Phillies’ Rule 5 Class, 2022

The Rule 5 Draft will be held on December 9th during the baseball’s 2022 Winter Meetings in San Diego.  Last year, the major league portion of the draft was canceled due to Manfred’s lockout.

The minor league (or Triple-A) portion of the 2021 draft was held.  The Phillies claimed RHP Matt Seelinger from San Francisco.  He was assigned to Reading until he was promoted to Lehigh Valley for 2 scoreless appearances in September.  No Phillies’ farm hands were selected during the draft.

There are 69 players in the organization who are Rule 5 eligible.  Thirty-six are first-timers and 33 are returning eligibles.  Ten of these players are protected from the draft as long as they are on the 40-man roster.

The first-timers (36) –

  • Bryson Stott, a first-time eligible but since he’s on the active roster, he’s not at risk.
  • LHP: Erubiel Armenta, Gabriel Cotto, Maikel Garrido, Josh Hendrickson, Brian Marconi, Rafael Marcano, Jordi Martinez, Erik Miller, Spencer Van Scoyoc,
  • RHP: Aidan Anderson, Albertus Barber, Starlyn Castillo, Carlos A. Francisco, Kyle Glogoski, Adam Leverett, McKinley Moore, Nicoly Pina, Dominic Pipkin, Carlo Reyes, Andrew Schultz, Brett Schulze, Eduar Segovia, Manuel Urias, Wilson  Valdez,
  • Catchers: Arturo De Freitas, Vito Friscia, Herbert Iser,
  • Infielders: Chris Cornelius, Wilfredo Flores, Sal Gozzo, Kendall Simmons, McCarthy Tatum, Rixon Wingrove,
  • Outfielders: Jeff Encarnacion, and Johan Rojas.

Maybe Schultz, Rojas, Pipkin, or Schulze draws interest.

The second-timers (22) –

  • Alec Bohm, Michael Plassmeyer, Matt Vierling, Hans Crouse, and James McArthur are second-time eligible, but as long as they are on the 40-man roster they are not at risk.
  • LHP: Keylan Killgore, Taylor Lehman, Ethan Lindow, Gabriel Yanez,
  • RHP: Carlos Betancourt, Colton Eastman, Luis Gomez, Cristian Hernandez, Tyler McKay, Jack Perkins, Tom Sutera, Victor Vargas,
  • Catchers: Jack Conley, Nick Matera,
  • Infielders: Matt Kroon, Madison Stokes,
  • Outfielders: Carlos De La Cruz.

These guys were already exposed to the draft once.  Maybe someone takes a chance on Lindow.

The three-timers (11) – these guys had already celebrated their 19th birthday when they signed their first contracts in 2017 and became eligible for the draft after four seasons.  After this third trip thru the draft, they will become free agents after the 2023 season if not on the 40-man roster.

  • Connor Brogdon, Dalton Guthrie, Nick Maton, and Damon Jones are third-time eligible, but as long as they are on the 40-man roster they are not at risk.
  • LHP: Jakob Hernandez, Jhordany Mezquita, David Parkinson, Zach Warren,
  • RHP: Matt Seelinger,
  • Infielder: Will Toffey,
  • Outfielder: Chris Sharpe.

These were exposed to the draft twice already.  Some of them are probably more likely to be non-tendered than in the organization at the time of the draft.

    1. agreed, Miller & de la Cruz plus Rojas as the most likely to be protected. Maybe another pitcher or two but I think they will take their chances with them.

      1. He probably is gone after Nov….do not see the Phillies protecting him.
        A shame, all that potential never materialized to its fullest in the Phillies org…maybe he will do better with another club.

          1. I do think Hall will be picked up by a MLB team, maybe like a Baltimore, Arizona or Kansas City….that short spurt with the Phillies after Harper went down will look good on his resume.
            Muzziotti and MacArthur may still need more seasoning in the minor leagues.

            1. I agree. I kinda hope they trade him or let him test free agency. I think there are teams that can use him. Shoot, there were times when the Phillies could have used a power lefty bat off the bench in September, but they opted to have another backup catcher sit on the bench for 5 weeks for some BS flexibility that never materialized.

              He might have been activated for a Dodgers series, they only have one lefty in their bullpen, but the Padres have four.

              McArthur and Muzziotti certainly need more time in the minors. They may not get it while still on the 40. Forty-man spots were at a premium this season.

              McArthur has an elbow injury and might be safe if exposed to the draft. He is behind Falter, Sanchez, and maybe Plassmeyer and Crouse on the forty among pitchers not named Wheeler, Nola, or Saurez. Then he’s got McGarry, Painter, and Abel coming up behind him if they haven’t passed him on internal depth charts.

              Muzziotti becomes a free agent if outrighted but might re-sign if approached. But, honestly, he’s going to be replaced by Rojas in the CF pecking order. He becomes a luxury on whom you might not want to spend a 40-man spot, I think.

  4. Miller, Rojas, De la Cruz and Schultz all should get protected and may, just maybe, Schulze. Hans Crouse is off the 40 man – if someone wants to give him a chance, that’s their problem – not impressed by him at all and he’s had injury problems. Plassmeyer and McArthur aren’t too high priority for me either. I could see a rebuilding team taking a chance on a guy like Kendall Simmons, but there won’t be interest in many of these guys.

  5. One of the lower echelon teams might take a shot on Plassmeyer. I’d like to see the Phillies bring him into ST next season.
