospect on an annual basis Plus there is a daily recap of the minor league games. However comments are not accepted…it is purely informational.
https://www.philliesbaseballfan.com
Then there is Matt Winkleman’s site...Phillies Minor Thoughts….again, an in depth analysis of prospects.

Let’s please stop with the negative stuff, no one forces you to come to this site and Jim has put a tremendous amount of time into this site over the years with no financial return. There are other sites as mentioned where you can read more specifics. As for now, I’m supporting the Reading Phils as they try to win the championship and the big league Phillies as they enter the playoffs as a wildcard team, but which one is important.

A team won’t win many games when they total 6 hits (3 by Sosa) and the top of the batting order goes 1 for 18. Lindor and Soto are heating up just in time for Painter. As I wrote before, the Mets have good young starting pitching. And if it weren’t for Dr. Jimmy, I couldn’t write this drivel with hopes that someone might actually read it. Thanks for what you do, Mr. Jim.

Add JT’S 0–4 and you have all the serious money displaying their contribution to the playoffs. Urquidy did a nice job, but his season is short and over in 8. Don and I were discussing Arraez defense the other night. After hearing people’s take on here about his “D”, I was quite surprised to see his defense much better than reported. In fact, entirely adequate for sure!
Remember the rule about arguing with idiots, …”Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with their experience!”

Bohm has 86 RBIs and had 97 twice also. He’ll be harder to replace than most people realize.

No he won’t be. His RBI numbers are a direct result of where he hits in the lineup, not a sign of his relative skill.
To wit: coming into today, Bohm records an RBI in just under 27% of his plate appearances with men on base. That number goes up to just over 39% with runners in scoring position.
Josh Bell, a very middling free agent this past offseason, has numbers of 24% with men on base and 35% with men in scoring position. So for the exorbitant price of a 1 year/$7M deal with a mutual option we could have 90% of Bohm’s production.
Now imagine what you could snag with a 5 year deal.

Leave it to the Phillies to acquire relievers who have had a pretty good season and then bomb out or get hurt when they come to Philly. Leave it to the Phillies to limp into the playoffs when the 4 seed was totally doable.
The Mets almost always play the Phillies tough, and they are doing it again this season. Wonder how our boys will do when they head to Atlanta for the best of three series against their arch rival who will be licking their lips.

DD might possibly be the worst bullpen architect I’ve ever seen. The talent evaluation of the guys we sign in the offseason and then at the deadline is just brutal. I think this season he might be getting an assist from Donnie Burnout the Pitchers, but other than Duran, which was a no brainer, his track record the past few years is awful.

Matt Klentak is not far behind DD if I recall correctly, when he constructed bullpens.

It doesn’t help with the utter revulsion of watching how they’ve played the last couple weeks, but if you want a laugh:
If the Mets beat us tomorrow and just avoid being swept by the Nats in their next series, they’ll have won the season series against EVERY divisional opponent. Yes, including the Braves.

I watched the Reading game. Graves is likely the only viable MLB pitcher. He’s big, looks like he hides the ball, and the movement of his slider is odd but in a good way. Russo at best is a bulk reliever. Pan needs to control his splitter and Jimenez has the moxie to close but not sure if he was enough fastball for the big league level.
That Reading team is loaded. I think several of them will eventually make their debuts for the Phillies. Miller has the air of a starter, same with Rincon and DeMartini. I think those 3 guys have the highest probability of sticking for the Phillies. Heredia, Nori, Escobar are looking like bench guys.

Hey, relievers have value! Phillies have been running out a bullpen that lacks home grown talent. McFarlane and Kerkering have really been it.
I thought I was gonna find a few teams with a lot more home grown bullpens but quick glances at the Braves and Brewers actually didn’t show that.
However, it’d still be nice to be able to run out some competent home grown bullpen arms. Gravis, maybe Pan – that’s be nice.

So the Phillies lucked out by not facing The Miz, but Milwaukee is already limiting his innings.
The Phillies magic number is 3 with 6 games left. Philles face Brewers and Rays (all at home), DBacks face Rockies, Padres (all on the road).

90 wins still seems possible and its where I had them to start the season 90-92 to be exact.
Happy for Crawford mostly. Whenever I see him not in the LU because we’re facing a lefty I get PO’d.
Also pretty happy for Alec. I know he won’t be back and his personality doesn’t quite fit in Philly but he’s always worked hard to improve.

Bohm was worthy of being a high pick (check out his college numbers) but I think that stigma followed him around, especially when he’s more about hits and less about power. He also wasn’t athletic enough to play the OF which hurt him because his glove at 3B wasn’t that great. To his credit, he’s worked hard to become not a total liability at 3B. I wish him the best of luck elsewhere.

Anyone going to Reading tomorrow? They won Game 1 in Erie, so a win in G2 (or G3) at home would bring their first Eastern League title since 1995. Guessing Gage Wood pitches as he had G1 in the previous round a week ago.
I’m sitting first row in Box 2 between home plate/dugout with a friend; my ticket is cheaper than parking at CBP 🙂

Hmmm??????
Gage Wood….Steve Potter’s report today has listed…..”RHP Gage Wood and RHP Reese Dutton placed on development list.” https://www.philliesbaseballfan.com/post/9-20-26-minor-league-roundup
Not sure if that means he will not be available ….or maybe it is just an administrative action and he will be available.

since he would be in line to start tomorrow, I think this means they are shutting him down. Maybe Seminaris starts tomorrow with Bowker in game 3 if needed
I was hoping to see Wood pitch in this big game.

I hope you get to see Cody Bowker. He’s funky and the Phillies already moved him up 2 levels so they think Bowker can handle it. Him and Wood could both be in the mix to replace Wheeler in 2028.
