A look at the performance of the systems outfielders through the first 5 weeks of the season. Some disappointment, but significant areas to be excited about. Two moves I would make before the end of the month: Aaron Altherr to Lehigh Valley and Carlos Tocci to Clearwater.
Lehigh Valley
Brian Bogusevic, 31, SIgned as a free agent in 2015; .333/.401/.439 in 132 AB’s; 2HR 13RBI; 4SB; 10%BB/14%K rates; .270 vs LHP; .358 vs. RHP; .367 in May. 29 games in the OF without an error; 3 OF assists; Bogusevic has been the best OF in Lehigh Valley this year, by a wide margin.
Jordan Danks, 28, SIgned as a free agent in 2015; .279/.331/.333 in 111AB’s; 1HR 15RBI; 1SB; 8%BB/20%K rates; .313 vs. LHP, .266 vs. RHP; .314 in last 10 games; 29 games in the OF without an error; 1 assist; Solid numbers thus far.
Cody Asche, 24, Phils 4th round pick in 2011; .269/.346/.269 in 26AB’s; 0HR 2RBI; 5 games in the OF with 1 error; Too early for comment.
Domonic Brown, 27, Phils 20th round pick in 2006; .250/.298/.304 in 112AB’s; 0HR 14RBI; 5SB; 3%bb/14%k rates; .314 vs. LHP; .221 vs. RHP; .279 in last 10 games. 24 games in the OF with 2 errors (.983); 1 OF assist. Brown in starting to play a bit better, but a .304 SLG%? Come on.
Reading
Aaron Altherr, 24, Phils 9th round pick in 2009; .279/.356/.500 in 104 AB’s; 4HR 20RBI; 4SB; 11%BB/14%K rates; .325 in last 10 games. 25 games in the OF without an error; 3 OF assists; Altherr has been consistent and significantly improved his BB/K rates, an issue that has plagued him in the past. I would like to see him in Lehigh Valley come June.
Cameron Perkins, 24, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .222/.293/.343 in 108AB’s; 2HR 13RBI; 2SB; 7%BB/10%K rates; .241 vs. LHP; .224 vs. RHP; .200 last 10 games; 28 games in the OF with 1 error (.986); 8 OF assists; Perkins has struggled with the stick since mid season last year. Don’t run on him.
Brian Pointer, 23, Phils 28th round pick in 2010; .203/.346/.422 in 64AB’s; 4HR 8RBI; 1SB; 17%BB/31%K rates; 0-9 with 7K’s against LHP; .236 vs. RHP. .241 in May; 17 games in the OF with 1 error; (.969). Literally lost against LHP, has provided some power against RHP.
Roman Quinn, 22, Phils 2nd round pick in 2011; .333/.385/.492 in 132AB’s; 2HR 9RBI; 19/24SB; 8%BB/22%K rates; .286 vs. LHP; .337 vs. RHP; .316 in May; 34 games in the OF with 3 errors (.963); 3 OF assists; What more do you want?? Zilch.
DL: Kelly Dugan
Clearwater
Aaron Brown, 22, Phils 3rd round pick in 2014; .220/.276/.385 in 91ab’s; 1HR 8RBI; 1SB; 5%BB/22%K rates; .214 vs. LHP; .222 vs. RHP; .250 in May; 23 games in the OF with 1 error (.978). Brown is just starting to heat up after an early season mixed with struggle and injury.
Dylan Cozens, 20, Phils 2nd round pick in 2012; .229/.268/.306 in 144AB’s; 2HR 20RBI; 4/7SB; 5%BB/25%K rates; .182 vs. LHP; .250 vs. RHP; .203 in May; 30 games in the OF with 2 errors (.973); 1 OF assist; Cozens is a five tool player when all tools are functioning which is right now about half the time. A very streaky hitter, he has produced a ton one week only to look lost the next.
Chase Harris, 23, Phils 14th round pick in 2014; .313/.360/.338 in 80AB’s; 0HR 8RBI; 5SB; 6%BB/18%K rates; .355 vs. LHP; .286 vs. RHP; .349 in May; 23 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist. Harris has seen some significant playing time with Aaron Brown out injured for a time and has made the most of it.He has some speed and gets on base.
ANdrew Pullin, 21, Phils 5th round pick in 2012; .299/.353/.417 in 127AB’s; 2HR 18RBI; 1/3SB; 8%BB/16%K rates; .381 vs. LHP; .259 vs. RHP; .294 in May. 27 games in the OF without an error; 5 OF assists. Pullin has been a very pleasant surprise in his transition to the OF this year which he has handled well. Playing an all around good game right now, although he was injured last week.
Lakewood
Herlis Rodriguez, 20, SIgned as a free agent in 2010; .249/.261/.402 in 87AB’s; 2HR 15RBI; 4/6SB; 2%BB/11%K rates; .154 vs. LHP; .257 vs. RHP; .333 in May; 16 games in the OF with 1 error (.974); 3 OF assists; Rodriguez has taken it up a notch in May and has been producing runs as of late.
Cord Sandberg, 20, Phils 3rd round pick in 2013; .216/.270/.248 in 125AB’s; 0HR 10RBI; 1/3SB; 5%BB/14%K rates; .147 vs. LHP; .242 vs. RHP; .211 in May; 28 games in the OF with 1 error(.981); 3 assists; Sandberg has struggled through the early going with significant issues against lefties and little more production against RHP.
Carlos Tocci, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .362/.429/.471 in 138AB’s; 1HR 18RBI; 9/10SB; 8%BB/10%K rates; .444 vs. LHP; .333 vs. RHP; .367 in May. 33 games in the OF with 1 error; 1assist. With 1100 AB’s at the Low A level, Tocci is dominating. Its time to move him up, now.
Jiandido Tromp, 21, SIgned as a free agent in 2011; .172/.236/.241 in 116AB’s; 0HR 6RBI; 5SB; 7%BB/28%K rates; .172 vs. LHP; .172 vs. RHP; .202 in May; 28 games without an error in the OF; 6 OF assists. Has been awful with the bat, excellent with the glove.
DL: Samuel Hiciano
Tough to argue against Tocci and Altherr moving up. Presently they offer the best tools of all our OFers on the Pharm. However, the rest of that crop is problematical–no outstanding power with good contact and superior fielding IMO anywhere close to the bigs.
I’d love to see them answer that lack in the earliest part of the draft in June. A guy like Ian Happ of Cinn.??? They also are talking about HS catcher Stephenson from Georgia.
Ideally, in my fantasies, we’d get back at least one worthy prospect OFer in the trade(s) of Hamels and Paps.
Give Altherr a shot at LV so that he can “adjust” to AAA ball and be a viable candidate to fit in the Phils OF in ’16 (at his age of 25) as at least a learning back-up role. Tocci is excitingly showing his skills that were foreseen when he was signed. Having gained 11 lbs over the off-season, he’d do well to continue his weight gain program to reach 18 lbs which IMO would further increase his power. Then, look out!
Both of them look ready for the moves up.

Yeah…consider: he’s only 19 (?) with a few pro seasons behind him. And, he is already an excellent center fielder with speed for the OF and on the bases…adding in a high oba and power to come w some more strength and weight gain. So….what’s not to like?
After all, what other Phils prospect OFer has these skills now coming out for display? Ans: none. Give him 2-3 more minor lg seasons and we could have an All-Star center fielder to add to Crawford, Nola, et al.

Quinn, altherr, tocci…. Still need some power. How about Rhys hoskins, he’s tearing up Lakewood, played college ball, I’d skip Clearwater and go right to reading with him.

Dugan just can’t get healthy. Too much development time is being lost. I’m sorry to say.
