Box Score Recap – 8/15/2016

Very little action last night with Reading off, Lakewood off, and Williamsport on their All Star break.  Drew Anderson pitched five solid innings in Clearwater’s loss to Dunedin.

The GCL Phillies swept two games from the Blue Jays that lifted them past the Jays and into first place in the GCL Northwest Division.  Home runs by Daniel Brito in the first game and Cole Stobbe in the second game helped pave the way.  Mauricio Llovera’s five shutout innings sealed the victory in game two.

Jean Carlos Valdez pitched seven shutout innings in the DSL Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/15/2016

Open Discussion: Week of August 15th

Here’s the open discussion thread for Phillies’ talk and other topics.

The Phillies completed another 4-2 week.  After dropping the first two games in Los Angeles, they won the getaway game and returned to CBP where they swept Colorado. They are off Monday, then complete their home stand with series against the Dodgers and Cardinals.  Their record stands at 56-63 (12-15 since the break).

Box Score Recap – 8/13/2016

The top two teams in the organization lost again.  Brock Stassi hit his ninth home run but also took the loss for Lehigh when he was called upon to pitch in the 13th inning.  Scott Kingery and KC Serna  provided all four of Reading’s hits.

Elniery Garcia returned to action and threw six shutout innings for Clearwater.  Kyle Martin hit his 15th  home run.  Chace Numata had two more hits and raised his average to .319.

Lakewood got six strong innings from Alberto Tirado and a balanced 14-hit attack.  “C” Randolph had 3 hits.  Four other guys had multi-hit games.

Nick Fanti had another good outing for the GCL Phillies.  The team pulled out an opportunistic 7-6 a win even though they were out hit 13-5.  Cole Stobbe had two hits. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/13/2016

Box Score Recap – 8/12/2016

Not a good night for teams above the Rookie League.  Only the GCL Phillies were able to post a win yesterday.  Both Dominican teams were rained out.

It was Sanchez Day at the Complex, and he didn’t disappoint.

Sanchez pitching August 12th

Elsewhere, Roman Quinn garnered three outfield assists, Mitch Walding hit his second “waldinger”, Chace Numata raised his average to .316 with a couple hits, Jiandido Tromp hit his seventh home run, Jose Pujols hit his 22nd home run, and the GCL Phillies ended preserved their win over the Yankees with a routine 8-2-5 double play. Box Score Recap – 8/11/2016

We got good starting pitching from Anthony Vasquez for Lehigh Valley, Brandon for Clearwater, and Luis Carrasco for the GCL Phillies.

Rain caused cancellations in Reading and one of the Dominican League games.  Rain also caused a suspension and ultimately a cancellation of game two in Williamsport.  Rain shortened the IronPigs’ game to five innings. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/11/2016

Lehigh Valley Report

The ‘Pigs are in the midst of a three game series against division leading Scranton and it is not going well, after loses in their first two games including a 10-0 drubbing last night.  The series continues tonight with one more before Lehigh Valley returns home for a 6 game home stand against Indianapolis and Pawtucket.  Currently, the ‘Pigs are four games behind division leading Scranton, however they have solidified their wild card lead of 5.5 games over Rochester by winning 22 of 32 since the all star break.

‘Pigs Prospects: JP Crawford has been struggling with the stick as of late, hitting just .197 over that time period, and has been held without an extra base hit during that same time period.  Still with his excellent batting eye, Crawford has been on base during each of the last 9 games. For Lehigh Valley, Crawford is at .258/.348/.333 in 264AB with 3HR and 25RBI.  In my opinion, no reason at all to rush Crawford.

Nick Williams currently sits with his lowest batting average over the last 2 months and is in the midst of a 6-38 slump over the last 10 games.  On the year, WIlliams is at .277/.308/.455 in 411AB with 12HR 57RBI and 5SB.  He hit the 100 strike out last week.

Jesmuel Valentin has been struggling over the last month, both prior to, and since his callup from Reading. In his last 24 games, Valentin is hitting just .182, and is at .269/.340/.391 between Reading and Lehigh Valley this year.

Next Week: Lively, Knapp

News and Notes–Lehigh Valley has been shutout the fewest times in the IL(6)

–Over his last 6 IL starts, Anthony Vasquez is 2-0 with a 2.58 ERA and 5 quality starts.

–OF Cedric Hunter continues to play very well for Lehigh Valley and is hitting .326 over his last 13 games with 3HR and 12RBI

–Over his last 14 outings, RP Frank Herrmann has allowed just 1ER in 15.2IP, and has picked up 3 wins.

–The Lehigh Valley pitching staff ranks 2nd in the IL in ERA at 3.25, and over the last 2 months, the bullpen is a combined 13-5, with 20SV and a 1.93ERA.

–Cam Perkins has had multi hit games in three of his last 4 games,. including reaching base all 4 times on Tuesday. Over his last 26 games, Perkins is hitting .316.

–P Phil Klein recorded a career high 10 strikeouts in his start on Tuesday and struck out the last 7 hitters he faced.

–With his win over Rochester last Sunday, in which he gave up just a lone run in 6.1IP, Ben Lively became the first minor league pitcher to hit 14 wins this year.

–Overall, Phillies minor league clubs are 384-279 this year, good for 2nd best winning % in minor league baseball.

–Darin Ruf has been extremely solid for Lehigh Valley, hitting .298 with 13HR and 45RBI over his last 65 games.

–Over his last 9 games, RP Colt Murray has just a 1.54ERA and has struck out 12 in 11.2IP.

–INF Carlos ALonso announced his retirement and has taken a position on the WIlliamsport coaching staff Continue reading Lehigh Valley Report

Box Score Recap – 8/10/2016

Lakewood and the two Dominican summer league teams were the only winners in the organization yesterday.  Clearwater and Williamsport were postponed due to wet grounds. I guess this shouldn’t be a surprise due to their close proximity (jk).

The GCL wasted a fine effort from starter Will Stewart.   Reliever Reiwal Gonzalez had a dominant outing in the DSL. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/10/2016

The 20-80 Scouting Scale or Why the Phillies DON’T Have a #1 and Maybe Not Even a #2

(This article was originally posted as the major portion of an open discussion published during the off-season following the 2015 season.  I have intended to publish it separately so that I could add it to the site’s menu.  I felt it a little presumptive to add it to James’ Primer, but there is really no better spot for it.  Anyway, there have been a few references to it the past week or two, so I felt I should get it published and linked for reference.  It is almost word-for-word with the original discussion which I have placed here.  You may find the comments to the original interesting.  This article will go on the Primer drop down menu.)

I know this could be viewed as a patently absurd statement.   Continue reading The 20-80 Scouting Scale or Why the Phillies DON’T Have a #1 and Maybe Not Even a #2
