  1. Great to see Aldegheri bounce back with a nice game. Great to see Crawford finally get a few hits again. Also nice to see Ricketts continuing to put together a nice season. How is his catching and throwing? Major league level?

Garrett is the closer at CWater and he’s doing very well. Is he someone to pay attention to??

    1. Ricketts is a bit of a revelation. He wasn’t good in high A ball last year, so to see him really putting together a fine season this year at AA, with excellent plate discipline (note how often we are saying this about our minor leaguers and big leaguers this year – this is an organizational focus and it’s making all of our hitters much more dangerous – kudos to Mattingly, Long and crew for that !) and good contact skills is very encouraging. Ricketts and Marchan are looking, at least, like good back-up catcher options for the coming years (Stubbs is a great dude and a decent catcher, but his hitting is atrocious these days – and he’s hanging on by a thread and the good feelings of this club). Reports on Ricketts’ defense were good, but who knows? These days, I’m just as concerned about how good the catcher is at calling a game – this is the real brilliance of a player like Realmuto and if there’s one thing the stats dudes are not counting properly (or even at all) its the value of game-calling, which to me, has enormous value.

Aldegheri is a really nice piece. Very happy we have him and he’s a top 15 prospect in the organization right now as far as I’m concerned.

      1. Ricketts was terrific in A ball last year although probably a little old for the level. He was promoted to High A but got hurt soon after that. He came back from the injury eventually but never seemed to hit well after that. Hopefully the injury effected him well after he came back. I agree with you that calling a game in addition to catching and throwing are super key for a catcher.

    2. Caleb is very good at calling and controlling a game. His defensive focus areas to develop are receiving and throwing, not as strong an arm as others in the organization. As a lefty bat he’s got offensive upside, can also spot time at first base. I just wrote an article about Drew Garrett – a spotlight interview. He spent his first full year at complex working back from TJ – had a big arm in school – upper nineties but lacked command and control. He’s now focused on both with less velo (although that may come still) and is having success – hits a blip every now and again with walks. Has talent to advance. Sammy is a bulldog on the mound – battles and won’t back down – have liked him since we first saw him in instructs after he signed – now showing the rest of baseball what he can do. Btw Blaine Knight (as I reported) has been signed – former Orioles 3rd round pick – he will pitch in some FCL games before being assigned to either LHV or Reading.

      1. Drew Garrett is really intriguing…good size/height and if the coaches can get him to harness his control, he may be yet be another surprise pick-up by the organization.

      2. Hi Steve, do you have information about how hard Samuel A has been throwing this year? Appreciate the information!

        1. He is sitting 92-95 this season but hit 96 four times yesterday (he just told me that 🤓). The young man has pitched himself into very much being on the radar of scouts and organizations. To be honest the Phillies have always been excited about his potential.

          1. WOW that is pretty legit for a young lefty and I suspect that might tick up even more as he matures. He has been one of my favorite prospects to follow this year. Thanks again!

    3. Not taking anything away from Garrett, but Saul Teran is also the closer at Clearwater. At 92-94 mph, he might not have the velocity that Garrett has, but he is putting up some really strong numbers.
