Box Score Recap

Clean sweep for the organization’s affiliates last night.  The big team won, too!

Lehigh Valley (16-17) Beat Columbus, 2-1, behind another solid performance from Alec Asher (3-0, 0.40).  He allowed one run and pitched into the seventh inning.  Edubray Ramos stranded 2 inherited runners, and Edward Mujica picked up his 9th save.  Taylor Featherston had 3 hits.  Nick Williams’ 2-run home run accounted for their scoring.

  • Asher – 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR.
  • Ramos – 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP.
  • Mujica – 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.
  • Featherston (.309) went 3-4 with a double.
  • Williams (.280) went 1-4 with a HR (3) and 2 RBI.
  • Joseph (.347) went 1-4.
  • Knapp (.236) went 1-4.
  • Joseph (4) and Featherston (8) committed errors.

Reading (23-11) Beat Trenton, 3-0, behind seven innings of 2-hit pitching by Ricardo Pinto (1-1, 3.12).  Hoby Milner earned his first save.  Dylan Cozens hit his 10th home run.

  • Pinto – 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.
  • Pinto had a no-hitter through 6.0 innings.
  • Milner – 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.
  • Quinn (.256) went 0-4 with a BB.
  • Crawford (.254) went 1-5.
  • Alfaro (.418) went 0-4.
  • Cozens (.274) went 1-3 with a HR (10), BB, and RBI.
  • Hoskins (.238) went 1-4 with a double.
  • Cozens (9) stole a base.
  • Quinn had an outfield assist.

Clearwater (22-11) beat Dunedin, 5-2.  Matt Imhof (4-1, 3.58) allowed 2 runs (one unearned) in 5.0 innings.  Mario Hollands pitched 2.0 scoreless rehab innings, striking out four of six batters.  Alexis Rivero earned his third save.  Cord Sandberg had 2 RBI.  Andrew Pullin had 2 hits and an outfield assist at home.

Matt Imhof is an enigma to me.  I watched him struggle to throw strikes for five innings, and looked up and he has allowed only one earned run on 3 hits.  He walked 4 batters (3 on 4 pitches), yet struck out 3 of the last 4 batters he faced.  He got no swinging strikes in the first two innings, but 3 of his 4 strike outs were swinging, two at fastballs if you want to call 85 and 87 mph pitches fastballs.  Through his first 3 innings, he had thrown as many balls as strikes (23).  He threw only one pitch that reached 90 mph.  He entered the game second in the league with 20 walks allowed, and after 4 more tonight he might lead the league. Somehow he has a 4-1 record and only a 3.58 ERA.

  • Imhof – 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 84 pitches/45 strikes, FB 87-89, t90 mph.
  • He was assessed a ball for a pitch clock violation. Yeah, they do that in the minors.
  • Hockenberry – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

Mario Hollands recorded 4 strike outs in his two-inning rehab appearance.  All 4 strike outs came swinging at fastballs.  His off speed pitches were 82-84 mph but he lacked command. Most ran up-and-away from the batters.  He is likely to see one more appearance down here before continuing his rehab in Reading.

  • Hollands – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 28 pitches/16 strikes, FB 90-92 mph.
  • Rivero – 1.0, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.
  • The four Threshers’ pitchers combined to strike out 10 Blue Jays.

Kingery returned to the top of the line up, his arm still bandaged where he was struck by a pitched ball Monday night by these same Blue Jays.  He reached base 4 times and scored twice.  Andrew Pullin played in his second game since returning and reached on base hits his first two at bats.  He was retired on a hard hit line drive into the pitchers stomach his third at bat.  He also teamed up with Kingery to nail a runner at home plate.  Struggling Kyle Martin was moved to the seventh slot in the line up.  Pullin batted clean up.

  • Kingery (.261) went 2-3 with a double, 2 walks, and an RBI.
  • Sandberg (.257) went 1-4 with a triple, 2 RBI, and 3 K.
  • Tocci (.248) went 1-4.
  • Pullin (.286) went 2-4 with a double.
  • Walding (.263) went 1-4 with an RBI (25).
  • Martin (.261) went 1-4 with an RBI (25).
  • Lino (.186) went 2-4 with a double.

There was some excitement on the base paths during the game, too.

  • Imhof got a double play to end the first with runners on the corners, an inning where he threw 5 strikes in 15 pitches.
  • With 2 outs and runners on the corners in the fourth, Imhof threw a pickoff attempt over Kyle Martin’s head to allow a run to score and the tying run to reach second.
  • In the fifth, Gabriel Lino threw out the Jays speedy Richard Urena on a steal attempt that probably should not have been attempted, Lino blocked a pitch in the dirt and it didn’t roll very far.
  • In the third inning, Kyle Martin had moved up on a similar play, but the throw was high and late, and after briefly being called a stolen base, it was ruled a wild pitch.
  • In the sixth the Jays’ third base coach tried to score Jason Leblebijian from first on a single to left when Pullin’s throw went to the cutoff man Kingery instead of to third. The ever alert Kingery gunned the runner down at the plate.  Silly coach.  Leblebijian rebounded from his 0-5 with 5 K Wednesday with 2 hits and a walk Thursday.)

Lakewood (12-20) Beat  West Virginia, 6-4.  Shane Watson was his own undoing with 3 walks, 3 hit batters, and his own fielding error.  Two of the hit batters and the error scored in a one-hit fifth inning before he was relieved.  Jacob Waguespack picked up his third win and Luis Morales got his first save.  Jan Hernandez hit his third home run.  Deivi Grullon had 2 RBI.

  • Watson – 4.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 3 HBP.
  • Watson also picked a runner off first.
  • Waguespack – 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 inherited runner stranded.
  • Morales – 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.
  • Marrero (.320) went 2-4 with a double and BB.
  • Tobias (.325) went 1-5.
  • Pujols (.279) went 1-3 with a double, BB, and RBI (25).
  • Grullon (.306) went 1-2 with a double, BB, and 2 RBI.
  • Hernandez (.263) went 1-4 with a HR (3) and RBI.
  • Hayden (.271) went 2-4.
  • 11 BlueClaws struck out (Tromp 3 times).

Extra Innings –

  • Before the game, the broadcasters told me that Cody Asche might start his rehab and be in the Threshers line up this weekend.  Games in Tampa on Friday and Saturday, double header in Clearwater on Sunday.  They go on the road for four days to St. Lucie after that.

  1. Nice to Kingery back 10 doubles 2 walks , Rivero Era is nice . Featherston 3 for 4 and another HR by Cozens wow is he hot. Williams also going long Pujols another double. Best of All Pinto no hitter 4 six nice to hear. Yes Asche back yea throw in LF please .

  2. Bad miss on Gueller but the silver lining is that was a pretty weak draft and nobody drafted after has become much. Hopefully Watson can become something but that doesn’t look good

  3. Asher, that bum, gives up a run on a HR no less and increased his ERA to 0.4. Ramos hasn’t given up a run yet. Hoby Milner hasn’t given up a run (in AA) either.

    Pujols has hit in 12 straight games and has been on base in 15 straight. He’s raised his average in that time from .242 to .279. That is pretty nice indeed. I’m waiting for pitchers to adjust to him and then see how he readjusts. If he can do that, he’ll move up the prospect rankings quickly. He’s done enough to get a lot of conversation going though.

    Everyone in the LKW lineup had a hit. If they can get the pitching straightened out, they could be a very good team. Releasing Gueller was a step 1. Hopefully, some replacements are coming, and not just from the draft.

  4. Well, we now know what happened to that bat Tommy Joseph loaned to Darin Ruf all those years ago … 😉

    Are there spray charts available for Cozens this year? I’d love to see if this power surge is the result of pulling everything, or if he’s using the entire field. Either way, it’s great to see! He should be in line for some national love on BA’s hot sheet today.

        1. MLB will exploit that no doubt and frustrate you right out of the league. We’ve seen this for years now with Howard and we are seeing Franco have issues with being too pull happy.

    2. Was at the Reading game last night and Cozens power is legit hit a lazer blast HR to LEFT FIELD took another ball to the warning track in left and another to the wall in right. Wind was blowing in for the game. I found myself thinking this is a guy you look forward to seeing. Don’t go to the restroom when he is up! Also Pinto threw majority of his off speed stuff. In fairness that Thunder lineup was pretty weak too.

      1. As you say , that Thunder lineup is not hitting much average/OBP wise, but their top two in the lineup…Wade and Fowler ..are considered to be top ten prospects in the Yankee system and Pinto was able to handle them well..

  7. Cannot seem to get totally on board with Matt Imhof.
    His velo looks like it will be high 80s from here on out, so expectations have to be pretty tepid.

    2. When Imhof was drafted he was suppose to be a “projectable” lefty who would add a couple of mph to the fastball. At this point, a 88-90 mph fastball with poor command sounds like the projections of a lonely guy at closing time with 7 or 8 beers into him.

    1. Not sure it works that easy administratively for Ruf to be sent down.
      Does he have any options left?
      His MLB contract may dictate something different.
      He may have to be DFAed or released first and given a 10 day window to see if claimed by any other team before he goes to AAA.
      But get your point….that is, lets get T.J. up and play him.

      2. They can’t bring up Joseph to get as few AB as Ruf has been getting. Joseph also still needs work on his fielding. He should come up when Howard is released or benched.

        1. Agreed. Joseph needs to play. If he can play everyday at big league level, fine. But we know that won’t happen until later on this season. Keep him at LHV and keep getting ABs. His development is the only thing that matters, not the first base situation with the Phillies. If he doesn’t get up until July/August timeframe then his development doesn’t get interrupted. He still needs to improve and the LHV situation is the best for him short term. If he is a real MLB player, he will still be at that level later on this summer. No need to rush the process.

            1. Just got into a debate about Howard. Assuming he “plays” the full year which is more likely, a 25 homer season or hit .220? He has 8 Hrs in 115 PAs and batting .176

    2. I don’t think they need to be overprotective of Joseph. He’ll be 25 in July, in our system since ’12. Don’t think he’ll crumble to pieces if he doesn’t mash right away.

  10. This emergence by Cozens is really exciting. By the end of 2017 we could have the following order:
    1. Herrera 2. Crawford 3. Franco 4. Alfaro 5. Cozens 6. Williams 7. Joseph 8. Kingery
    And by 2018 a rotation of:
    1. Puk 2. VV 3. Nola 4. Thompson 5. Eflin

    That team would compete for a wild card at the very least.

      1. Hoskins I think will be ready sometime in 2018, if he can beat out TJ. Knapp is also in the discussion for 1b, but I think between those three whoever can mash the most Hr and doubles and bat above .280 will get that job, and right now TJ looks most capable. Quinn I think will end up being traded as he is unlikely to beat out Hererra at this point and doesn’t have the power we need for a corner OF spot. We could also see Quinn in a rotation with Cozens/Herrera/Williams and would be extremely valuable as a defensive replacement/pinch runner late in games he doesn’t start. Could also imagine Knapp catching one or two games a week and playing one or two at first and maybe even one or two in left. If he can get the bat rolling again I could see him as a valuable guy that gets his at bats all over the lineup and plays multiple positions, and he’s bull pen proof as a pinch hitter from either side of the plate. Galvis, Quinn and Knapp sure would make for the beginnings of a super bench.

      1. rocco…an urban myth….Cozens only played football his senior year at Chaparral. His dad did not want him playing football until then. So he lost the summer before his senior to football. And then the fall season.

      1. He could be a fine 4th or 5th outfielder no doubt. But at this point he doesn’t have the upside of Williams Herrera Quinn or cozens. He will be battling the likes of Perkins and Tocci for a bench role

        1. Disagree. Quinn is behind Altherr. You can argue Cozens now because he’s smoking but I’m impressed with Altherr’s improvement from 2 yrs ago to last year.

        2. IMO, Altherr replace Bourjos,,,,,he is the best defensive OFer, between Williams, Cozens and Quinn…and could be better than .Herrera right now, who seems to be close to getting , what ‘Steve Sax’ had with throwing, a phobia obsession with grounders.

Considering Altherr has actually played in the majors already and showed some nice power to go along with superb defense while not looking lost at the plate I’d put him over both Quinn and Cozens. He can play all three OF spots and has made some nice improvements to his game over the last 2/3 years.

    1. Knapp could still work on his catching without being the guy at AAA. #1 catchers rarely start more than 75-80% of games.

      1. Completely agree. Knapp should be playing catcher, first base, and left field. His bat should always be in the lineup being that it’s from both sides.

        1. knapp and altherr value is more on their floors than ceiling – Altherr with his ability to play all 3 OF and Knapp ability to hit at C, 1B and LF. if the Phils have both Altherr and Knapp in the bench, they can just add another OF and MI and can carry an extra RP.

          1. When did Knapp become a LF? Or a first baseman for that matter. In 3+ years with the organization, Knapp has started 6 games at first base, all with Glendale in the AFL. It’s one thing to want him to get time at other positions, but to assume value at those positions before he actually plays them is premature.

  14. The beauty of building this roster is that while you’ll have your starting 8, depth will keep everybody fresh/healthier than riding the same lineup into the ground every game. Guys like Knapp and Altherr would play huge roles even in utility.

    david allen (new jersey): Thoughts Tommy Joseph getting the call? Who do you think has the better shot for MLB success hoskins or joseph?

    Josh Norris: I am so happy for Tommy Joseph. After all the concussions and other injuries that hampered him after the trade, I was skeptical he’d ever get the call. Now that he’s there, I’d bet he provides the Phillies a nice bit of righthanded power.

    Rodrick (thedoldrums): I’ve been on the Dylan Cozens bandwagon for a few years now, and he’s really putting all that talent to use consistently. He’ll probably be the first 10-10 guy of the season–NO ONE would have predicted that! So…what kind of ceiling might he have?

    Josh Norris: Was talking with a scout about Cozens last night while trying to put together the list for the Hot Sheet. It always surprises me how young he is. Seems like he’s been around for ages but he’s still just 21 years old. He’s got the power and speed combo that everyone drools over, and last year the Phillies had him focus more on average than power. The scout who saw him this year says the approach has gotten better and, if everything goes right, he could be an average big leaguer.

    Patty G Billz b Money (Philly): Yo – Mark Appel… what do YOU think is a realistic ceiling now?

    Josh Norris: Being that you’re from Philly, I appreciate the “Yo” to begin your question. I think he’s probably best suited as a reliever who can let the fastball and slider rip for one inning at a time.

      1. Tom what do you think scouts said about Herrrera that texas let go? Its a opinion. They don’t know how much someone can improve Cozens has power, size. great arm. can run. So he has a lot of tools. I just worry that he wont hit for average and walk enough.

        1. Herrera was ranked the highest in the Rangers at 20th after the 2014 season….I believe that was the highest he ever got. He was ranked 27th prior to 2012.
