Minor League Discussion: Week of December 3, 2018

The Phillies submitted transactions that will prepare them for the upcoming minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft.  Players on the Phillies 40-man roster, players on the Lehigh Valley roster, and players who haven’t reached Rule 5 eligibility are exempt.

Teams are permitted to place 38 players on their active/reserve lists for their AAA affiliate.  These transactions probably won’t show up in the affiliate’s transaction log nor the roster on their home page.  Thirty-two transactions occurred on November 20th.

Additions to Lehigh Valley include – Austin Bossart, Aaron Brown, Edgar Cabral, Ismael Cabrera, Grenny Cumana, Luke Leftwich, Seth McGarry, Jose Pujols, Alexis Rivero, Jose Taveras, Damek Tomscha,  Daniel Brito, Garrett Cleavinger, Jose Gomez, Alejandro Requena, Jesus Alastre, Jose Antequera, Gustavo Armas, Luis Carrasco, Luis Cedeno, Gregori Rivero, Randy Alcantara, Juan Escorcia, Oscar Marcelino, Lenin Rodriguez, Jesus Henriquez, Sandro Rosario, and Victor Sobil.

Some players who don’t require protection from the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft were moved off the IronPigs roster temporarily – Adam Haseley, Cole Irvin, Jeff Singer, and Josh Tols.

These are not final assignments.  Players will be assigned according to merit before and during spring training.

The Phillies were able to protect all but 7 players – C Nerluis Martinez, recently signed INF Ali Castillo, INF Harold Garcia who coached last season, 1B Kyle Martin, INF Emmanuel Marrero, 1B Edwin Rodriguez, and INF Drew Stankiewicz.

Strength and Conditioning started last week and runs through the 8th.  There are about 30 players here.  The guys are putting long hours from the morning until late afternoon.  I’m looking forward to sharing dinner with several of the guys Monday night.

This is the Phuture Phillies Discussion Page for Prospect and Minor League discourse. No Phillies talk here.

  1. Jim, is Moniak in town for the strength work? He seems like someone who needs to get stronger.

    1. I didn’t see him. I believe he was given the time off due to heavy, year round work the past couple years. He met or exceeded all their expectations in 2018. They are happy with his progress to date.

      Fanti…not so well so far….IP12.0…Hits19 …ER8… HR1….BB9….K8
Catcher Mitch Edwards is doing well: slash- 289/.341/.474….2 HRs…41 PAs

  3. I assume the transfers to LHV are due to Rule5 draft.
Can you remind me the minor league draft rules? I seem to remember it is fairly easy to pick players (i.e. onky small fee).

    1. The Fangraphs article is a little dated, 5 or 6 years so.

According to MLR 5 in THE OFFICIAL PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL RULES BOOK, 2018, the cost of drafting a player is $100K for the major league phase and $24K for the AAA league phase. There is no longer a AA phase. Players on the AAA roster and above are protected if they are otherwise eligible. Per my calculations, only the 7 players I listed above are subject to the AAA phase.

    1. Yeah, he just pitched his 4th strong game. After only giving up 3 hits in 3 starts (14.2 ip), he gave up 6 h in 5 ip today, but 0 bb. That’s only 3 bb in 4 starts (19.2 ip)! Still sss and not sure how good the league is but he’s looking like yet another pitching prospect to watch next year.

Btw, while our farm system is around 10th/11th overall, I’d think it’s gotta be top 5 (or top 3 even) for pitching only!

    2. Apparently Phillies have been scouting Down Under as they’ve signed several this year (Kyle Glogoski, Jan’18), Mitchell Edwards, Jun’18), Tyler Falwell, Jul’18). All 3 are putting up some of Phillies best winter league stats, all in the ABL. Falwell is 23, but Edwards (C) is 19 like Glogoski.

      1. Actually, Tyler Fallwell was born in Tucson AZ. He was drafted by KC in the 19th round of the 2016 draft out of Cochise Junior College. He was released in October of 2017 and signed by the Phillies in July of 2018 out of Indy ball. His ERA above rookie ball is high, but he has a career K/9 of 10.0.

The Phillies do have a bunch of guys in the org from Australia and New Zealand – LHP Josh Tols (who they found in Indy ball), C Mitchel Edwards, INF Curtis Mead, and C/1B Rixon Taylor-Wingrove. Kyle Glogoski is from New Zealand.

        1. Thanks Jim. As always you have great insight!
I did know about Tols but hadn’t noticed all these Aussie/NewZ signings. Other than Tols, all these guys are 18 or 19. It’s good to see the Phillies trying to tap into less-targeted markets.
For only 19, Glogoski and Edwards are doing very well in the ABL. At 18, Mead and Taylor-Wingrove are likely amongst the youngest in the league.

            1. Thanks Romus. Mitch seems to have a determination to succeed yet also realistic expectations to recognize school is an important Plan B. Also great to know baseball is in his genes. His dad’s experience in the minors (that didn’t pan out to The Show) should give added perspective and motivation too!
He’s got a strong, athletic build. Definitely will be interesting to track. We have a lot of good young Catchers in the system.
