A Look at the Rosters and Player Limits

I keep track pf the organization rosters to the point of being anal about it.  Three files under Rosters and Stuff show the data I compile.  Here’s a breakdown of where the Phillies rosters are today, as I have them.  This is a fluid situation and could look different in a few days.

I guess the point of this exercise is that I have the Phillies with 15 openings on their stateside rosters today.  Sharing for those interested.

Phillies

  • 26 players on the active roster
  • 3 pitchers on the 15-day IL
  • 2 players on the 60-day Il who do not count against the 40-man roster
  • 11 players on minor league rosters

Lehigh Valley

  • 36 players on the roster including 10 from the Phillies 40-man roster
  • 3 players on the 7-day IL
  • 1 player on the 60-day IL
  • 1 player on the full season (FS) IL

Reading

  • 39 players on the roster including 1 from the Phillies 40-man roster
  • 3 players on the 7-day IL
  • 3 players on the 60-day IL
  • 2 players on the full season (FS) IL
  • 1 player on Ineligible List

Jersey Shore

  • 36 players on the roster
  • 4 players on the 60-day IL
  • 2 players on the full season (FS) IL

Clearwater

  • 33 players on the roster
  • 1 player on the 7-day IL
  • 5 players on the 60-day IL

Florida Complex League

  • 27 players on the roster
  • 1 player on the 7-day IL
  • 2 players on the 60-day IL

DSL Phillies Red

  • 39 players on the roster
  • 1 player on the 7-day IL
  • 4 players on the 60-day IL
  • 1 player on the Restricted List

DSL Phillies White

  • 34 players on the roster
  • 1 player on the 7-day IL
  • 1 player on the Restricted List

Unassigned

  • 20 total players unassigned
  • 1 IFA (possibly on the restricted list of a DSL team)
  • 13 drafted players
  • 6 UDFAs

Stateside (Lehigh, Reading, Jersey, Clearwater, FCL, Drafted and UDFA)

There is a limit of 165 players on the stateside rosters.  Players on the 60-day Injury, Full Season Injury, Ineligible, and Restricted Lists do not count against the limit.

  • 171 players on the five stateside teams
    • 36 players on the Lehigh Valley roster
    • 39 players on the Reading roster
    • 36 players on the Jersey Shore roster
    • 33 players on the Clearwater roster
    • 27 players on the Florida Complex League roster
  • 15 players on the 60-day IL
  • 5 players on the full season (FS) IL
  • 1 player on Ineligible List

So, I have 150 players counting against the 165-player limit.  I have 19 players (the draft picks and the UDFAs) needing to be assigned to rosters.  That would mean that 4 spots need to be created.  That can be done by moving players from the 60-day IL (which has a limit of 15 players) to the Full Season IL (which has no limit), assigning players directly to the Full Season IL, moving players to a Restricted List (requires cause), trading players, or releasing players.

The DSL has a player limit of 35 players per team.  So, the Phillies have a combined limit of 70 players.  They have 73 players by my count, which I trust more than the roster lists on their sites.  With 4 players on the 60-day Injury and 2 players on Restricted Lists, the DSL teams have a net of 67 players.

Transactions – Since July 1st, the Phillies have released 21 players, 19 stateside minor leaguers, one DSL player, and Whit Merrifield.  David Dahl was DFA-ed and elected free agency.  Plus 3 trades where we received 2 major league pitchers and 2 minor league pitchers for a major league pitcher, 2 minor league pitchers, and a minor league infielder.  There were also several players signed as free agents.  The releases are listed below.

  1. Thanks for the rundown. Can they just not assign some of the draft picks/UDFAs to rosters until after the season is over and spots become available?

    1. 3up, depending on how the MLR is interpreted, a case could be made for assigning within 15 days of signing or the end of the season. However, recent activity sems to indicate that they will be assigned this week, except for Dromboski who didn’t sign until August 1st.

This is a new rule change (or enforcement of an existing rule). Last year there was no urgency to assign pitchers who were drafted. Plus, there were still FCL games for the position players.

      1. Thanks Jim. My thought was as you noted that they would have no interest is assigning some of the pitchers who they will shutdown anyway.

  2. Question(s)… Why the new limits on roster sizes? Is this a cost saving thing? Seems kinda strange that billionaires are pinching pennies (comparatively). I would think the Player’s Union would chirp at limiting players.

    1. Originally, the cutbacks were driven by the “poor” franchises who didn’t want to compete with the number of affiliates and rookie teams that the “richer” franchises chose to field. So, yeah, it was a “cost-saving thing”.

They agreed on the player limit and its further reduction which made it impossible for organizations to field more than one Complex level rookie team.

I believe that MLB will continue to lower the player limit.

      1. I can see Rincones being sent again. He missed a lot of at bats this season. If they need a catcher, maybe Jordan Dissin? Among infielders, maybe Otto Kemp, Zach Arnold, Trent Farquhar, Keaton Anthony?

Among pitchers, I think they would like to send guys who didn’t get all the work they would have liked due to time on the IL. Like Pan, for instance. Otherwise, maybe Walling, Harper and Neunborn from Reading if they can afford more innings. They are required to send a pitcher who can start, that could be Neunborn.

        1. Yeah…can see that happening. I guess they will have to see who the other 4 MLB teams are in their group, and divvy up the slots between the different positions. I would like to see Dissin go or Ricketts, the one catcher who has never gone. but is now ineligible is Marchan,

          1. The Phillies will also be sending a half dozen or more players to Australia. Some can go there after spending Performance Camp (the new Instructs) in Clearwater.
