Around the System, RP, Lehigh Valley and Reading

Not a whole lot to be excited about when discussing relief pitchers at the upper reaches of the organization.  In fact, almost no reason to be excited.  That will come when discussing Clearwater and Lakewood.

Lehigh Valley

Jake Diekman, 28, Phils 30th round pick in 2007; Sent down Friday, Diekman pitched s scoreless frame in his first outing, yielding both a base hit and a walk.

Seth Rosin, 26, Acquired from San Francisco in 2012; 22 games, 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA; 2 saves; 30.2IP 32H 6BB 21K; .254 opp avg; 1.24 WHIP;1.39 GO/AO; 1.8BB/6.2K per 9; .302vs. LH, .219 vs. RH, .250 over last 30 days; .268 with RISP.  Rosin has thrown very well this year and has likely past Hector Neris as the likely RHP to come up if need be.

Hector Neris, 26, SIgned as a free agent in 2009; 19 games; 1-3 with 4.50ERA; 1/3 saves; 24IP 28H 17BB 26K; .292 opp avg; 1.88 WHIP; 1.14 GO/AO; 6.4BB/9.8K per 9; .395 vs. LH, .224 vs. RH, .234 opp avg last Month; .294 with RISP.  Neris has pitched very poorly with an astronomical walk rate combined with getting crushed by left handed hitters.

Nick Hill, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2015; 13 games, 0-3 with a 3.80ERA between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 2 saves; 21.2IP 22H 11BB 14K; .289 opp avg; 1.55 WHIP; 0.95 GO/AO; 4.6BB/5.8K per 9; .389 vs. LH,.285 vs RH, .286 with RISP.  Hill has been nothing more than an innings eater for Lehigh Valley.  Very inconsistent.

Cesar Jiminez, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2013; 22 games, 1-3 with a 2.70ERA; 4 saves; 26.2IP 26H 8BB 16K; .255 opp avg; 1.28WHIP; 0.71 GO/AO; 2.7BB/5.4K per 9; .286 vs. LH,.243 vs. RH, .294 opp avg over last 30 days; .300 with RISP.  After a phenomenal start to the season, Jiminez has struggled a bit as of late, like most LH relief pitchers in the top half of the organization.

Tyler Knigge, 26, Phils 12th round pick in 2010; 18 games, 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA between Lehigh Valley and Reading; 1/3 saves; 28IP 32H 10BB 17K; .308 opp avg; 1.50 WHIP; 1.18 GO/AO; 3.2BB/5.5K per 9; 4.50 ERA for Lehigh Valley (16 games); .406 vs. LH, .300 vs. RH, .303 opp avg last 30 days.  Knigge has been flat out getting crushed for the large majority of the year.

Chris Leroux, 31, Acquired from White Sox in 2015; 4 games (2 starts) for Lehigh Valley; 0-2 with a 3.09ERA; 11.2IP 14H 4BB 11K; .286 opp avg; 1.54 WHIP; 3.80 GO/AO.  A live arm acquired three weeks ago.

Reading

Adam Loewen, 31, Signed as a free agent in 2014; 16 games, 2-2 with a 2.45ERA between Lehigh Valley and Reading; 25.2IP 23H 23BB 20K; .253 opp avg; 1.79 WHIP; 0.93 GO/AO; 8.1BB/7.0K per 9; 5 games with Reading, 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 8.1IP 5H 3BB 7K.  Loewen started the year with Lehigh Valley and simply couldn’t find the plate.  He was demoted to Reading and seems to be coming around but needs to regain confidence, that much more difficult when you are a 31 year old reclamation project.

Hoby Milner, 24, Phils 7th round pick in 2012; 9 games, 1-1 with a 1.37ERA; 19.2IP 14H 6BB 10K; .206 opp avg; 1.02 WHIP; 0.42 GO/AO; 2.7BB/4.6K per 9; .111 vs. LH; .268 vs. RH; .222 with RISP. A starter until this season, Milner missed the first month of the season on the DL, but has been very well since coming off.  Frankly, I would like to see him in the Lehigh Valley rotation as opposed to what they run out there.

Colton Murray, 25, Phils 13th round pick in 2011; 25 games, 2-2 with a 3.98ERA and 2 saves between Lehigh Valley and Reading; 31.2IP 23H 20BB 32K; .198 opp avg; 1.36 WHIP; 0.50 GO/AO; 5.7BB/9.1K per 9; 5 games for Reading, 0-0 with a 4.26ERA; 6.1IP 6H 2BB 7K; Murray was sent down to Reading two weeks ago to find the plate.  Hitters were hitting just .185 against him in Lehigh Valley, but allowing 6.4 walks per 9 innings allowed the opposition to have no real need to hit.

Stephen Shackleford, 26, Signed as a free agent in 2015; 20 games, 2-1with a 3.48ERA; 12 saves; 20.2IP 19H 10BB 24K; .241 opp avg; 1.40 WHIP; 0.61 GO/AO; 4.4BB/10.5K per 9; .333 vs. LH, .150 vs. RH, .279 opp avg last 30 days; .296 with RISP.  SHackleford has pitched fairly well, albeit with more walks than you want.

Reinier Roibal, 26, Signed as a free agent in 2015; 11 games (2 starts) between Clearwater and Reading; 3-2 with a 1.35ERA; 26.2IP 22H 7BB 23K; .232 opp avg; 1.09 WHIP; 0.80 GO/AO; 2.4BB/7.8K per 9; 5 games for Reading, 2-1 with a 1.20 ERA.  2015’s version of Luis Garcia?

Nefi Ogando, 26, Acquired from Boston in 2013; 17 games, 2-2 with a 3.04ERA; 2/6 saves; 26.2IP 21H 14BB 28K;.219 opp avg; 1.31 WHIP; 0.78 GO/AO; 4.7BB/9.4K per 9; .268 vs. LH, .182 vs. RH, .229 over last 30 days, .143 with RISP. Ogando has thrown well with the same control issues had by many.  When considering expectations for Ogando, always remember, he was acquired for John McDonald.  Would like to see him in Lehigh Valley shortly.

Lee Ridenhour, 25, Phils 16th round pick in 2013; 15 games, 0-0 with a 4.62ERA between Clearwater and Reading; 25.1IP 27H 6BB 16K; .281 opp avg; 1.30 WHIP; 1.75 GO/AO; 2.1BB/5.7K per 9; 10 games for Reading, 0-0 with a 6.43ERA, .309 opp avg.  Ridenhour was one of the first to receive a promotion this year and has struggled for Reading, although his last two outings have been good ones.

DL: Ethan Stewart, Ryan O’Sullivan

  1. I was pretty shocked when the reader’s Top 30 voted him at #31. The players just behind him:

    Jiandido Tromp
    Joely Rodriguez
    Rhys Hoskins
    Brandon Leibrandt
    Willians Astudillo

  2. Roebal and Vasquez may be going through auditions to fill starter/reliever roles for the rest of this season, IMO. Finding failed starting pitchers and seeking to turn them into relievers is a good way to go….Etc.
