2025 Arizona Fall League

Here are some AFL updates.  Phillies participants.  Performance to date.  Game streams.

The Phillies placed 8 players on the AFL’s Surprise Suguaros.  They were added to the Surprise roster on September 10th.

  1. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Daniel Harper (AAA)
  2. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Tommy McCollum (AAA)
  3. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Eiberson Castellano (AA)
  4. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Jack Dallas (AA)
  5. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Jaydenn Estanista (AA)
  6. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: SS Aidan Miller (AAA)
  7. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: SS Carson DeMartini (AA)
  8. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: OF Dante Nori (AA)

By opening day, the Phillies had replaced Miller and DeMartini.  No reason provided for the substitutions.  Miller had been on the TIL from August 28th to September 2nd before being promoted to Lehigh Valley on September 9th where he batted .333 in 8 games with a HR, 2 doubles, 9 walks, and 7 Ks.  He played in 8 of his first 9 games with the IronPigs before sitting out the team’s final 3 games.  De Martini was placed on the 7-day IL on September 5th and activated from the IL on September 16th, 2 days after the season ended.

There are many reasons why a player might be replaced on a post-season roster.  The primary reasons would be injury or a player already having gotten enough innings/at bats during the season.  Secondary reasons might include another player who had an injury-shortened season needing the innings/at bats.  Tertiary reasons might include a player saying he would not attend (Sixto is rumored to have faked an injury to avoid the AFL) or some other activity that just pisses off the development staff and others who make the decisions.

I can’t say why they were replaced, but the new guys were added on October 6th.

  1. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: OF Dylan Campbell (AA)
  2. Assigned to Arizona Fall League: SS Bryan Rincon (A+) (he also played in the AFL last season)

Through 3 games, our guys have accumulated the following stats for the 3-0 Saguaros.

  1. Jim…AuBL starts next month….will the Phillies be sending any of their top positional prospects like Miller or Crawford, or possibly ones like Keaton Anthony , DeMartini or Rincones?

    1. I heard names a while ago but can’t remember who exactly. I don’t know if top prospects would be held back from the AFL and then sent to the ABL which is an inferior league compared to the AFL. Maybe Miller and DeMartini had an injury that kept them out of the AFL but have recovered enough to go to Australia. Maybe the reason they were removed from the AFL is still in force.

The ABL is in trouble. The once eight-team league lost Auckland Tuatara and Geelong-Korea following the 20222-23 season. After the 2024-25 season, Melbourne and Canberra gave up their licenses to field franchises. (The league owns each team so they can control spending. The league issues licenses to groups that run the actual teams.) The remaining teams are Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

There is a limit to the number of “imported” players each team can carry on its roster. Eleven, I believe, nine of whom can be from affiliated leagues in the US, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. With the reduction in the number of teams, I’m curious to see if displaced players from defunct teams take some of the roster spots that traditionally went to “imports”.

Lehigh Valley’s bench coach, Chris Adamson, is the Adelaide manager. Clearwater’s coach, Nerluis Martinez, is a first-time coach for Adelaide. Former Phillies’ farmhand, Josh Tols, is the pitching coach. INF Nikau Pouaka-Grego has already signed to play for Adelaide, but he is considered a local, as is expected future signee RHP Mitch Neunborn.

      1. Nikau has decided to not play winter ball this season. His family has moved to the United States and he will stay with them and train locally (with an emphasis on strength training) instead.

    2. Neither Aidan or Carson will play in the ABL. I know the names who will but as a courtesy to the Adelaide Giants will not announce them until they do.

  2. I’m thinking Miller came on so strong at the end of the year, they decided he didnt need the AFL. A nice start to AAA, let him take that “win” into the off season. More the psychology of the athletes mind…or he’s hurt 🙂 Your pick until it’s confirmed.

    1. I wonder why the Phils don’t send pitchers more significant to their near term plans. For guys who haven’t proven themselves against the highest level of MiLB competition like Michael Mercado, use the AFL to help figure out if he’s a reliever, a starter or a prospect at all.
