Phillies First Roster Moves, 3/16

Todd Zolecki has reported the Phillies first roster moves.  Left-hander Jesse Biddle, right-hander Ethan Martin, left-hander Adam Morgan, and outfielder Aaron Altherr have been optioned to the minor league camp.  Right-hander Sean O’Sullivan and catcher John Hester have been reassigned to the minor league camp.

All these moves would be characterized as expected, but I am mildly surprised that O’Sullivan as a healthy starter would have been reassigned this early.

  1. Will they adjust the minor league spring training group rosters now to accommodate these players or wait until some interclub games are played?

    1. I think they will adjust the groups. Last season they had 5 groups – one managed by the LHV staff, one managed by the REA staff, one managed by the CLR staff, one managed by the LAK staff, and one managed by the WIL/GCL staffs.

  2. Jim-Do you know when Biddle will make his first minor league spring training appearance? I’m thinking Wednesday, but all the Phillies minor league teams will be on the road that day-in Tampa facing the Yankees minor teams I think.

    1. Jesse is meeting with his former high school team on Wednesday; they are having a spring training week in the area then.

    2. The minor league teams are never all on the road on the same day. Two teams travel and two remain at the Carpenter Complex. However, according to the schedule that I have, if Biddle is scheduled to pitch Wednesday (3/18), it will be in Bradenton against the Pirates. The AAA and AA teams will travel that day. The two A teams will remain at the Complex to face the Pirates’ A teams.

  3. I got to go to Clearwater on Sunday for my first time. Got an up close look at Swihart from the pen and chatted briefly with Garcia and Martin. Watched MAG warming up and he was throwing hard but many pitches were sailing on him. Anyway my first time to a Spring Training game was a fun experience
