2022 Phuture Phillies #25 Prospect: Alexeis Azuaje

Alexis Azuaje is the Phuture Phillies’ Readers’ #25 Pick.

Alexeis Geruan Azuaje was born in Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela.  The Phillies signed Azuaje as an international free agent In July of 2018.

The 16-year-old was not immediately placed on a roster.  Azuaje made his professional debut in 2019 with the Phillies Red in the Dominican Summer League.

2019:  Azuaje played in 49 DSL games and made 198 plate appearances in his first year.  He slashed .281/.313/.470/.783 with 14 doubles, 3 triples, and 5 HRs.  From the top of the order he scored 41 runs and drove in 19.  He drew 4 walks and struck out 41 times.  He stole 13 bases in 16 attempts.

2020: pandemic

2021:  Azuaje’s stateside debut was delayed and shortened by a couple of COVID flare ups at the Complex.  He played in 19 games and made 56 plate appearances in the Complex League.  He slashed .400/.509/.867/1.376 with 6 doubles and 5 HRs.  He scored 17 runs and had 16 RBI.  He drew 4 walks and struck out 5 times.  He stole 4 bases in as many attempts.

Azuaje has played second base, shortstop, and third base, mostly second base in the DSL and more at shortstop in the FCL.

I’ve seen Azuaje at the minicamp.  I can’t get over how much bulk he has put on.  Hope it translates into more power.
