Threshers’ and Affiliates’ Recap (7/22/2021)

The Phillies promoted a few players and released four.  But, that served as little motivation as the four stateside affiliates went one and three last night.  Lehigh Valley played close but could never pull even.  Reading blew a 3-run lead in the bottom of the ninth.  Jersey Shore tied the game twice but could never forge ahead.  And, Clearwater blew their close game open with a 5-run inning.

The FCL Phillies’ game was canceled because of expected bad weather.  The DSL Phillies Red lost.  And the DSL Phillies White won on a two-hitter.

Lehigh Valley (28-40) lost to Worcester, 7-5.  Alec Bohm went 1-3.  Daniel Brito went 1-3 with a HR (1), walk, and 2 RBI in his first Triple-A game.  Jorge Bonifacio went 2-4 with a double and triple.

Reading (28-41) lost to New Hampshire, 7-6 in a walk-off.  Jack Perkins (3.56) pitched six innings and gave up one ER on 5 hits and 2 walks.  Jonathan Hennigan (0-3, 8.63) blew his second save and took the loss when in 0.1 innings he faced 5 batters, allowed 3 inherited runners to score as well as giving up a run on 2 hits and 2 walks.  Bryson Stott (.268) went 1-5 with a double and RBI.  Jack Conley (.153) went 1-5 with a 3-run HR (3).

Jersey Shore (29-40) lost to Winston-Salem, 3-2.  Dominic Pipkin (4.38) pitched 5.2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits and a walk.  Jonathan Guzman (.171) went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Jhailyn Ortiz (.250) went 2-4.

Clearwater (34-34) beat Tampa, 9-3.  Erik Miller (3.18) pitched three innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks.  He struck out five.  Luis Garcia (.227) went 0-2 with ab RBI and 3 walks.  Johan Rojas (.235) went 1-5 with an RBI.

FCL Phillies (9-6) cancelled.

DSL Phillies Red (1-6) lost to DSL Angels, 4-2.

DSL Phillies White (3-4) beat the DSL Giants Black, 1-0 on 2 hits.  Giussepe Velasquez and Douglas Mijares combined to hold the Giants to 2 hits and 1 walk over seven innings.

  1. Glad to see Daniel Brito get off to a quick start in Triple A…keep it up.
Otherwise for July 22nd, …the entire Phillies org from top- to- bottom was rather a disappointment … meh.

  2. Perkins continues his up and down season with more good games than bad ones. When he’s good, he’s been pretty good. There’s something there. Miller us at least pitching although his control isn’t good yet which limits his upside.
4 releases are just the beginning I would think.

  3. Sorry to see Austin Listi go. Hope he gets one more shot with another organization. If not … congratulations to the young man on successful college and MiLB careers. Aside from his Paul Owens Award, I’ve got to imagine his HR in the AFL all-star game has to be one of his most memorable highlights (Pete Alonso loved it).

  4. I thought Austin Listi was going to be a serviceable major leaguer for the Phillies. Could play the c orners of the infield and even the outfield, if needed. Also a RH pinchhitter. What happened?

    1. It looks like Listi was an older prospect when he got drafted at age 23. As a comparison, both Hoskins and Nola were 21 when they got drafted. Listi could have been aggressively promoted because of his age, but he reached Lehigh at age 25 (which is a shade on the older side). He didn’t play during 2020 and when he came back at age 27, he started off slow and never recovered. Then he got cut because of the incoming drafted players. The minor leagues are an unforgiving business.

    2. I hope Listi gets another chance with an AL team as he historically has been a solid hitter and that has been his calling card. Unfortunately, defense is not a strength and his defense doesn’t play at the next level. It’s all about the bat for Listi and his tough first half and age no doubt contributed to the decision to release him. Hope he gets a fresh start as a DH somewhere.

  5. Really think the Phillies need to stand down at the trade deadline. Prospects like Moniak, Ortiz, Brito and Shott are starting break through. Be smart and don’t add just to make playoffs. Build for long term.

Just wish their was some pitching pushing through but Sullivan and Dohy might be able to help the pen now. Adding a closer to a .500 team might not make sense.
