Four Williamsport Crosscutters were named to the NYPenn League Blue All Star Team – C Logan O’Hoppe, SS Kendall Simmons, SS Bryson Stott, and OF Corbin Williams. The game will be played on August 21st.
Jamari Baylor and Freddy Francisco were running the bases for the trainer after the GCL game. I hope this means that Baylor will be playing soon. Edubray Ramos, recently put on the 60-day IL, arrived today. Bailey Falter has thrown this week, next step is to throw from the mound.
Catcher Gabriel Ojeda was on hand. He signed Tuesday and will be assigned to Clearwater. He was drafted by Minnesota in 2014. Catcher Willie Estrada was also at the Complex. He played for Southeastern in 2019. He has completed his physicals and is waiting to sign.
I mentioned yesterday that it looked like Rixon Wingrove may have deked a base runner. Today, the legend grew. He was getting ready to bat and was talking to Dana Parks through the fence. Sal Agostinelli walked up and said shouldn’t you be paying attention to the game. Rix replied, Nah, it’s all okay, I got this mate. Later, I was at the fence. The Phillies trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth. Wingrove was leading off. While he was taking practice swings, he says, How you doin, mate? I replied, “I’m okay … oh? Are you new?” He looked at me like I was nuts and I quickly said, “Just kidding, I know who you are”. Then I asked him if he had deked the runner in the ninth inning yesterday. He smiled from ear to ear and said, Yeah, I was talking to him and he couldn’t understand me with my accent, mate. Then he went up and stroked a lead off double to start their 5-run rally.
Clearwater (25-32, 61-62) bounced back from a 2-hit shutout with a 12-hit, 6-0 victory over Dunedin. James McArthur (1-1, 4.76) pitched five shutout innings. The Threshers collected 12 hits. Miller (.252) went 3-4 with a run scored, triple, HR (6), and 3 RBI. Muzziotti had 3 hits. Marchan and Brito had 2 each.
Lehigh Valley (57-63) beat Louisville, 7-4. Enyel De Los Santos (4.15) went 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB. Tyler Gilbert (3.35) pitched a scoreless, one-hit inning. Austin Davis (4-1, 2.74) pitched two, one-hit innings, striking out four. Edgar Garcia (2.42) picked up his 7th save with a clean inning.

Reading (32-23, 71-51) lost to Erie, 1-0, on one-hit. Colton Eastman (1-1. 1.99) did his part. He pitched six, one-run innings allowing 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out two. Aaron Brown (3.75) followed with two scoreless innings and picked a runner off first base. Luke Williams’ lead off double in the first inning was the Phils’ only hit. The opposing pitcher was Detroit’s 2016 first round pick (9th overall), Matt Manning.
Lakewood (23-28, 52-69) beat Delmarva, 3-2. Dominic Pipkin (5.22) went five superb innings. He allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out four. Jhordany Mezquita (4.32) blew the save giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in three innings. He walked none and struck out three. Albertus Barber (3-0, 0.00) picked up the win with another scoreless inning.
The BlueClaws scored a run in the third inning on Jonathan Guzman’s RBI single. They overcame a one-run deficit with 2 runs in the ninth on Ben Pelletier’s 2-out, 2-run HR (10) for the walk off win.
Williamsport (24-36) beat Auburn, 3-2. Leonel Aponte (3.82) went 3.2 innings, gave up one run on 2 hits, walked one, and struck out five. Hsin-Chieh Lin (1-0, 2.66) got his first win with 3.1 inings of two-hit, one-run ball. He walked one and struck out three. Rafael Carvajal (3.38) picked up his second save with two clean innings, striking out five.
The Croscutters scored a run in the first inning on a ground out. They scored 2 runs in the fourth on a force out and Hunter Hearn’s RBI single.
The Cutters had 11 hits. Bryson Stott had two. Johan Rojas (.240) went 3-4 with league leading fifth triple and had an outfield assist. Corbin Williams (.215) stole his league leading 26th base.
GCL Phillies East (17-22) lost to Tigers West, 6-1. Jonas De La Cruz (1.50) opened and pitched one inning. The rehabbing RHP struck out the side. DJ Jefferson (0-1, 1.17) followed with three solid innings, allowing one run on 3 hits. He walked one and struck out two. Brendan Bell (8.49) pitched one plus inning. He left with the bases loaded and nobody out having allowed a hit, hit a batter, and walked three. Brenden Kudlinski (4.50) allowed all 3 inherited base runners to score. He pitched two innings allowing a hit and 2 walks. Andy Reyes (3.78) struck out two in his one inning.
The Phillies scored a run in the ninth inning on Curtis Mead’s solo HR (1). The Phillies had just 3 other hits, singles. They went 0-4 with RISP.
GCL Phillies West (26-13) beat the Blue Jays, 8-4. Luis Pacheco (4.85) threw three, 3-hit innings. He allowed n earned run and an unearned run, walked one, and struck out eight. One of his Ks reached on a wild pitch on strike three. He threw his FB 91-93 mph and complemented it with a curve and change. Connor Hinchliffe (1.37) pitched two shutout innings. He allowed 2 hits and a walk. Austin Crowson (3.78) pitched two, no-hit innings. He walked 2 and struck out 2 with an upper 80s FB. Dalvin Rosario (7.13) got two outs and blew the lead allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. His FB was in the low 90s.
Nicoly Pina (1-1, 4.30) entered with 2 runners on and 2 out in the eighth. He blew the batter away on 4 pitches – 93, 94, 96, 95 K looking. He remained in the game after the Phillies took the lead, and went K, BB, K, F9. He threw nothing but fastballs. They were all 93-96 mph. After the first out in the ninth, he hit the backstop, on the fly, above my head, at 95 mph. That’ll get a batter’s attention.
The Phillies tied the game with a run in the first inning on Andrick Nava’s RBI single. They took the lead in the fifth with 2 runs on Luis Rojas’ 2-run HR (2). They tied the game in the eighth on JC Smith’s RBI single and went ahead on Edgar Made’s 3-2, grand slam HR (3). As hard as Rojas HR to left was, Made easily cleared the RF fence on a ball hit even harder.
Twelve hits for the Phillies. Made (.323) went 2-5 with 2 runs scored, double, HR, 4 RBI. Rojas (.256) went 2-5 with a run scored, HR (2), 2 RBI. Wingrove (.331) went 2-4 with a double. JC Smith (.276) went 3-4 with a run scored and RBI.

The Rixon Wingrove story is great Jim. It’s one of many reasons I come here first thing upon awakening. Let’s hope he can play as well as he talks. All signs point to yes.
Neyker Ibarra, a 17 yo with DSL Red, has been impressive. He’s pitched in 12 games and started 11. He has a 3.00 ERA (not great but see what’s coming) and given up 46 hits in 48 games (wait of it…). He had 1 game where probably his dog died or found out his GF was pregnant… or something. He gave up 8 hits and 7 ERs over 3 innings. Other than that he’s given up 2 runs twice, 1 run 5 times and the rest of his outings have been goose eggs. His ERA without that one game is 1.80. His hits drop to 38 over 45 innings. He has 44 Ks to 11 BBs. He is a little height challenged. He’s listed at 5’11” but he might be still growing.
A name to remember next year, interesting stats. Thanks
Ortiz has hit in 4 of his last 15 games. He has been hitting at .098 over that stretch. Maybe I should have said NOT HITTING over that stretch.
Noticed that Kendall Simmons didn’t play for a few days.Does someone know why? Hopefully he isn’t hurt.
Rojas with another triple, looking forward to following some of these guys next year.Earlier I didn’t even bother to look at Williamsport’s box scores as they weren’t doing well at all,but seems like since Stott and Rojas are there some of the other players are hitting better too,and now they are the first one I check in the morning, besides Reading.
What’s better than a 9th inning walk off homer? Baseball, gotta love it!
Johan Rojas now with 10 triples in less than 200 PAs this season….once that ball starts to reach the base of the fence, his afterburners must be engaged in full throttle.
Do you think he was running as fast on those triple his Bryce was last night on the slam?
Probably not……Bryce had to hurry up around the bases so the Diplo concert would get off on time! 🙂
Speaking of Rojas … Fangraphs upgraded him to a 40+FV prospect on there latest Prospect Movers article. Here’s the blurb:
“Phillies CF Johan Rojas has a rough swing but he’s a 70 runner with power and is performing in the Penn League at age 19.”

The Crosscutters who were selected to the NYPL All-Star game are well deserved invites… Although I found it strange that the Crosscutters with the second lowest ERA in the NYPL had no pitchers invited? As an example Erik Miller’s stats exceed many of the invitees with the exception that he’s pitched in only 20 innings vs. many who were invited have 40+. Possibly there was a minimum innings level to be considered? One invitee had a stat line of 30 K’s, 23 BB’s and a 3.46 ERA in 54 innings. Nothing to get excited about.. There was some home town cooking for the invites in that three pitchers from the Brooklyn team made it…
I mean, if you’re going strictly by numbers then I don’t think Corbin Williams’ .541 OPS really merits an AS appearance but there are other considerations with short season leagues I guess.
Bryson Stott 8 multi hit games in last ten.. Hitting .447 in that span…
.296 overall
It is always nice when first round picks perform well right away. It is almost as if he deserved to be a top-15 pick, ha ha!
There seems to be some controversy among scouts over how he will perform and end up. It will be interesting to see if this summer plus fall instructs changes any opinions…
Loved the Rex story.
Rix*
Where does the Harper slam rate in Philly legend over the last five-ten years? I was stat following the game and when my phone refreshed I said “NFW.” Sorry I was excited and I just posted the acronym…
I hope all is well with Jim’s wife. The box score recap is late and that doesn’t happen very often. I’ll pray just a little harder.
I hope she is alright, best thoughts for Jim and his wife.
Morales with 8K and 0ER yesterday. Control remains an issue (although he hasn’t walked more than one batter in his last three appearances), but at a minimum he could wind up being a seriously live arm out of the pen.
Was thinking the same thing. Jim, I hope everything is ok. I know u don’t read the comments but I hope u know I am praying for u.
