The Hot Stove Season continues. The big week is finally upon us. Baseball’s Winter Meetings begin in Las Vegas this week.
A couple weeks ago, I would have expected a big Phillies’ announcement this week. Expectation has turned to hope. I still expect them to make announcements, just not as quickly as I would like. Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of December 10, 2018

The Hot Stove Season continues. Nothing scheduled between now and the start of the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next week. The MLBPA Executive Board Met and announced the extension of executive director Tony Clark through 2022.
This past Friday, teams announced their contract non-tenders. The Phillies had 11 arbitration eligible players and 11 pre-arb players. They non-tendered in-season additions Luis Avilan and Justin Bour. Both became free agents. Any of the arb-eligible players who decline the team’s tender will enter the arbitration process. The Phillies submitted transactions that will prepare them for the upcoming minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Players on the Phillies 40-man roster, players on the Lehigh Valley roster, and players who haven’t reached Rule 5 eligibility are exempt.
Teams are permitted to place 38 players on their active/reserve lists for their AAA affiliate. These transactions probably won’t show up in the affiliate’s transaction log nor the roster on their home page. Thirty-two transactions occurred on November 20th. Phillies Reach Agreement on Deal for Segura
Finally. One of the deals we have been expecting down in Clearwater has come to fruition. It looks like the Mariners will continue “selling high” and send SS Jean Segura to the Phillies for a package that will include SS J.P. Crawford.
The Phillies will send additional players to complete the trade, but those names haven’t been released yet. Apparently, the Phillies swung talks away from Scott Kingery, who was an early target of the Mariners.
News of an impending trade was first reported by Ken Rosenthal and later announced as completed by Jeff Passan and Bob Nightengale. I’ve expected that this deal would go down since earlier in the weekend. The only concern was who would be packaged with Crawford.
Now, we can wait and see if Patrick Corbin takes “stupid” money to NOT play in New York.
I’ll keep adding to this as more facts become known. But for now, here’s a place for you to talk about the trade.
Deal reported consummated, just waiting for Segura to waive no-trade clause.
Ryan Givish reports that Carlos Santana is part of the deal. Mariners still save $20M.
