The affiliates won three games last night. Lehigh Valley controlled Syracuse. Reading stymied Portland. And, Clearwater shut out Dunedin. Jersey Shore was rained out. There was a lot of solid pitching last night.
Clearwater (11-10) beat the Dunedin Blue Jays, 10-9 in ten innings.
Jhordany Martinez (1.50) pitched four innings, allowed 4 hits, walked none, and struck out one. Carlos Betancourt (1-0, 0.00) pitched three innings and allowed 2 hits and a walk while striking out three. Cam Wynne (0.00) picked up his first save. He tossed two innings, gave up 2 hits, walked none, and struck out three.
The Threshers faced one of the Blue Jays’ top prospects in Ricky Tiedemann. He was selected in the third round (91st overall) of last year’s draft. They made the most of their opportunities and scored on him twice.
The Threshers scored their 2 runs in the second inning. Arturo De Freitas led off with a single. He moved to second on a wild pitch. He was thrown out at third on Micah Yonamine’s fielder’s choice. Alexeis Azuaje doubled and put two men in scoring position. Wilfredo Flores brought them home with a 2-run single. They got one hit the rest of the way.
Flores (.343) went 2-3 with 2 RBI. Yhoswar Garcia walked and stole second for his 19th steal, but was caught stealing third for his 5th CS this season. Game time 2:25.
Lehigh Valley (16-12) beat the Syracuse Mets, 6-2.
Bailey Falter (0.00) threw 40 pitches. He threw 37 in his last start six days ago. If they are stretching him out, he ought to be ready by July at this pace. Falter threw three shutout innings. He gave up 2 hits, walked none, and struck out five. He threw 28 strikes (70%). Mark Appel (4-0, 1.88) followed with three perfect innings striking out four. If Appel is ever going to get a shot, now might be the time. Aaron Barrett (15.95) threw an inning and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits including 2 HR. Michael Kelly (5.00) gave up a hit and struck out the side in one inning. Nick Duron (2.61) pitched a perfect ninth striking out two.
The IronPigs built a 5-run lead. They opened the scoring with a run in the third on an RBI double by Nick Maton. They continued with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Drew Maggi. They scored 3 insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Will Toffey and a 2-run single by Austin Wynns. After the Mets scored 2 runs in the seventh, the ‘Pigs tacked on a run in the eighth on Wynns’ RBI single. Jorge Bonifacio threw out a runner at the plate.
Reading (9-16) beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-3.
Eric Miller (1.50) pitched two innings and gave up one run on 3 hits and a walk. He struck out three. Tyler Carr (4.50) faced 5 batters without recording an out. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits, a walk, and 2 hit batters. Mike Adams (2-0, 9.49) came in and stranded 3 inherited runners. He pitched two innings and allowed one hit. Matt Seelinger (1.26) tossed two shutout innings, allowed a hit, walked none, and struck out five. Francisco Morales (0.55) pitched two shutout innings, allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out five. Brian Marconi (3.60) picked up his 4th save with a shutout inning, one hit, and a strikeout.
The Phils scored two runs in the first on RBI singles by Aldrem Corredor and Josh Ockimey. After falling behind, they retook the lead with 2 runs in the fourth on bases-loaded walks by Ali Castillo and Jhailyn Ortiz. They tacked on a run in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by Vito Friscia. The Phils collected 8 hits and ten walks.
Jersey Shore (8-15) v. the Hudson Valley Renegades rained out. Makeup on May 8th.

The system finally seems to be turning things around and winning a few more games. Some individual performers are stepping forward (plus some veterans have stabilized Reading and LHV). Morales looks fabulous and might get bumped up to LHV at some point but certainly not yet. I agree that Appel is earning a shot finally but 40 spots are at a premium right now.

I don’t think Morales is that far away from AAA. He’s got plenty of AA innings, he’s dominating, he has top end stuff and the big league team has an immediate need. Guys like him get fast tracked.
Agree on Appel. If he’s not throwing gas and showing a plus secondary pitch then there’s no rush to add him to the 40-man.
