Phillies Affiliates’ Recap (5/20/2022)

Lehigh Valley beat up on Rochester.  Reading got dumped by Somerset.  Jersey Shore won behind Mick Abel.  And, Clearwater dropped a doubleheader getting just 3 hits in each game.

Clearwater (20-16) dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the Fort Myers Mussels, 3-1 and 3-0, collecting a total of 6 hits for both games.  Mickey Moniak started in LF in the first game and collected 2 XBH in 3 AB.

Game One: Jean Cabrera (0-1, 3.52) pitched 3.2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks.  He struck out five.  Carlos Betancourt (1.93) stranded 2 inherited runners and gave up a run in 2.1 innings on 3 hits while striking out three.  Gabriel Yanez (2.70) tossed a clean inning.

The Threshers scored a run in the seventh inning on Anthony Quirion’s solo HR (4).

The Threshers managed just 3 hits.  Mickey Moniak was activated for rehab and played left field.  He went 2-3 with a double and a triple.  Mickey did not play in the second game.

The Mussels went 5 for 5 stealing bases.  For about the fourth or fifth time this season, a team was able to pull off a successful double steal against a Phillies’ affiliate.  At least the third time I’ve seen it in a Threshers’ game.

Game Two: Jordi Martinez (0-1, 3.00) pitched four innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks.  He struck out five.  Malik Binns (1.89) pitched two innings allowing a hit and 2 walks.  Kyle Glogoski (3.00) pitched one inning and gave up a run on a solo HR.

The Threshers managed just 4 baserunners – 3 base hits by Alexeis Azuaje, Marcus Lee Sang, Arturo De Freitas, and a walk to Yhoswar Garcia.  But, a double play and 2 pickoffs of Azuaje and Garcia stunted the offense.

Lehigh Valley (22-18) beat the Rochester Red Wings, 10-2.

Michael Mariot (3-0, 3.86) pitched six innings and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks.  Zach Warren (0.00) came off the IL and tossed a clean inning with a strikeout.  Dillon Maples (2.61) pitched one inning issuing a walk.  Michael Kelly (5.40) pitched an inning and allowed one hit and struck out one.

The IronPigs scored 2 runs in the second inning on a 2-run HR (5) by Nick Maton.  They scored 4 runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Maton, a 2-run double by Jorge Bonifacio, and an RBI single by Dalton Guthrie.  They added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by Maton.  And, tacked on 3 more runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Bonifacio and RBI doubles by Guthrie and Matt Vierling.

Darick Hall (.280) went 2-5 with a double.  Maton (.254) went 4-4 with 3 doubles, a HR, and 4 RBI.  Bonifacio (.223) went 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI.  Guthrie (.275) went 2-4 with a double and RBI.

The defense turned 3 double plays.

Reading (17-20) lost to the Somerset Patriots, 6-2.

James McArthur (1-4, 6.54) pitched 5.1 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks.  Mike Adams (8.22) stranded an inherited runner and gave up a run in 1.2 innings on 2 hits and a walk.  Brian Marconi (3.86) pitched one inning and gave up a run on a solo HR.

The Phils scored a run in the fourth inning on a solo HR (8) by Logan O’Hoppe, his 5th HR in 4 games.  They tied the game briefly with a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Aldrem Corredor.  O’Hoppe (.297) went 2-4 with a HR and RBI.

Jersey Shore (13-22) beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 5-2.

Mick Abel (2-3, 4.00) pitched into the sixth inning throwing 79 pitches, 51 strikes (64.6%).  He gave up an earned run on a solo HR in the first and the defense reliever permitted an unearned run to score.  Abel surrendered 4 hits and walked one while striking out three.  Carlos Francisco (4.73) pitched an inning, walked one, and struck out two.  But, he also let one of 2 inherited runners score.  Andrew Schultz (8.71) struck out two in a clean inning.  Jonathan Hughes (0.79) earned his first save tossing two shutout innings and allowing 2 hits and a walk.

The BlueClaws scored 2 runs in the first inning on an RBI triple by Ethan Wilson and a wild pitch.  They scored twice in the fourth inning on an RBI triple by Casey Martin and an RBI single by Carlos De La Cruz.  They tacked on a run in the eighth on a fielding error.

Wilson (.223) went 2-4 with a double, triple, and RBI.  Martin (.186) went 2-4 with a double, triple, and RBI.  Tyler Carr stole his 11th base.

  1. Moniak could be the most important factor for the Phillies season. If he can claim the center field job, it will solve a big problem. I know yesterday was only Clearwater. Just tired of seeing the big club struggling to produce runs.

    1. With gas, ticket prices and team production it’s hard to justify making the trip up to see the Phils. Much rather try to go see an affiliate play being 2.5-3 hours away from all except Clearwater.

    1. As for Logan O’Hoppe….simply, in the words of M.C. Hammer – U Can’t Touch This
