Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

After a four game winning streak, Lehigh Valley has now lost two in a row, but are still trending upward having won 18 of their last 28 games and have the best record in the IL since June 14th.  The roster shake up that will come with bodies needed in Philadelphia and likely coming from both Reading and Texas will make the roster look significantly different for the seasons’s final month than it does today.  On the year, the ‘Pigs are 47-58 and sit in 4th place of the Northern Division of the International League, 10.5 games behind division leading Scranton. The ‘Pigs are home against Norfolk this weekend before hitting the road early next week in Toledo.

News and Notes: The ‘Pigs lead the league in caught stealing %, having thrown out over 36% of would be base stealers.

–Russ Canzler, who has been on the DL with an oblique strain has begun baseball activities.

Since May 14th, SP Jason Berken ranks 3rd in the league in ERA (2.42).  This time span includes 9 starts and 4 relief appearances.

–RP Adam Loewen has retired 28 of the last 32 batters he has faced and has help the oppposition scoreless in his last 9 appearances, during which he earned 5 saves.  My hope is that Loewen sees the Phillies roster shortly.

–In his last 3 starts, SP Anthony Vasquez is 3-0 with an 0.82ERA, allowing just 2ER in 22IP.

‘Pigs prospects: Aaron Altherr has been outstanding for Lehigh Valley, hitting for average, power, running the bases well and playing an excellent OF.  Since his promotion to AAA, he leads the league in RBI’s and is 4th in runs, and while hitting over .300, has not had back to back games without a hit.  Of his 6 homers, 5 either tied the game or put Lehigh Valley ahead.  Between AA and AAA, Altherr is hitting .323 over the last 6 weeks.

Severino Gonzalez has been presumably negatively impacted by the yo-yo between Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley that is likely to continue throughout the rest of the season.  In his last 8 IL starts, Gonzalez has gone 0-4 with a 5.12ERA.  Gonzalez needs a full, stable year somewhere if there is a chance of progress moving forward.

Nefi Ogando has thrown very well for Lehigh Valley, holding the opposition scoreless in 9 of his 10 games with the ‘Pigs.

Next Week: Biddle, Lino, Buchanan

‘Pigs League Leaders, Hitting: Chase D’Arnaud is 2nd in runs(57); Chris McGuinness is 4th in walks (48) and has the 8th worst avg (.225); Jordan Danks has the 9th most striekouts (103); Tyler Henson is 9th in SB’s (22)

Pitching:Cesar Jiminez is 7th in games (37); Phillippe Aumont is 6th in walks (still)

Transactions: Comings: INF KC Serna (Reading); C Logan Moore (Reading)

Goings: INF Russ Canzler (DL); P Chris Leroux (Reading)

Probables: Thur: TBD; Fri: Buchanan; Sat: Berken; Sun: Vasquez

  1. Are you excited for next year in Lehigh Valley? Should be the most talented team maybe in Lehigh’s history.
